well it will be difficult for those who loved vanilla wow to convert to the new standard that will come after GW2 is released and they blast the record of sales out of the water for the past two years of any game title or expansion. I can understand that change being unfamiliar is something that people have an issue with and often fear, but fear is irrational. I'm sure your fears will be put to rest on friday.
It's just an innovation on the warhammer public quests and rifts. This is one of those things that you can clearly see the over-hype on. Your not going to encounter truly dynamic ever changing completely random events. You will encounter scripted events that are chained together with outcomes based on player involvement.

Guess I'll see on Friday, though I bet I'll hate it.
Seems like you are setting yourself up to do just that tbh.
If you are not 'convinced' why on Earth did you pre purchase? Just for the moan value?

Hearing positive things from him, after he goes in with that mentality, would be a big plus for the game. Unless this was his plan all along, to trick us into thinking he hates it and then comming with a positive impression (joking...or am I?).

They are dynamic, they change according to outcomes
And you seriously thought they would be random?
Sorry I didnt know programmers have the technology to do that - I dont think they'll ever have such technology
No offense, but anyone who thought the events are always new, random and non-scripted must be nuts
And trust me: most of the fans here know exactly how the events work, it's just people like OP - random guys that jumped on the hypewagon knowing nothing about the game that are yelling the game is over-hyped, yet they still buy it only to see the game did not meet they I-heard-somewhere expectations...(aka non-scripted events)
The havok engine and euphoria both do dynamic physics/motion synthesis. You can see it in games like force unleashed, grand theft auto 4, red dead redemption, etc.
Now don't get me wrong I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here with a dynamic physics enigine vs a scripted event.
Calling an event dynamic when it has two outcomes is really strecthing it. Pirates invade, they are defeated and the village is safe. Pirates invade they are not defeated village is on fire. Stage two put out fire save village, fire runs rampant village burns.
If the event is dynamic I would expect something like pirates invade, possible to set fire to random number of buildings, they are defeated but depending on how much damage was done will depend on how much repairs need to be made. Pirates invade and the amount of invading forces is generated based on the amount of players in the area if high enough multiple bosses could spawn to help the pirate attack. And so on with random variables...
Obviously I have not played the game and if your able to have multiple outcomes and partial completion like saving half the village from the fire or 1/4 of the village from fire then fantastic but as far as I can tell the events have two outcomes per stage, victory or defeat. If I'm wrong and you can direct me to a video I would be most joyful.

