I forgot Ultima 7. I played a few of the Ultimas, but Ultima 7 was one of my all time favorites. Just amazing in every way possible.

That and I played MUDs like that other poster. Still occasionally do.

    Here are some I played:

Pool of Radiance: I played this a lot, loved it.
Quest for Glory: Especially trial by fire. At the time I was impressed by how after you completed a quest, or saved the city, the NPC would be like, "Hey, good job defeating that fire guy" or what ever. It is pretty common now, but at the time I thought it was cool.
Civilization: I played this over and over. One of the few strategy games I really enjoy.
I did play a few pen and paper RPG's, Dungeons and Dragons, some Mech Warrior. My main problem was always finding other people who wanted to play as well.
Pong: Yes I really did play this game.
Astroids: Best quarter you could ever spend.

    What about you?

LOTS of final fantasy and other assorted "JRPGS"
Really liked Neverwinter nights...many hours playing that..
    Morrowind.
Half-Life and expansions (blue shift ect)
    Battlefield 1942+ expansions(vietnam)

Loads of FPS games, HL TFC CS Quake etc going all the way back to wolfstein. C&C and Dune were ok RTS games, and the RPG's like Baldurs Gate, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and my all time fave Full Throttle.

Don't forget the original Fallout games. They were epic.

Edit: Almost forgot Ultima Underworld:, The Stygian Abyss. Man that game was huge. I spent months playing it. And Daggerfall.

Oh and Syndicate.. I should stop now. My inner geek is about to explode.

No one has mentioned Chrono Trigger or Wizardry 7 yet?  These are two of my all time favorite games and I pull them out of the closet everyone once an awhile to replay them.

Other notables have been mention:  Ultima, Final Fantasy, Might and Magic, Civilization.

Those were the days, when games were made by people who just wanted to make games and weren't doing it based on corporate directives.  The only games I have played recently that even comes close to having the heart these games had is Witcher I & II.

I was an avid Final fantasy player at first, then I started and completed the .Hack series. For those that dont know .Hack is a PS2 game series that simulates an MMO game, it was this game that gave me the idea to try a real MMO, I havent stopped since.

Diablo 2 was the last major game before I got into MMOs (never played online until years later). My first voyage into onlin gaming was Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast and I've been hooked ever since.

I played pong and a mario game on a small colorless TV since I didn't have a good computer or knew how to use one.

My 1st MMO was a little game called Ragnarok Online.

I played joust quite a bit at the arcade. Flying on my bird trying to kill things.

In WoW (Cataclysm) There is a quest line where you end up flying around attacking things in a big cavern, it reminded me of Joust.

Let's see here...I started on the Atari 2600...can't remember the year or how old I was....RIver Raid was my favorite atari game, and Beserk and Warlords....of course Pitfall and Combat.  On the old Apple computer I liked Karateka.

I played lots of D&D PnP...I really liked collecting colorful dice.  I had a set of translucent emerald green ones I really liked.

Then I got my hands on the NES and it was Super Mario Bros, Punch Out, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Top Gun (remember how hard it was to land on the aircraft carrier? and refueling?)...and a slew of other RPGs.

The original Pantasy Star on Sega was one of my all time favorites.  Quest for Glory games.

Gauntlet, Double Dragon, and My Hero.

More Final Fantasies, Baldur's Gate, Diablo.

I played tons of Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken, and all their sequels. Half Life and CS.

Then I played EQ and that was it for me.  MMO addict ever since, even though nowadays I don't play much cause I might be burned out on the genre...too much same old same old crap.  Played EQ for years, WoW for years, tried many others.

I am on another one of my Extended breaks from WoW and I am a little burned out on MMO's as well. While I am waiting for the secret world I have been playing some single player games. One of the more interesting games I found was the "Legend of Grimrock." It is made to be like one of the old school dungeon crawlers. Having a bit of fun with that.

RTS - Warcraft/Starcraft/Civilization/Age of Empires, Heroes!!, tons of RPGs - Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, fighting games - Mortal KOmbat (I still play the latest ones), platformers and every single racer out there but Need for Speed was my favourite.

Then I played MMOs without playing other games. I was that addicted. Then I stopped playing MMOs and I pretty much play the same genres as before - RTSs, RPGs, fighting games and racing games. However, now I play shooters from time to time like TF2, L4D etc.

Damn that's far away. I know i started playing arcade kind of games on a friend amiga. Then played a lot of solo rpg like the Ultima serie and similar rpg, i kind of stopped pen&paper at that time too, and i still miss my pen&paper groups even today. When the first mmo was out i was more interesting in the first fps like Quake to tell the true. I just refused to pay monthly fee, and a friend had to show me the game live before i began playing it, never really get off that idea that is a rip off since not a single of the mmo i payed sub made any development with all that money i gave them. I also played a bit of Muds, but i i liked only very few of them and they were just so much awkward to me, i never was much of a coder either, and i think you really had to enjoy coding to play them well, they were still very interesting to try them thats for sure, i remember i would just go from one to an other just to see how imaginative they were and what kind of twist each one had.

So many games I won't name them all. Some that stood out as all time favourites. MechWarrior the one released in 89. LOVED that game so much :) MADTV loved this too. Having to put Citizen Kane on all day long because I was too poor to afford other shows. Leisure Suit Larry games, funny :) Pirates!  Railroad Tycoon, the first Civ game, seriously too many games to list.

Civilization, Red Alert, Diablo -- 3 of the most played games in my PC! But now, I'm playing Uprising Empires -- great stuff to play and good people to mingle with.

Civilization is more like changing history and taking chances in winning the goal!

Red Alert, is another awesome game to play but more on military stuff that keeps my blood pumping! image

And not to mention Diablo.. creepy creatures! LOL image

Before MMOs, I was heavily into consoles.  Mostly playing RPGs.  Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1-2, Bioshock, Dead Space, Read Dead Redemption, GTA4, Blue Dragon, and Star Ocean 4.

Also was playing old SNES RPGs (some of the best) on my cell phone - Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4(jap), 5(jap), 6(3 in US).

Same here! Civ was the first game I found myself staying up all night to play.

    Also:
    Master of Magic
    1830
    Rail Empires: Iron Dragon
    Badlur's Gate
    Doom
    HexenHeretic
    Heroes of Might and Magic

I still play some of these games occasionally.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    FPS:

Starsiege (my first real PC game, that wasn't made for really little kids)

Tribes (not nearly as much as Starsiege, but was good to hop on)

    Racing:

    Need for Speed Hot Pursit

    Viper Racing

    Strategy:

Age of Empires 2 (so many fun memories of this game)

    RPG:

Morrowind (but I was too young to actually understand it, so I never really got into it)

And my first MMO was Asheron's Call. I played that for a long time.

Warcraft 2 and Diablo 1, like effing crazy. My first MMO was UO, so it wasn't shortly until I played those games that I started trying to find ways to branch out, and once I discovered virtual worlds and massively online gaming it all ended for me right there. I think it's fair to mention the original Baldur's Gate and games from my Sega Genesis, like the Sonic series, and Shadowrun (which is one of the coolest top down oldschool RPG experiences EVER - the Sega version mind you, not that crap SNES version).
