I find it hilarious that nobody is able to give any serious counterargument to the OP.
I was kind of hoping *someone* would be able to explain why GW2 is the second coming of Chri ... err the super MMO, but apparently nobody really is.
Personally I was bored to death with GW1 after 3 days or so playing. I dont see how GW2 will be any different in this respect.
mostly due to the excess of information out there on why we should be excited.
a simple google search for "why should i play GW2" goes to 2 videos explaining this very thing. laziness or trolling is the only reason to ask such a well known and absurd question.
whether you agree with the arguments or not on why the game will be great, they are well known and easily obtainable.
Basically this ^.
Furthermore this 'why is GW2 the second coming of Christ' argument is fairly strawman. People just aren't saying that anymore. Not since last year.
And yes, GW2 will have some of the same issues GW1 had. For starters, both games require you to give them a chance, and neither game is meant for everyone. However, there are a LOT of people that enjoyed the first game, and it's looking like there will be a LOT of people who will enjoy the 2nd. Whether you are part of it is only relevant for you.
Furthermore, I'm not sure exactly what you guys are reading, but as Ramanad pointed out, there's a ton of actual info available on the game. If you are going off of hype, it's entirely your choice. If you want to look at actual info on the game, just google it. Most of the info just isn't that hard to find. If dozens of videos showing, explaining, and critiquing GW2's mechanics aren't enough for you, then I guess you'll have to be part of the group of people that either won't be playing, or will be waiting a waiting a while to do so. No one is forcing you to play this.
It's just an innovation on the warhammer public quests and rifts. This is one of those things that you can clearly see the over-hype on. Your not going to encounter truly dynamic ever changing completely random events. You will encounter scripted events that are chained together with outcomes based on player involvement.

Dont believe what people will say this weekend.. all the fanboys will be defending the game as much as possible even if its turns out like all the other super hyped games.. try it yourself and see at least after this weekend we can start talking about it haha.. unlike the guy above who just broke NDA by saying he played a beta weekend..
Unlikely. MMORPG.com forums are 5 troll to every 1 fan boy, especially considering most trolls are a fan boy of one rival game or another. It's far more likely you're going to be reading innaccurate negative reviews than inaccurate positive ones.
There are plenty of trolls, this is true...However there has always been a phenomenon around here before a game (especially during beta) where people post raving reviews about a new game. During the beta of SWTOR and even after it first released, there were still tons of reviewers posting great impressions how it brought something new and amazing to the genre. There are far more trolls after a game has released than there are before hand, and there are by far more fans/fanbois in hope of a new game in the wake of the hype. This was true for SWTOR, and it is true again for Guild Wars 2. Simply take a look at the forums lately, every second thread is about Guild Wars 2, and for the most part it's been positive except for a few nitpickers.
I pre-purchased the game, and I am with the OP...I'm certainly not convinced about the hype. I think anyone who is could be setting themselves up for disappointment. I will be pleasantly surprised if the game lives up to a fraction of the hype however.
I'm sorry, but no, it's not like SWTOR. You can find threads critiquing GW2, as well as press videos doing the same. You can also find cases during beta of Anet listening to the fans & changing things up. SWTOR? There was a flood of positive info, and a very obvious effort to quiet any negatives. GW2? You can find both, but yes it's mostly positive. The only people that are getting warned / banned / locked, are people who are posting nonsense. Like Caldrin there.. Speaking of which:
@ Caldrin.. ARE YOU FRIKKING KIDDING ME?
Seriously, take the tin foil off, and think about what you said for a moment. First.. Anet can't be trusted, because there's not enough dirt to throw at them. Now the fans can't be trusted, because there's some giant conspiracy to praise this game for no reason. Seriously, go here:
If you need something new to pick apart, those are some people who will be livestreaming the event. You can complain to them about how bias they are, or how much the game sucks if you really must do so. Or, you could try and be constructive, and use the opportunity to get some info about the game. Choice is yours.