So many complaints about hype. So *many* hands-on videos available out there for people to view and determine for themselves what the game is delivering. There's probably more video available to help people to decide about this game than any other game has ever offered prior to release. The only deception here is promoting the idea that GW2 is floating on nothing but hype because hype is intangible. Gameplay footage is anything but.
Open your eyes and make a decision, because hiding your misgivings behind the hype canard is a weak cop out.
I pre-purchased, and it had nothing to do with the hype....Buy the game if it looks like you will like it or get your money out of it.
I have a lot of concerns about many of the pve systems, but I have seen enough in videos and other things to feel I will easily get my money out of it....So if all my pve/system concerns end up being bad, I will be ok, and if most are good, I will be happy.
WAR was the last mmo I listened to the hype on.
When topics like this show up, it would be interesting if people simply started posting videos of Warhammer's hype.
Not sure i could disagree more with everything the OP said.
Everything about the build up to this game reminds me of every other MMO that has come out since WoW and failed. It's always the media going "how amazing is this" because they go to some controlled event and are told by the developer why this and that feature are so innovative. Then you get to play the game and realise the smoke and mirrors behind that feature and realise it isn't so great. I bet this "dynamic" content isn't so dynamic when the game is released, people get to play for longer and get bored and see patterns in it. PC Gamer even said it seems rather scripted in their playthrough of GW2 and didn't seem that enthusiastic about it.
Obviously it's all scripted. What i like about this system is that it encourages people to go out and explore and find stuff, as apposed to going hub to hub with everyone else on the server.
Everything is warning me off like the horrible choice of races, I think they all look like they came from an Asian MMO such as AION, Tera, Arche Age or Lineage etc. They have that horrible rabbit looking race which annoys me, it's like what Final Fantasy does with some small midget race to try and be "cute" because I guess the culture over there loves that stuff. Then you have how you teleport all over the world, which really breaks the immersion for me and just feels more like a game than a world. You had them stupid looking teleport doorways which I don't understand why they're a colour in wall.... looks more placeholder to me. They could just have a doorway where you can see into the next zone so it feels a bit more immersive.
I actually agree and am not a fan of the teleporting, but the races? C'mon now. This is the first western developed MMO that actually doesn't look like absolute crap to me. We seem to have some fascination with ugly over here and can't design human looking characters to save our lives.
The worst thing of all is I thing all the classes really bland, I've watched countless videos of them all and everyone praising them for being so amazing and unique and yet they all sort of look the same. I mean without the "trinity" they all do the same thing and they don't really look all that unique either. When you play TF2 you even have a trinity and every character is really unique and sticks out. You have your favourite class but you love to play them all because they all have their own personality and are really different. You have the DPS classes, the tank classes and the healer but the difference is you don't need the trinity to win because it is twitch based so it requires skill to win.
Watching and playing are 2 different things. All of the professions play differently.
There are no mounts which are something everyone likes to get, they're the ultimate loot and running around everywhere is so much more fun with a mount. There is no open PVP either, it's all battleground based like SWTOR was where you have them calling Ilum as World PVP when it isn't because it isn't...
I'm sure mounts will be coming in an expansion and please don't compare WvW to Ilum. 4 huge maps vs. 1 broken one with useless objectives and let's not forget 2 faction PVP doesn't work.
I just find the whole game bland really, the story just doesn't excite me, the world just looks rather generic and the art style just looks like another generic fantasy Asian MMO.
The world and art style look freaking amazing. Obviously this is just opinion but i strongly believe you have to have an eye for aesthetics. Daniel Dociu's work is not only beautiful but award winning. Now i may be biased due to absolutely hating western art style, so take that as you will.
err so during the TOR beta you didnt have fanboys screaming how awesome the game was over and over?
"GW2 is the best game in the world and have killed wow"
"GW2 is has the best graphics ever so much better than anythign else out there"
GW" blah blah blah blah"
I wish i was wrong you know but over and over super hyped up games like this have just turned out to be average ok games.. not saying they sucked bad or anything but where nothing special.. I have not played one MMORPG that was super hyped that lived up to the hype and its simple as that.
Again.. that's not at all what I said. Please don't put words in my mouth. What I said was there was a lot of that for TOR, but there were also a lot of complaints as well. Many of those complaints were getting deleted on the official forums, though, or people were getting flat-out banned for it. Again, it was obvious. Who people chose to listen to (fanboys, haters, cynics, or god forbid actually develope their own opinion) is an entirely separate issue. Personally, I prefer to do the later.
As for what people will say, who cares. I've been in some betas recently for other games that were FAR worse. I was in one where the general chat was flooded with "GW2 Sucks!!! LOLOLOL!!" spam almost the entire time. It's the internet, there are asshats, it's not worth arguing over. This isn't unique to GW2, it just happens to be the latest thing coming out. We had this w/ TERA, we had this w/ TOR, we had this w/ WAR, we had this w/ WoW, we had this w/ EQ2, and on and on and on. Not sure why anyone would base their decisions off of that spam, but w/e, that's on them.
As for the game being hyped, this is probably the most transparent MMO I have ever seen. If you mean hyped as in 'people are talking about it', then sure. However unlike most other MMOs, none of the other definitions apply. These aren't promises, people aren't raving about 'there will be this, or there will be this', people are talking about features that we can see are ingame working, and they want to play them. Huge difference.
You haven't played one MMO that was super hyped that lived up to it? I haven't played a single MMO no one talked about that was succesful. Maybe it's time to stop listening to general chat, and start looking at the facts? All games have them, some make it easier to find than others. After all, if you have impossible expectations, then it's going to be impossible to get enjoyment out of anything.
- I'll leave you with this food for thought:
This game has more available information than any other MMO I can think of has had prior release. If you haven't seen this, go to google and search whatever you're wondering about. Most topics will come up w/ at least a dozen videos. Furthermore, this is one of the cheapest AAA games (for consumers) since GW1. Content for content, how many games would give you as much as this one does for 60$?
It may not be for you, but the answer to that is staring you right in the face. All you have to do is look at it.
Everything about the build up to this game reminds me of every other MMO that has come out since WoW and failed. Every MMO where I've found the classes to look really bland, I find that I don't like it. I just end up levelling 4 or 5 characters to level 20 before realising I hate them all, they all feel watered down or the same and just get bored and quit. The best MMO for classes was WoW, every class felt so unique, so fun to play and they all looked different, you could tell what class someone was playing just by looking at them in a split second. I found myself playing every class because I loved them all and not because I was struggling to find one I liked.

