Animations. Mother of God, they are absolutely woeful. I wanted to try a Dwarf but it almost looks like said critter runs about with an invisible pole up his arse. In fact, the vast majority of male animations are cumbersome and awkward. I'm not a graphics man, I'd happily play a game running on a Gameboy but Animations, I need animations to be good - otherwise? Well, otherwise it's torment. Playing a game, staring at the screen as your toon stutters and stumbles across the land is head wrecking.

I so wanted to like this game [it's class system is fantastic] but for the life of me, I can't get passed the animations. And, having said that, the 'Animator's need to be taken outside of Trion HQ, lined up aginst the nearest wall and shot. Failing that, set a few sex-starved Bullocks on them...

Sounds like a pretty superficial reason to not want to play a game if you ask me.

I agree animations are really important to my experience. However, I disagree with your opinion on Rift animation. I find them to be some of the most interesting and diverse of many current mmos. I play the game with all settings maxed at 1920 x 1080 and get 50 to 90 fps. Not sure if that makes a difference but the graphic are awesome and animations are creative and smooth. I love the subtle movements that the characters have. I do pay attention and enjoy the smallest details in mmo graphics and animations and I do not find Rift lacking in that area. LOTRO, a game I love, I do find the animations a bit lacking. I am currently play SWTOR,  while I find a number of problems with that game, I really like the animations. Animation is a bit like art direction and graphics. If they are performing well at top settings their appeal is based more on taste.

I had the same feeling at first but now that i have better armor on that fits the body in a nice fashion, they all come together nicely.

It was at the start when i was in that lame looking starter gear that the way my male toon ran that looked awkward but now the animations are awesome , especially the spell effects.

    Kinda weird i know ..

    Hah...I'm on the same boat

I'm trying very hard to like the game, playing all the race+calling combos, trying to find a combination that makes me feel attached to the character. So far, the only animations I like are the rogue ones for Mathosians/Eth both male and female. All the others are awful...specially the casters...I just cant play a character that performs stupid animations and Rift is full of them.

Imo, Rift lacks "awesome factor" big time. There are no cloaks, the armors are all bland looking and boring, the player models doesnt look great (most males look like prehistoric cavemen), stupid animations, etc.

My experience has been exactly the opposite.  I can't imagine an MMO having more dull and uninteresting animations than Rift.  The class combinations and soul system is interesting, but the animations, combat, character models, and armor sets are dull.

Meh, to each his own. Kind of meaningless reason to stop playing, because they arent really that bad... There are far worse on other games and seems like nitpick reason to quit. :( I'd complain for something real like performance (im on amd rig)... Raids mainly and in cities i have 17-25fps best and around other places easily 40-80fps.

Now this reason is easily fixed if the intel and nvidia rigs play as well as everyone says. But i've read problems even on them.

I actually thought they were fine. When I had a dwarf with one of those books, he ran around with the book closed, and when casting spells, he fetched it, opened it, and pages were flipping around and stuff while he was casting that spell. That's more than in WoW for example, where a character with a book simply holds it closed in his hand. Always.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

This is the type of thing I was talking about. Rift has some really subtle animation that are fairly complex. Weight shifts and complex multiple movements on the characters. I believe some people simple miss this probably because of their rig or just not having an eye for the small details. I have a pretty good rig and play on a 38 inch aquos monitor and I simply can not understand people not appreciating the animations in Rift. Rift is a great game but has it problems and it is not for everyone however artistically Rift is one of the best mmos out at the moment and that includes animations.

Rift obviously has room to improve, but you have to accept that its a smaller budget project.  Either that is for you or it isn't.  WoW is still out there and now SWTOR is out there too for those of you who absolutely must have a 200 + million dollar MMO.

But Rift does a lot for me in other areas which more than makes up for the deficiencies.  I find it a lot more playable than the current competition.  Whereas I found big budget SWTOR to be completely unplayable.

The good thing about Rift is that it caters to gamers and does not try to be a package which appeals to everyone.   I, being a gamer, am fine with that.   People who need Pokeman and Pandas in their MMO though should look someplace else.

Edited to add:  The wardrobe costumes in Rift which replace the armor don't look too bad.   I tend to wear a combination of wardrobe items over my own armor.

I can see your point, but it hasn't stopped me from playing. Most of the attackanimations are great imho. But some of the races, he blue skinny elves, for instance, I cant take their running seriously. I always want to slow down cause they look like they are about to fall over when running.

Smaller budget? Smaller budget?! What the hell are you talking about?!

Rift had a budget of over $50 million.

i dont think the animations are anywhere near bad enough for the game to be considered unplayable.  for me the animations in vanguard were that bad but the ones in rift are much better than that

For a comparison, Aion's budget was 18 mill.  EQ2 was between 20-25 mill
