Will GW2 offer PVE Only servers?

cesmode8cesmode8 Member UncommonPosts: 431

Much like any mmo, will GW2 offer PVE servers?  Meaning, I do not fear getting ganked, and participate in pvp via queue or flag.  I had a friend ask if there were only pvp servers..just lookiing for clarification. And which servers are pve only?

    PvE and PvP

The world of Tyria will be PvE. There are no plans to have PvP servers.

There will be a separation of skills between PvP and PvE, this is to ensure balance for either play style can be pursued more effectively.

PvP is supported and will include structured, instanced, team based games and a large zone known as 'The Mists' which will have massive World vs World vs World combat. You can jump in to team based games on an equal footing with the same character level and item quality as everyone else. WvWvW can be joined at any time, on entering you character will be kicked up to level 80, your skills ad gear however will remain the same. You can progress in WvW as you would in PvE by unlocking more skills and getting better gear. Players will drop items, none of these items will be from the player themselves but from a loot table, you won't lose any of your gear to other players.

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Every server will have both PvE and PvP...

But they are totally seperated. There is PvE in the wide open world, then there is instanced competitive and structured PvE, and then there is a kind of seperate world where 3 servers battle eachother in a wide open world.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Because the developers have said it a thousad times over. It's the most important principle in the games design. PvE is completely cooperative, no PVP at all. For that you have the designated WvW and PVP areas.

    Google is your friend.

    http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2#Player_versus_Player

    Player versus Player

There will be two types of PvP available in Guild Wars 2: World PvP and Structured PvP; both formats take place within the Mists.

    World PvP

World PvP will allow you to play characters of any level, using the skills that you have in your possession at that particular time. This level discrepancy will be relaxed by a side-kicking system intended to provide a bridging point between PvE and structured PvP. It will be on a larger scale than the original Guild Wars PvP with large battles which take place over a long period with people coming and going.

The battle has been likened to an RTS and will have a number of different objectives which can be met such as taking guard towers or defending choke points or joining a larger battle to take a castle.

Victory in World PvP will confer benefits to your world. This may include improved drop rates, better energy regeneration or other bonuses.

    Structured PvP

Structured PvP is similar to today's GvG. It will allow you to enter the game at maximum level with all skills, races, items and classes automatically unlocked

All of this takes place in its own area not in the open pve world.

All PvP in GW2 takes place in the Mists. There's no PvP on the PvE servers at all. So it's true... all servers are PvE servers. Basically, in a nutshell, aside from competitive 5v5 PvE you cannot kill people on your own server. At all. Period.

Most of the Guild Wars 2 world is purely PvE. No PvP takes place in the PvE world. You can't gank or be ganked while out doing PvE in the PvE zones.

Guild Wars 2 also has a PvP areas where players from your server battle two other servers for control of strategic points. This PvP area is completely separate from the PvE area.

You do not have to participate in either. You can play entirely in the PvP area, the PvE area, or a mix of both depending on what you want.

PvP is set in areas away from the PvE game, this is fact, you don't have to do any PvP at all if you don't want to :)

I would recommend at least giving WvW a try, it's the kind of PvP anyone can jump in to and enjoy from the sounds of it.

Will WvWvW be against the same two  other servers each time? Or random each time?

PvE and PvP are separated in GW2. Anet wants all PvP to be consensual, and open world PvP does not fit with the type of game they are trying to build (cooperative). So therefore, when you in the natural world of Tyria, doing DE, personal story, etc., it's entirely PvE. There is no PvP in PvE areas. This is for EVERY server. You never have to worry about being ganked while level or doing DE. PvP destroys the sense of cooperation Anet is trying to create with the DE and xp/loot system.

All Pvp is consensual. There are 2 types of PvP, structured and casual.

Structured PvP are essentially the tournaments/hotjoinable matches. Each team has an equal number of people, and are at the same level gear/power-wise. The only advantage (in theory) that players should have over one another is their skill with whatever profession they choose.