Guess I'll see on Friday, though I bet I'll hate it and it'll be more money down the drain.... only good news is the login screen is nice lol. I hope I eat my words and it's the best MMO since WoW. It's just all the fans as well saying how amazing it is that makes me think even more that it isn't. Every MMO it's the same story where either they're excited to be the only ones in beta so they feel part of a club and have to defend it or they believe the media hype who only get to see it in controlled bursts. They always drive players away as well when they claim that everything they say is wrong.
Like I said I hope on Friday I'm eating my words.
A wall of text just to tell the world why you hate guild wars 2. Do you have too much time kid?
Well try it then. If you hate it, please just move on. Dont come back with another page of "I gave this game a chance, but"
There are hundreds of thousands and even millions out there who loves GW2. Try telling them they are all wrong because you think it so.
Looking at your responses, you seem to be devoting a lot of time to a game you dislike. Look at he power and influence of Guild Wars 2. Even HATERS CANNOT RESIST.
When topics like this show up, it would be interesting if people simply started posting videos of Warhammer's hype.
If only those were easy to find.
However, it's the same issue. It wasn't that hard to find out what type of game WAR was. I actually really enjoyed the PvP in that game. It's biggest issues were it being buggy as hell, and a little rushed. However, you have a case were people seem to be holding more stock in what 'random forum kid #9000' says, over actually info they are seeing.
It's like people have either forgotten, or never learned to formulate their own opinions. Worst case scenario, find a reviewer who's opinions & tastes matches your own, and start from there. It's really not all that difficult, just requires a little bit of work, to save a lot of avoidable headaches / letdowns. It also helps keep your expectations in check. These games take real time, and cost real money. No one is going to have the budget to create a virtual replica of planet earth, in which you can fight in real time w/ no loading screens. Not in this decade at the very least.
So, this guy I know is just finishing up helping repel a centaur assault and is informed that they've stolen some needed supplies. Killing the centaur leaders and recovering the supplies would go a long ways to helping quell their future attacks. Sounds like a plan, so off he goes to lend a hand. Fighting through the local fauna as he approaches the camp he notices out of the corner of his eye a cave that you'd easily miss if you weren't nearly on top of it. Hmm... a look inside the cave shows a different type of denizens, and at the back of the cave a veteran of said group, silver level. OK, a slight diversion, but this shouldn't take long. So in the cave he goes, killing the bad guys between him and the veteran. After a fun filled battle, he defeats the veteran and gets some decent gear, actually an upgrade. Sweet! So, as he's about to leave... something catches his eyes.
Looking up, the cave actually seems to appear to keep going!? Wait... there's no way up there to check... or is there? Back-tracking towards the mouth of the cave he notices off to the side that a few fairly innocuous rocks along the wall actually can be jumped up on, and they lead to an easily missed ledge. This ledge continues up and over the back of the cave. The prior event now nearly forgotten, our fearless friend manages to jump up the rocks, onto the ledge, and to the back of the cave. Out of view of the ground floor, the cave opens up into a crystalline laced cavern of sparkling beauty. Whoa. However, there are more than pretties to be had here as voices drift into range... a couple veteran individuals, both three or four levels above our hero, are now overheard chatting about things dark and evil. He also sees, behind these beings, something along the back of the cave, nearly but not quite hidden. Can't quite tell what, and the only way there is through these two...

