How does questing work in GW2?

TokkenTokken Member EpicPosts: 3,650

How does questing work in Guild Wars 2?  I never played GW1.  Is it different than most games?

To be specific, How do I know if a npc has a quest for me if there are no marks above them like !  ?  Are there indicators otherwise or do I just need to go around and chat with all npc's to find out which ones have quests for me.

If this has been discussed before I apologize..... please direct me to the appropriate thread if need be......... Thank you.

In a sense the quests find you as you're encouraged to explore and then stumble upon dynamic events.  Basically scenarios in which you assist with others to achieve a common goal.  I think there are also traditional quests ala personal story and such but the developers are really striving to get away from the traditional level specific quest hub areas you go to in a linear progression.

Not sure if that really makes sense but I would recommend watching the Yogscast or Totalhalibut GW2 press beta videos to get a sense for questing in this game.

Personal Story:  Highly involved, branching, fully voiced cutscenes, and instanced missions.  This is what would be the main quest line in another MMO.

Dynamic Events: With roughly 1500 different events in the game, with plans to add more during free content updates, DEs are the main PvE world experience.  Can be done solo or with a group of people, or with people who haven't grouped, with relatively equal difficulty.  Events scale based on the number of people actively participating on a moment to moment basis.  Events can also chain into other events, and can be failed, which leads to a different outcome and effect on the world.  DEs can happen with no players around, and can have minor or major effects on the game world for everyone.  Rewards are based on participation, and you do not have to talk to an NPC to start or finish these.

Renown hearts:  You help out important NPCs to fill up a heart on the map.  When an NPCs heart is filled, you can get special services from them.  This is the questing system that lets completionists feel like they are completing something.  These tasks aren't quests in and of themselves, rather they are things like completing events nearby, or killing enemies nearby, or feeding the NPCs cows, or putting out fires, or gathering apples so that the NPC can make you some delicious pies (yeah...you can actually do this), or generally interacting with the game world.

Skill Point Challenges:  Puzzles (platforming is in this game btw) or bosses or both, you earn skill points to purchase healing, utility, or elite skills.

That is it.  There aren't quest hubs in GW2.  It is a very, VERY, different system from even the PQs of WAR or the rifts of Rift.

...And yes...it has been discussed before...a lot...beating a dead horse doesn't even come close.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

I implore you to do at least a modicum of research, all you need is a simple google search to answer the basics.  By not doing one tiny bit of research shows you are either lazy, incompetent or a troll looking to start another bait/flame thread.

If after doing a modest amount of research you still have questions then by all means come back and ask away.

Normally I would just awnser a question. But this time? Dude seriously? How questing will work is one of the key features of the game. The amount of lazyness to come to any forums and ask about that is astounding.

No need to be an ass. Not everyone knows where to look for information and that is why forums like these come handy. Why so grumpy?

There is an absolute crap ton of info out there about this game and it can be overwheliming to folks that just discovered GW2.  Instead of just saying "read for 2 minutes" wouldn't it have been more helpful to simply offer a link to the info.  I know it's a shock, but there are plenty of users that don't spend their waking hours scouring the interwebs for Guild Wars 2 information.  There are plenty of folks that use these boards as a news source.  I would hope that the Guild Wars 2 community would be a welcome place for folks that are interested in the game.

    To the OP:

When you enter a zone, you will find an NPC called a "tour guide".  When you interact with the tour guide, you will be shown a top-down view of the zone which displays places you can go to help.  For example, when you look at your map you  may see a heart symbol over an area.  That means there is someone that needs help there.  Once you get in that area, you see an indicator on the upper left of your screen that there is an opportunity to help.

Those areas are generally near where 'dynamic events' happen which are also indicated by a sound cue, text in the upper right corner and an orange circle on your mini map.

Rewards for participating in these are distributed in several ways such as in-game mail, chest drops, etc.

I hope that answers your question.

    www.guildwars2.com ?

Maybe because it is easier to ask a question and get all info in one place than browsing a web site or googling? what is the purpose of these forums anyways if you can't even help a person looking for info on the game.

Based on trends in this website I'd say flinging feces internet style. Yeah, it's quite sad...

http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dynamic-events/ - Official Information on GW2's quest system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8-9VEvAmFg - Total Biscuit on the average DE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFKFqzRhXKs - Shadow Behemoth (lvl 10 world boss)

As for specifics. You can go to a scout that highlights areas on your map that need help. You just go to these areas and get a pop-up notification telling you what you need to do in the upper-right corner.

If you want more traditional quests, these are in game as your personal story. There are heart quests as well (you see hearts on the map, and you help these NPCs to get rewards), but most of the time it's hard to tell if you're doing a heart quest, or a dynamic event, or both. They do a really good job of mixing the two together, so you'll find yourself doing both without even realizing it.
