First impression: Holy monorail ...
I have clocked 100's and 100's of hours playing D2 and other hack & slashers like Titan Quest (both up to fairly recently even) but this takes the cake in the linear department.
Each of those games have very linear progression and it's inherent to hack & slashers, but the cramped, corridor like maps in D3 as well as the (apparently?) linear skill progression makes it feel even more dumbed down than any of them. The only unpredictable factor I've noticed is loot drops (and possibly boss spawns).
Willing to cut it some slack though because I am just level 6 at the moment and haven't seen much yet. But please someone tell me that:
- Maps will be bigger and random later on
- Character progression offering more choice to end up with a variety of possible builds. Why did they take out skill trees anyway? I loved those V_V
Really hoping for those 2 points because they are a couple of the few aspects that make the genre bareable by adding a bit of choice and unpredictability to the world and character progression.
So far the only innovations I can pinpoint are in the graphics and physics departments.
It does feel like Diablo to me, though and I like much of the artwork.

Finished the beta with a demon hunter, got to lvl 10. I'm not saying it's a bad game but it was just so boring, no skill point or attribute points, couldn't even attack with a polearm as a demon hunter, couldn't find normal attack (if there even is one), honestly it feelt like a cheap f2p mmorpg. In diablo 2 you could atleast make a melee sorc with zeal (if you got the runed item).
Yea, game is pretty bad. Just got done doing Sorc, Barb, and now Witch Doctor.
The linearization is REALLY bad. Diablo 2 was linear, but at least they gave you a free-form skill tree system to try literally MILLIONS of builds between all the classes. Souly focusing on itemization has completely crippled Diablo 3.
The "New" Blizzard, as per usual, only focused on the dollar signs and NOT the actual product.
Why are all modern games turning out like this?! Seriously, I DON'T want to play older games anymore, but they're the only ones that ACTUALLY have freaking depth to them! WTF