We'll have to agree to disagree then, because I distinctly remember people posting concerns about SWTOR as well. You're welcome to go look at these very forums, there were plenty of threads with people critiquing what information they could get their hands on. Though you're kind of proving my point for me...Your assumption sounds like it's mostly positive because of a sure-fire great game, this is precisely what I'm getting at. The same assumptions we're made about SWTOR in the masses. My main point is simply that both games we're highly discussed, and highly hyped, this goes without saying. I'm not saying Guild Wars 2 is going to be a flop a la SWTOR, what I'm saying is that I don't drink the hype. It looks promising, but let's not give it the crown just yet.
I swear I see more posts about hype for this game than actual hype for this game.
How anyone could be so malleable that abundant information about a game could be viewed as a threat is beyond me. Use some common sense and come to your own conclusions. Do you really want the fact that a lot of people are or aren't discussing something to be a deciding factor on how you feel about the subject yourself? That doesn't seem like a direct route to finding enjoyment to me.
I realise these forums are primarily for perpetuating some eternal competition between the various factions more often than as a discussion platform, and finding links to solid info amongst the rubbish is a chore, but there is solid info out there.
Investigate honestly and see for yourself. They've been incredibly transparent regarding what GW2 is and is not, no one should have any real doubts about whether or not this game is their cup of tea at this point. What's the mystery? What's the secret threat? There are hours upon hours of gameplay videos detailing almost every aspect of the gameplay made by people that are not involved with the creation of the game, and many of those also have commentary that helps put what you're seeing into context.
Don't be manipulated by the emotions of others, especially when there's solid evidene to go inspect closely for yourself.
From your post, in which you claim everything is 'warning you off', it sounds as if you've already made up your mind. It sounds like you're just not very attracted to this game for a number of reasons, and that's fine. If you've watched the game in action and aren't really interested, why force it? No need for drama, I'm sure something else that's more your style will come along at some point.
Everything about the build up to this game reminds me of every other MMO that has come out since WoW and failed. It's always the media going "how amazing is this" because they go to some controlled event and are told by the developer why this and that feature are so innovative. Then you get to play the game and realise the smoke and mirrors behind that feature and realise it isn't so great. I bet this "dynamic" content isn't so dynamic when the game is released, people get to play for longer and get bored and see patterns in it. PC Gamer even said it seems rather scripted in their playthrough of GW2 and didn't seem that enthusiastic about it.
Everything is warning me off like the horrible choice of races, I think they all look like they came from an Asian MMO such as AION, Tera, Arche Age or Lineage etc. They have that horrible rabbit looking race which annoys me, it's like what Final Fantasy does with some small midget race to try and be "cute" because I guess the culture over there loves that stuff. Then you have how you teleport all over the world, which really breaks the immersion for me and just feels more like a game than a world. You had them stupid looking teleport doorways which I don't understand why they're a colour in wall.... looks more placeholder to me. They could just have a doorway where you can see into the next zone so it feels a bit more immersive.
The worst thing of all is I thing all the classes really bland, I've watched countless videos of them all and everyone praising them for being so amazing and unique and yet they all sort of look the same. I mean without the "trinity" they all do the same thing and they don't really look all that unique either. When you play TF2 you even have a trinity and every character is really unique and sticks out. You have your favourite class but you love to play them all because they all have their own personality and are really different. You have the DPS classes, the tank classes and the healer but the difference is you don't need the trinity to win because it is twitch based so it requires skill to win.
Every MMO where I've found the classes to look really bland, I find that I don't like it. I just end up levelling 4 or 5 characters to level 20 before realising I hate them all, they all feel watered down or the same and just get bored and quit. The best MMO for classes was WoW, every class felt so unique, so fun to play and they all looked different, you could tell what class someone was playing just by looking at them in a split second. I found myself playing every class because I loved them all and not because I was struggling to find one I liked.
There are no mounts which are something everyone likes to get, they're the ultimate loot and running around everywhere is so much more fun with a mount. There is no open PVP either, it's all battleground based like SWTOR was where you have them calling Ilum as World PVP when it isn't because it isn't...
I just find the whole game bland really, the story just doesn't excite me, the world just looks rather generic and the art style just looks like another generic fantasy Asian MMO. Yet I pre ordered the game because I've been waiting since 2005 for an MMO I liked, I even bought Dark and Light back in the day even though it looked like crap, people were hyping that game up massively too lol.
Guess I'll see on Friday, though I bet I'll hate it and it'll be more money down the drain.... only good news is the login screen is nice lol. I hope I eat my words and it's the best MMO since WoW. It's just all the fans as well saying how amazing it is that makes me think even more that it isn't. Every MMO it's the same story where either they're excited to be the only ones in beta so they feel part of a club and have to defend it or they believe the media hype who only get to see it in controlled bursts. They always drive players away as well when they claim that everything they say is wrong.
Like I said I hope on Friday I'm eating my words.
And therefore you pre-purchased anyway, despite everything you said.

They are dynamic, they change according to outcomes
And you seriously thought they would be random?
Sorry I didnt know programmers have the technology to do that - I dont think they'll ever have such technology
No offense, but anyone who thought the events are always new, random and non-scripted must be nuts
And trust me: most of the fans here know exactly how the events work, it's just people like OP - random guys that jumped on the hypewagon knowing nothing about the game that are yelling the game is over-hyped, yet they still buy it only to see the game did not meet they I-heard-somewhere expectations...(aka non-scripted events)
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
I swear I see more posts about hype for this game than actual hype for this game.

maybe that's why they aren't haveing a free open beta? Just a thought. However, I think this game does have a huge potential and even though I did not pre-order, I want it to be the next great game, I am desperate, as many seem to be, for real excitement.
I was never convinced about Guild Wars 2. A lot of people claiming that it innovative but it really doesn't. It's true it will be a lot less similar to WoW than Rift and SWOTR but it won't be a lot different either.
I swear I see more posts about hype for this game than actual hype for this game.

