i recently quit guild wars and i'm looking for a new game. i downloaded the free trial but when it asked for a credit card number i stopped there. i didn't want to give them any info if i wasn't sure i was gonna play the game for real or not. i'm just looking for suggestions

You do not pay until after 14 days. Further if you are bad at remembering dates you can simply login and then out and cancel. Then you will have 14 days to play without having to worry about being billed.
I will say that 14 days is not enough of a trial. They really should offer 30 days. If you become sure you want to play the game then you need to buy the latest expansion. You are really missing out on the best content of the game without it. One reason why the trial is not exactly enough.
Is the game worth it or not depends on what you like. The graphics are great, but do not look nearly as nice as GuildWars (very little does). The combat is much better than in GW. It is better than WoW.
The best thing you can do, at least for the trial is to play for 14 days on one of the classic servers. There are enough people there to group with and if you get to 20 you can go out to an active BG. There is one for level 1-4, 5-10, etc. But you do not get realm points or experience for those. However I think starting around 15 (definatley 20) the bg will give XP and realm points.
Have you played any other MMO's except for Guild Wars, Because the only 'real' MMO's ive played are GW and DAoC. I first I thought DAoC sucked, it took so long to get sued to the controls and how the game feels and learning everything, but once you perservere you will LOVE it! I do! The thing that took me most to get used to was the quests, because there is no direct path through the game (like GW has) its a very different feel to it. But What I suggest is goto HIB on a classic server and do all the of quests Addrir gives you! Those are so much fun. THen when you reach 10 or so (I dont know the min level) you can go to the Battle Ground and get a taste of RvR (which I found to be very confusing but you get the hang of it.)
I'de say go and buy catacombs (20$) and play for the 2 week trial and the free month. and see how you like it. It takes a while to get used to but its well worth it.
BTW if you dont like level grind heres a tip do the instanced dungeons. I always thought they werent really worth it because the monsters never drop anything, but the XP is unbelieveable. In the last week ive leveled my char more then I have in a month because I never used my cata expansion to my advantage.

Is DAoC like GW where when u leave cities ur group has their own world or is it like most other mmo's where every1 is grouped in a single world?