Quantum mechanics would like to have a word with you.
You pre-purchased the game for full price before a release date was set.
You aren't hyped. You're way past hyped. You already bought the game.
If I know i will buy the game anyway, where is the different on buying it now or at launch?
That have nothing to be with hype, fanaticism or anything else....
I was directing my critisism towards the OP. His synthetic lack of hype is completely smashed in the face by the fact that he was already hyped enough to buy the product. Before he played it. Before any real reviews happened. Before the CS was released. Before post level 30 content was shown. Before two of the starting areas were shown.
Obviously he bought into the hype that he is attempting to make sound silly.
I certainly don't see a problem with someone that likes the game buying a pre-purchase at all. After all, I pre-purchased too.
DEs are dynamic in that if they are not completed, if they are ignored, then the "bad guys" take over. I read that this is not just a 10 minute take over or a one hour take over, but more like a week before it resets. Buildings can be destroyed or set on fire, NPCs killed, etc... If that happens and you needed to get something from that area then you will need to fight those forces off which is in itself, a different DE than the DE that started this whole thing to begin with. And even then, once you have fought off the invaders, part of the DE would be to help rebuild, gather wood, things like that to put buildings back together, and if you don't do that part then invaders come back and take over, just faster this time.
They'll also have DEs where it's something as simple as this farmer is going to lose his farm because he doesn't have enough people to milk his cows, or pick lettuce from the ground.
They put in all kinds of things to do.
I hope all the detractors have the balls to post their apologies on Monday, and if the game sucks, I will be one of the first to eat crow on here.

See I can't speak on others view of what happen. But for me, I was very hyped up on Warhammer, after coming from a major disapointlment in World of Warcraft as a Melee Paladin. I couldn't take it much longer. So Warhammer caught my eye. I didn't know anything about the Warhammer IP.
Being a big time Paladin fan, the Warrior Priest caught my eye.. I went to the forum. Asking questions (remember I didn't know about the Warhammer IP stuff), and I was bashed BIG TIME!!!! When I saw certain things in the videos that I was turned off by, I shared my opinion on it.
For example, I didn't like the Gender Locked Classes,
And I didn't like the Human's Melee animations. I felt the animations for Melee took a step backwards from World of Warcraft.
Things like that.
Well I was bashed, attacked, and banned. The community de-hyped me, not the game media itself.
So I can understand how some people could have been overhyped by Warhammer. Because I was to. I just happen to have been blessed to have experienced that kind of community to turn me away from getting hyped into it. So I kinda owe that corrupt community a big THANK YOU!!!

This also happens in Rift, just not as flashy graphically with animations as GW2.
I'm sure if you think hard enough you'll find plenty of games that were "hyped" and came out pretty good, depending on your defintion of what hype is. Most games use CGI/trailers where as GW2 seemed to get hyped by fans based off actual gameplay *shrug*.
The OP whole post just seems like a rant basically and saying "it won't beat WoW". When you say things like WoW has the best classes and you'll hate the game before even trying it during Beta makes you look like a 9 year old. Wouldn't suprise me if WoW introduced you to the genre.

