Guild Wars 2 Housing

Ice-QueenIce-Queen Member UncommonPosts: 2,483

I'm not familiar with Guild Wars 1 or anything from Arenanet. I know there was mention of guild halls and personal housing coming after the release of the game.

Do they typically put something like this in an expansion? Or is it to be expected in an update months down the road this year? With GW2 being free to play after you buy it, it puts me in an unfamiliar territory in mmo's, as I've only ever played monthly subscription mmo's. A game having housing is a big seller for me, just curious how it may work for GW2, and what to expect.

if you did any reading you'd find that housing comes in the form of a personal, instanced district of your home city. you will have a house there which you can decorate.

Nope, that is in fact not what your home instance is about. The home instance reflects your progress through your characters personal story. It's not a house for you to put your furniture in.

Naqaj is correct. However Anet has said they will introduce actual housing (whatever that means) in a patch sometime after release together with Guild Halls.

    It's actually both.

You'll have the district that will have different people and stuff depending on what you do on your personal story and it will have your own house where you can put different stuff you get from the game world.

I really hope to see this soon if it isn't included at release.  I love3 having a house I can decorate with trophies and armor sets. Yes, I know I am girly like that!

Is there going to be any player housing?

Each character receives a home instance in their racial capital that is personalized according to the character's biography choices. The home will continue to change as the character becomes more involved in their personal story. Whether certain objects within this home instance or even within your player's "house" can be freely moved and re-arranged is currently unknown.

    Home instance

    From Guild Wars 2 Wiki

The home instance is a portion of the character's home city which is instanced so it can be personalized for the character. The instance is an area around the size of a city block and includes a house or the racial equivalent, a few streets and a merchant area among other city things.[1] The home instance updates constantly as a character progresses through the story, including the addition of special NPCs and merchants[2] who will be different for different characters depending on who was met and befriended during the character's travels.[1] If a party enters a home instance, they will go to the party leader's instance.[3] About 10% of the capital city is part of the personal instance, the other 90% is persistent and the same for all players on the server.[3] When a player enters the home instance of another race alone they see a basic version of the instance. [4]

Given that the asura home instance it somehow makes sense.

I can't find the video from a developer interview where he talks about the players house, that's where i remember hearing something like this.

    Yet, i might be wrong!

Also, the OP might have meant player housing as in a house you actually build yourself, and if so there was an interview where they stated they expect to add this at the same time as guild halls.

Aye, I am talking about housing that was mentioned to be put in later, not the home instance that's in at release.  I was just wondering how arenanet does it. I mean since it's buy it and play with no subscriptions. Do they do free patch content like subscription based mmos do every 4-6 months, and if so could it be included in one of those, or will it be in a paid expansion. Was trying to get an idea of how arenanet do things with thier mmos, and how to expect content to be released as with housing that was mentioned as being released after release date with guild halls.

Jeff Grubb said that they were looking into housing a while back, if they decides to add it probably will be in an expansion.

But I think customizable guildhalls is of a higher priority so don´t expect it this year.

So far have ANET added some features for free and other in expansions, they have not added somthing like this in a cashshop.

But when they add it they will most likely put in loads of furniture, paintings and so on for the house in the cashshop. I think they also will add a crafting proffesion to make stuff like that.

it is guesses of course but I played GW for over 5 years and seen how they done things there. Furniture is typically a thing you could add plenty of in the cashshop without messing with the games balance.

Thanks much, that gives me a bit on how they do things, appreciate it much. I look forward to it too, and can wait patiently for housing. image

I'm a little confused here. Sometimes it sounds like LOTR style housing, and sometimes more like EQ2.

Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?

That kind of housing for both individual players and guilds would be pretty awesome!

Up until recently, the majority of GW1 updates were purely balance tweaks. With the exception of holding pvp tournaments, seasonal events and temporary things of that nature, GW1 didn't get new "content" outside of the form of expansions, which were the campaigns. However, creating new campaigns is a bit different in philosophy than creating content for an MMO world, so we don't really know that it suggests the style of update incoming for GW2.

Once Utopia was canceled in favor of GW2, they created what they deemed their first "true expansion" in the form of GWEN, and that was the last major addition to the game. Since then they've switched to the more typical updates, occassionally adding small batches of new content in the form of Guild Wars: Beyond, basically short stories meant to bridge the gap in history between GW1 and 2.

It would be hard to tell from just the above how they plan to add something like housing, but considering how in-depth a system like that would be (anytime a player is given the chance for customization, all of the many possibilities have to be taken into consideration and accounted for), I'd say you're looking at it being the headliner for an expansion. They could keep customization out of it and just put the most basic, standard things in housing, like storage, but I don't see Anet bullshitting their way through something people are looking forward to, not if their "iterative philosophy" up until this point has anything to do with it (read: perfectionists). They've actually said they're already working on the first expansion, though how deep into it they've gone I don't know.

I think we will certainly see player housing - however, I don't think we will see it BEFORE guild housing.  I also think guild housing should be quite a deep feature.  I remember in GW1 you could choose from several locations.  I'd like to be able to do that again.

As for personal housing, totally something my friends and I want eventually :) I hope they'll do something cool with it and make it more than just a place to lay trophies.

ArenaNet doesn't seem to be doing anything half-assed so who knows what we'll get in time.

In GW1 you could train with your guildies in your guild hall by starting a guild vs guild training session from 1vs1 to 8vs8.

You were also able to have basic mercenaries(NPC) involved and the possibility to enter the faction wars as also real guild vs guild battles.

You also had various NPCs from skillmasters, rune traders, merchants, blacksmiths and so on it.

In GW2 crafting will be taking place through workshops and as far as I could see such workshops will be placed in the guild halls so if you wanna craft something quick you won't have to run or teleport to a particular town/city, you just teleport in your guild hall and do it.

NPCs like Merchants and such will still be recruitable/available for the guild halls.

It was also told that the guild hall will be decorateable with like trophies of the accomplishements of the guild among other things.

If you will still be able to have sparring sessions or real guild vs guild through it I don't know yet (I really hope they will add it back at some point though).

The Hall of Monuments from GW1 which is the personal shrine of one accomplishements will also be in GW2.

Extra housing additional to guild halls and hall of monuments were as you can see through previous postings already announced and partially detailed on a thing or two.

What I hope would be to be able to not only expand our houses through our accomplishements, but also be able to have our own gardens, shops, workshops and stuff so it won't turn out to be the same like the hall of monuments with a little more decoration only.
