I'm new to DAoC. I just bought the Catacombs expansion and waiting for the updater to finish as I type this. I just want to know which realm/race/class combo is good for someone who likes to play a hybrid class? Think of Shaman in WoW, who can play many roles but do not excel in one. Sort of like the jack of all trades And which class is most wanted?

Hibernia is the hybrid-realm. Albion has some hybrid classes, and I think Midgard have pure specialist classes, although with the Darkness Rising expansion coming soon, it will introduce the new sub-classing feature, so we can all be hybrids.

I would say that Albion tends to have the least well rounded classes, while Hibernia tends to have the most well rounded. There are exceptions. For example, the Midgard bolter is very well rounded.

Yes actually, I did mean in comparison to other realms bolters :-/ I've played all of them pretty extensivley and the Runie is by far my fave. Would I recommend a bolter over a hybrid for somone that wants a "jack-of-all trades" toon? No of course not.
As to Albion having some powerfull well rounded classes, I never said anywhere that they didn't. Notice I use the words "tends" and "there are exceptions."

Minstril is one of the most uber but difficult classes to play.
They have allot of cool stuns DD and weapons. Plus stealth, climb walls and pets higher than your level. Just need to learn how to play them is the hard part. Lots of buttons.
Ya, if I had my way, Minstrels would be getting the nerf bat across the face...

If you play hib I dont know what if any valid complaint you have about your realms classes. Practically every hib class is well rounded and very very viable.
At various levels of RvR(low level BGS, high level BGs, and Frontier RvR) I've gone up against Minstrels in 1v1 and I can't even remember that last time I won a fight against one.
The reason I think they have an unfair advantage is Mythic gave them the best of too many worlds. They are the only class that can stealth with 27% absorb armor, they can charm monsters that alone can hand solo players of their same level, they have insta stun, mezz, styled weapon skills, various chants, AND if they have SOS they can cheat death when ever they want! I don't know how anyone can NOT realize they are incredibly overpowered.
I really do not know why Mythic gave them so much utility, the Minstrel class should of gotten studded armor instead of chain and never been given the ability to charm, and even after that they would still be formidable. I think they tried to fit too many abilitys they left out of other classes into one.
Hibs have every right to complain, same as albs and mids. Do I have any hope of this every getting fixed? absolutely not, but I still am going to have my opinion be heard.

Anyway, this is still a good game and I love RvR. Just been my belief that Minstrels got a bit too much of an advantage when they were made. Thats all.
Anyway, back to the question at hand...
I would suggest playing a character on each realm to about level 5 or 10. If you don't like the feel of the character or the people, try a different one. Some might say this is not enough time to truly get a feel, but playing a character for 40 levels and then deciding its not going to get any better stinks.

To the OP, in case you hadn't nocticed, 90% of the peaple that play this game feel thier realm is underpowered, while reaml X is overpowered. Don't fret over it too much, every realm can be fun. Which realm you like "the feel" of is probably the most imoprtant consideration (as someone above mentioned).

yeah if you think a class is over powered you should play it.
Then you cans ee if its over pwoer or not. Allot of time a player might have allot of good RA's and be a real good player and you might think its just because they are over powered.
Like everone says vampiirs are over powered and that might be true. But one story was a vamp that was on a bridge getting attack by three tanks .. well he jumps of the bridge and the three tanks follow him. They all take falling damage and the vamp has fall safe so he doesn't take falling damage and easily finishes off the tanks.
On the other hand I was playing my Sheild pally and a vamp jumped me without buffs and I slamed him.
Well the slam makes him run out of power so hes hitting me only with his sword and slam him again and again until hes dead. It was pretty funnny.
I am thinking seriously about going and buying a copy.
If I go healer, I pressume I am just setting myself up for the MMO-standard?
Namely: "Healer! Kill it!..." respawn.. "Healer! Kill it first!"... respawn... Log.
Or do healers actually have some defence?

there are three healer types one per ream. There are also other secondary healers. But the main healers and their attributes:
Midgard: Healer
They get healing and crowd control. They have aera effect stuns and mezzes. They can wear chain armor and small sheilds and the can use a hammer. However they can not do very much damage. These are impossible to play solo and require playing in a group.
Hibernia: Druid
Then can use sheild and a sword. They also can sumon a pet. proably themost soloable of the healers.
Albion: Cleric
They can wear chain and have one insta PBEA stunn they can use. They also can use smallsehild and small crush weapons. They also have a smite line which they can do some damage with. they are difficult to solo but not as bad as the healer.
All the healing classes more so then any other are best to play in groups.

Midgard's secondary healing class is a Shaman, whom can heal quite well too and are different to play then Healers. I don't know very much about them though.
And your toon can be specc'd more than one way and it can make your roll very different within the same class. For example, you can spec in Pacification as a Healer or Augmentation. Basically Pac Healers are needed for crowd control (favored in RvR) and Aug Healers are great for PvE and buffs. Two totally different styles of playing for ONE class! You also can respec in-game for free at levels 20 and 40, and pay for it any other time so it's not pick one at level 5 when you know nothing and stay with it.