So, wait, you spend a bunch of time writing incorrect statements (relating that the media are the ones hyping this game) and critical opinions (I just find the whole game bland really) only to finally say that you pre-purchased the game????? Does anyone else see the flaw in that logic?
I can only imagine that you have quite a bit of disposable income so you can just buy unfinished games that you already don't like....Forgive me but your whole post has got to be the strangest one I've ever read on this site and that's saying something.
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

No you're wrong. You constantly post stuff about GW2 acting like an expert about it and you don't know. I played Rift. If no one takes out the rifts there, they close up by themselves after a few minutes. They do not matter and nothing bad happens. That's why no one does them anymore. There are no consequences if the rifts aren't closed and within like 10 minutes, it's as though they were never there.
We all know you hate GW2 with a passion, but at least come up with valid reasons. WAR's PQs failed too because they had no consequence on the game world and after a while, no one participated.
You know one minor little thing that I think will contribute greatly to GW2's success? You don't have to click a join party button. When people show up for an event, they are all part of the group.
Also, the DEs scale up and down in difficulty based on how many people are participating. Actively participating by the way, so they can't be griefed by idiots showing up just to sit around doing nothing in order to increase the amount of NPCs attacking.
So anyways, please tell me exactly why you think DEs will fail. You have never backed up your claims with anything tangible. You just spout off a bunch of crap and it's annoying. Will you be here on Monday to say you were wrong? I doubt it. You remind me of the callers on sports radio talk shows that call in before a big game talking smack about how their team is going to crush the other team and then your team loses and we don't hear from you for a couple weeks. Buzz off dude, you're just annoying. I can already imagine your reply to this though, no substance and just this "Yeah you only want to hear from other fanbois, enjoy your fail game hahahaha!!!"

It's just a confusing mentallity to me... Seems people just want to whine.
There are so many games out there that I AM convinced by in which to spend my time, I don't see the need to gamble on ones that aren't.

One would be able to argue that there are not that many MMORPGs out there. Once you've played WoW, you have played plenty of the games already out.
Expect a trollstorm today. It is rather difficult to accomplish now. Imagine the trolling difficulty after the weekend.
I went to MMORPG after the BWE and attempted to troll GW2 fans and their game and this happened......
Life IS Feudal

The havok engine and euphoria both do dynamic physics/motion synthesis. You can see it in games like force unleashed, grand theft auto 4, red dead redemption, etc.
Now don't get me wrong I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here with a dynamic physics enigine vs a scripted event.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsUcGBL56Ng
"classification of games into MMOs is not by rational reasoning" - nariusseldon
Love Minecraft. And check out my Youtube channel OhCanadaGamer
Try a MUD today at http://www.mudconnect.com/So many complaints about hype.
When topics like this show up, it would be interesting if people simply started posting videos of Warhammer's hype.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Not sure i could disagree more with everything the OP said.
Obviously it's all scripted. What i like about this system is that it encourages people to go out and explore and find stuff, as apposed to going hub to hub with everyone else on the server.
I actually agree and am not a fan of the teleporting, but the races? C'mon now. This is the first western developed MMO that actually doesn't look like absolute crap to me. We seem to have some fascination with ugly over here and can't design human looking characters to save our lives.
Watching and playing are 2 different things. All of the professions play differently.
I'm sure mounts will be coming in an expansion and please don't compare WvW to Ilum. 4 huge maps vs. 1 broken one with useless objectives and let's not forget 2 faction PVP doesn't work.
The world and art style look freaking amazing. Obviously this is just opinion but i strongly believe you have to have an eye for aesthetics. Daniel Dociu's work is not only beautiful but award winning. Now i may be biased due to absolutely hating western art style, so take that as you will.
Again.. that's not at all what I said.
Obviously you bought into the hype.
You pre-purchased the game for full price before a release date was set.
You aren't hyped. You're way past hyped. You already bought the game.
Oderint, dum metuant.
If I know i will buy the game anyway, where is the different on buying it now or at launch?
That have nothing to do with hype, fanaticism or anything else....
You'll believe tomorrow when the mmorpg forums go silent because we're all playing it.
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

Quantum mechanics would like to have a word with you.

Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!
