How long has GW2 been mmorpg.com's top voted game still in development? Does this at all reflect the potential of GW2's top status among the other AAA games or is this just another bias poll?
GW2 currently ranks first with 8.75, ArcheAge second with 8.17 and The Secret World a distant third with 7.99

Those polls only show there's going to be a lot of broken hearted kids when GW2 releases and it doesn't live up to what they have it built up in their minds to be.

Hardly bias if it's voted by the community.
Games get announced, hype builds, they go up on the hypo-o-meter, they release and another game is most hyped.
Thus the cycle continues.
Warhammer, Age of Conan, Aion... it's whatever the community is building itself up for.
MMO players recently have had more enjoyment following the development of a game and getting excited about it than actually playing the game.
EDIT - Guild wars 2 has been top since they started releasing details of the game so I'd say about August 2009
Gw2 has been top hyped game for 2 years now. But that hype is not as blind as some people might think. Everything Arenanet promised is in the game and players had a chance to experience it by themself. Gw2 didn't build hype by releasing some expensive CGI cinematics like some other <unnamed> mmos did.

I do believe there is a possibility that GW2 may not live up to its hype and expectations; however, I think that possbility not likely. Only those with unrealistic expectations (as with any game) will be dissapointed; those and WOW and TOR fanboys (aka Trolls).
I guess time, sales and number of active players will decide whether or not GW2 is a failure. I'm very curious as to whether GW2 will do better than TOR and Rift, we'll see. Case in point, I believe mmorpg.com is a pretty balanced gaming website; as in, not full of trolls/fanboys running the website. Considering that, I think the fact that GW2 has been the top voted game in the development category speaks volumes. There is definitely great potential with GW2, what remains to be seen is whether or not it lives up to hits hype and (reasonable) expectations.
I think it's been like that for close to two years now. But it only means that most people have liked what they've seen an heard (hence the "hype" part) so far. I'm actually a bit surprised it's remained that high, even after some of the perceived negatives of the game have been disclosed.
Isn't that the truth! Some fans will follow a game's development for 2-3 years then once it's released only play it for 6 weeks.

Very true... SWTOR essentially built its hype around its CGI cinematics, thus misleading the player base. One of the biggest proofs for this is the fact that corporate EA has to finagle their sub numbers and SWTOR is having to merge servers and provide ridiculous incentives (free months) to keep their ever shrinking playerbase. Just a matter of time before a cash shop is introduced in SWTOR (if not already in place) and become a f2p game.
Unless SWTOR aggressively changes/improves its game design, it will only end one of two ways; the way of lotr or tabula rasa.
I cannot wait for GW2. I don't expect it to save the genre, I just expect it to be fantastic, like GW1.
Agreed. GW2 is not the mmo messiah, but it is a very large step in the right direction. See ya'll in the Mists! :-)
This. But you know, haters gonna hate.
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
Or a lot of sheepish smiles from the nay sayers coming to join in on the fun.

Yup, trolls will be trolls. I'm confident that GW2 will out perform SWTOR and Rift, question is... how will it compete against the mother of all mmos; WOW. I do not expect GW2 to "dethrone" WOW, but I think there is the possibility it can put at least a small dent in WOW's playerbase
I suppose you could describe my smile as sheepish considering SWTOR epic failure. The mere fact that EA games was involved in SWTOR should have been sufficient for everyone to have known that SWTOR was going to fail.
When GW2 out performs SWTOR, my smile will be anything by sheepish
Given GW1 sold over 6 mil boxes, and the fact that GW2 will be keeping the same business model while providing SO MUCH MORE for players, it has some serious potential
Of course, boxes sold do not mean active players... but I will say this from personal experience.
SWTOR, we're already seeing a lot of threads where people are talking about low server populations. I logged into GW1 PHROPHECIES, and just about every outpost I visited had people standing around in some pretty high end gear and chat was lively.
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
You know it's in beta, right? Like, there are videos online, right now, that show exactly what the game is going to be; hell, a lot of players have even had first-hand experience with the game at this point. It's probably time to stop claiming that the hype is all due to people "building it up in their minds".
i like peanut butter
GW2 will be awesome cant wait to play it and it looks fantastic . just bought it today im so ready to play
Skyy_High, [mod edit] Its sad that such a great franchise such as the Star Wars franchise (similarly to LOTR) was converted into such a poorly developed and executed mmorpg. Its what happens when EA Games gets involved and when games heavily depend on the franchise as opposed to the game itself
swtor did have fun warzones but thats it the rest of the game you can put back in the box and ship back to them
who cares how it compares?
Really does it matter how it compares to other games? Unless YOU are the one looking to further instigate on the forums.
As long as YOU are having fun, it should NOT matter how it compares to other games unless you are looking to start drama in other game subforums.
archage also looks good to me but will wait to see if it pans out to be good
Agreed.
Back to the topic at hand, I think GW2 has great potential to becoming number two behind wow in the mmo gaming world. Another thing to consider is that GW2 is extremely popular in europe. I doubt that the US will be the largest playerbase for GW2. I guess we'll see.
Very true indeed! I'd also like to add that the level of intensity of those who follow also mirrors the level of disappointment of those unhappy ones.
Not looking to instigate, and though you are right that all that truly matters is that you have fun playing the game, there is something to be said as to how a game compares to its competitors. If GW2 pummels the competition, there's a better chance more people will play (the more the merrier) and probably the better expansions will be follow
i havent played any of the other guild wars games but this one does seem to be put together well and seems to have alot of thought built into all aspects of the game instead of mindless go here get that go there kill that