Good post. I heard someone say (possible from Guildcast) where they fully expect, for example, people who LOVE open worldwide PvP - who know full well that GW2 doesn't have this (the mists isn't what they're looking for) and they will still buy the game, play for a month - then ragequit and spend the entire time complaining that the game has no Worldwide PvP.
It's no mystery as to what GW2 is and what it isn't. If it's not for you, that's totally ok.
Actually no, that's not what I'm saying at all. And I didn't see any assumptions in my post, so I don't know where you're getting that from.
Yes, people were posting concerns about SWTOR. I said that in my post. I also said that Bioware was clearly trying to cover that up. Suggestion threads & the like were not only get locked, they were getting deleted. Erased. People who asked about them were also getting banned for it. It was obvious.
If you are seeing similar practices with Anet, by all means show me. Because I honestly haven't seen that at all. There have been critiques on the game, and they have been waranted. And in many cases, the game has been changed to accomodate some of these critiques. This is what I'm talking about, and it's a very clear difference. With SWTOR you had a very controlled 'denial' type atmosphere, where a company is more concerned about it's image than on making a good game. With GW2, you have a company that chose a design path, and as long as requests don't contradict their design philosophy, they are open to it.
I in no way said GW2 is a sure-fire game. I said it's a good game, because I've played it, and I know it's good. I also said it won't be for everyone, which I also fully agree with. These aren't assumptions, these are based on personal experience. Whether you believe me or not is an entirely different story, and not one I particularly care about. However, what I can say is that 'hype' is hot air. It's buzz created from nothing. SWTOR had this for sure. GW2 may have a little, but most of what's being talked about are things that we know are in-game. They aren't promises, they aren't buzz words, they are working mechanics that have no only been in the game for some time now, but we've actually seen them working. That's the difference.
I swear I see more posts about hype for this game than actual hype for this game.

That is common. People have expectations and wants to believe the game will be exactly whatever they think would be the ideal game. Then after release when it turns out its not really the perfect game for them they will complain and quit. And go to forums and tell everyone how bad it is.
I dont think we know enough about the game yet. And I cant decide if its good or bad. I think its better to think like that compared to thinking it will be my dream game and probably ragequit after release. There is still NDA and no release date. A lot of questions need answers.
Seriously, take the tin foil off, and think about what you said for a moment. First.. Anet can't be trusted, because there's not enough dirt to throw at them. Now the fans can't be trusted, because there's some giant conspiracy to praise this game for no reason. Seriously, go here:

err so during the TOR beta you didnt have fanboys screaming how awesome the game was over and over?
I have been lucky with the last few big release MMOs to actually tried them out myself so didnt have to listen to all the fanboys screaming how good it was LOL...
Dont get me wrong im sure there will be quite a few really nice reviews from people testing this weekend... but the majority of the posts on here will be along the lines of..
"GW2 is the best game in the world and have killed wow"
"GW2 is has the best graphics ever so much better than anythign else out there"
GW" blah blah blah blah"
I wish i was wrong you know but over and over super hyped up games like this have just turned out to be average ok games.. not saying they sucked bad or anything but where nothing special.. I have not played one MMORPG that was super hyped that lived up to the hype and its simple as that.
I pre-purchased, and it had nothing to do with the hype....Buy the game if it looks like you will like it or get your money out of it.
I have a lot of concerns about many of the pve systems, but I have seen enough in videos and other things to feel I will easily get my money out of it....So if all my pve/system concerns end up being bad, I will be ok, and if most are good, I will be happy.

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
probably not buying the game because if it sucks it will never get fixed because all the fanboys give anet the impression that gw2 rocks.
gonna wait until post release

maybe that's why they aren't haveing a free open beta? Just a thought. However, I think this game does have a huge potential and even though I did not pre-order, I want it to be the next great game, I am desperate, as many seem to be, for real excitement.
A lot of people claiming that it innovative but it really doesn't. It's true it will be a lot less similar to WoW than Rift and SWOTR but it won't be a lot different either.
I think some people are going to be disappointed.
OP, did you not see that mind-blowingly amazing title screen? How dare you!
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Can someone tell me in 20 words or less what he said?
...
Good lord.
Seems like you are setting yourself up to do just that tbh.
If you are not 'convinced' why on Earth did you pre purchase? Just for the moan value?

same reason people got CoD MW3 but complained about it

err so during the TOR beta you didnt have fanboys screaming how awesome the game was over and over?
I agree you will see some of these
but you will also see people from tomorrows beta say its not what it was hyped to be
both being stated regardless if they are true because its players personal opinions

WAR was the last mmo I listened to the hype on.
