just going to throw those out there. i know you care. it's why i post on these forums. just. for. you.
*ahem*
so basically it boils down to this: it's a fun little hack'n'slash with lots of arterial spurts, pretty spell effects, and squishy sounds. actually, the sounds were really outstanding. for everything. it is impressive how much this little thing helps the game. another nice thing is the monk. he's pretty fun, mostly because he's so fast that the combat actually feels engaging. after that it goes downhill.
you can only choose from a limited selection of skills which are just flat unlocked at a certain level. this wouldn't be so bad if there were more of them. heck even if there weren't more it would be tolerable, if still subpar (i mean, when does firing flaming bats out of your hands get old?). however, because there's so few skills, and because progression is locked, they resorted to making all skills just modify your weapon damage, and then adds an effect. tried and true way to maintain the usefulness of skills throughout the game right? not here. skills are seperate attacks (with one exception to be covered later). you will never use your base attack after level 1. thus it doesn't matter what weapon you have equipped. spitting poison with your witch doctor? that two handed axe has nice base damage stats. equip it. rupturing space time with your mage? battleaxe. anything that you pick up that you can equip and does nice damage is what you want to equip. the exception to this is a few of the demon hunter skills which require bows. that's it. don't worry about ranged weapons not working with your barb or monk. they can't equip them. period. the only time you need to worry about what to equip is for the barb, and that's just a question of "do i want more armor or more pain?" (usually this doesn't matter since i found daggers that did more damage than two handers).
this brings me to another problem with the game: there's no reason to use one weapon type over another. it all boils down to damage. no skills for a certain weapon type (except as previously noted). no skills that help a certain weapon type. not even any particular item bonuses that i saw that favored one class over another with the exception of +X to [classes favored skill]. just pick up what you want that does nice damage and roll with it. until you find something that does better damage.
this leads into the last thing that ruins this game: the difficulty. it is absurdly easy. insultingly so. i came close to dying once. and that was with my barb when i was level 2 and unarmored. popped one health pot and i was fine. in fact, i could count the number of pots i used on one hand. from my runs with all the classes. way too easy. even the end boss was just a pit stop with a lot of health.
so between the absurd layout for skills, the lack of incentives for diverse playstyles via weapon selection, and the insane difficulty (and not in the way that "insane difficulty" is usually used), i would say avoid this game. unless you have $60 kicking around, and you want your brain to turn to mush. seriously. no brain power required.
tl;dr: it's pretty crap.

Youre describing diablo!
there's a lot of combinations of skills, dunno what game ur playing. would take probably 100000 times to try every build in the game.
weapon damage matters but certain weapons will probably have better affixes than others, you haven't seen even a small amount of the weapons in the game, of course at low levels when theres barely any good affixes on weapons you won't have much of a choice but to go with the one with the best damage.
Really? the games easy? yea its 1/3rd of act 1 on normal, no shit its easy, do you expect the tutorial of the game basically to be hard as shit? theres nightmare then hell then inferno after that all which get harder and harder.
TLDR- you just played 1/50th of the game and your judging it already? give me a break.
I seriously wonder what people are thinking when they complain the game is easy on it's easiest setting... It's not called easy but the difficulties only go up.. so ya, it's the "very easy" setting, if compared to some other games.
I bet these are the same people that will be crying for nerfs when they play the harder difficulties.
yes. yes i am. i am judging it on its basic mechanics. which are crap. just because enemies may do more damage, and have more life, and i'll have 10 more skills down the line doesn't make the basic mechanics covered in my review any better. D3 is fundamentally flawed. there is nothing in the game that can redeem it from being, at its core mechanics, bad in my eyes.
if you like it, more power to you. seriously. in case you hadn't noticed i like GW2, and there's plenty of flak going around for liking it. so i'm going to say to you, sincerely, what i wish more people would say to players of any game that they don't like: i hope you enjoy the game. however, i am going to consider it my duty to dissuade anyone who loves hack'n'slash games, and especially the diablo series, to give D3 a pass.
d'you remember D2? you could get creamed in the den of evil so easily. or the cold plains. the first two areas in D2 could chew you up. so yes. i am going to judge it based on the begining of the game. i know what the curve on D3 will be like: more hp, more damage. bing bang boom. the intro of torchlight was harder.
EDIT: i've spoken my piece, i'm not going to convince any of you to my point of view, nor are you going to change my mind. so on that note i'm going to stop paying attention to this thread. however let me leave you with this (since all of you are complaining about how "it will get harder"): when was the last time a game challenged you? obviously it has been far too long, or you wouldn't be so complacent. demand more from your games.
I just got done playing witchdoctor and only to level 8, but I did actually take some time to look at the skill sets. This is just a quick count but here it goes..
There were 6 catagories for attacks.
Your Primary and Secondary (That's two)
There was Terror and Defense (That's two more)
Then there was Vodoo and Decay (That's two more)
In those 6 catagories there were 4 different skills with EACH of those skills there are 5 different RUNES that aguemnet the powers. They do things such as increase radius of effects, duration, damage, recast time etc. My numbers might not be completely correct but that's honestly what I saw..
In addtion there were 3 Passive skills that unlocked at 10/20/30
- So -
If you know how Diablo works and how many of the little tweaks you can make can really add up to a significant change in playstyles for characters and allows some personalization by the player. You have 6 catagories of attacks which will eventually be unlocked to have 6 active abilities at a time at "end-game".
You take the 4 SEPERATE abilities in each of those catagories then take the 5 RUNES to further agument your powers. Combined that with how the weapon system works and you can see how things can get a bit interesting to the people who really like to max performance.
Weapons affect both attack speeds, defenses and even augment some powers and if I remember in Diablo 2 some could add another level to a skill completely. For example instead of being able to cast 5 undead at max. You can now cast 6 because of the weapon you had equiped.
I'm not sure if it works the same in Diablo 3. I mean as someone already stated we played only a very small portion of the journey Diablo is. One more thing Diablo has always been about its story to me, the hack-n-slash rapid action is the playground for those that want to do nothing but spill blood in rapid succession. Where this game really gains it's legs is the difficulty settings. Once you cross into the realm of Nightmare difficulty that's when I think you start to hit the peak of Diablo..
/IDK.. MHO

I really had a blast, and i am definitely going to pick this up now. I was surprised at the complete lack of lag, i expected at lest a little bit but it feels like im playing offline (keep in mind, i am currently in Singapore, and playing from there).
I will say one thing though, the game feels really slow and boring when playing through single player. Especially at the start since mobs are sparce and weak and so are your skills.
Made another toon, went co-op (again no lag) and it made a world of difference. Felt a lot more franetic and champion mobs actually had some teeth event at lowly level 5-6. Seriously doubt anyone will play single player once they see how much better co-op is.
I should add that in my 6+ hours playing, i did dc about 8 times so it's wasn't smooth sailing all the way. But then again this is a stress test, so bitching about dcs is like jumping into a swimming pool and then complaining about getting wet.
so you have psychic powers to know if the game will be hard in later difficulties? i dont get your reasoning. Just because you have more skills it wont matter how much stronger/faster the enemies are?
If its bad then don't play it I guess, but your reasoning is still very flawed and i guess you're just blinded by haterage of the game. nothing i can do to change that.
You shouldn't start a thread like this or any thread for that matter if you're not going to defend your point. You should've figured you get some people with different thoughts on this.
No harm no foul though. Just think a bit before starting a thread to state an opinion that some might take as a trollin'.. You know they love to report cats..