Casual PvP is the World vs World. Over a 2 week period, 3 servers fight against each other for control over 4 very large maps. And I mean very large. Go look at some of the WvW footage to see what I mean. Casual PvP is NOT balanced. This means, you can be a group of 10 going up againts a group of 40, or your server may only have 10 people and the other server may have 100, etc. Every 2 weeks, rankings are updated and you are placed against servers of similar rankings (so servers that don't really do WvW will be placed against servers that don't really do WvW).

From what I understand it will be different everytime. The servers will be matched up against each other based on how well they did in previous matches. So the servers that show a strong PvP population will not be matched up against a server that shows a weak PvP population.

GW2 is not like other MMOs.  So assuming anything will be similar because it was done in a past MMO is not very useful (some things may be close other things far different)  best to just assume different and learn more about it, goto GW2 Wiki Self serve knowledge!

PVP vs PVE vs RPG servers do not exist.   World level PvP (or really, ganking free for all)  is not a "feature" in GW2.

There is structured PVP ( The characters will be given a fixed maximum level, and all skills and items will be available)

And WvWvW ( is sort of a Planetside sort of battleground/zone, where people bettle for there server)

RPG servers? well they really never worked well . . RPG if you want to.

A lot of these questions can be answered by many of the simple, hundreds of FAQs around. I have my doubts this person is really at all interested in the game, because anyone can read the basic information on ArenaNet's website.

Yes a lot of basic "overview" info on the systems/game is on their site.  Specific questions like "will be be playing against the same servers each week or different servers" is probably not there.  And tbh, I dont think I've seen a quote from them saying all servers will be PVE only, where PVP is accessed via que/instance.  Maybe I dont scour every bit of info they post, but its not as blatantly obvious as you think.

I do have a life, career, and family, so I dont have time to read every bit of literature on the game before posting.

However, my thanks to everyone that provided useful information.

This is my only grip with the game that there is no pvp server, I do understand why they wil not be having pvp servers but I still with they would at least give the option to have a pvp server.

The way it could work is just make all players targetable unless you are grouped with them or if that person is not on your friends list, this will in-turn promote players to add to there friends list and more grouping.

I'm sure in time if the players voice really peak up about this they will add such a server so makes sure you let Arenanet know your feeling on this matter.

PvP in GW2 works like this.

You can enter PvP at level 1, open your character screen, click on the crossed swords (last tab) and click "Be in the Mists" and off you go.  All PvP is separate from PvE and appart from structured PvP you cannot kill someone from your own server.

    Structured PvP

This works like battlegrounds do in WoW and other MMOs.  You enter the Mists and your character is automatically levelled to 80 and has all skills/traits unlocked and you are give a basic (and ugly) set of gear with max stats on it.  You then queue for one of the 5v5 maps available and you PvP.  This is always against players from your server and you can see their names, guild tags etc.

    WvW PvP

This is the open world PvP and is against 2 other servers.  WvW is a 2 week battle, after which the servers are redistributed again.  So you could end up against the same servers again or you could find yourself fighting better or worse PvPers depending on your server's overall performance in the past 2 weeks.

In WvW your character is boosted to level 80, but your skills/traits/etc are no unlocked so level 80 players will have an advantage over level 1s, although its rare this is noticible because most fights in WvW are not 1 vs 1.

Enemies in WvW show up as Green/Blue/Red Defender or Attacker.  You do not get to see their character names, although I believe guild tags still show up.

Nah, it really doesn't work in GW2. The whole game (PvE side) is designed around the fact that you cannot kill someone from your own server. Cross-profession combos, dynamic event scaling, nodes, everything is built around the community working together. You'd have to make some severe changes at the very core of the coding to enact something like that and have it radiate out. Not worth the effort.

We tend to get so caught up in our GW2 bubble that we forget that there *are* people out there who are only recently hearing about the game for the first time.  Sometimes people want some discussion to go with their information rather than just reading it from a canned FAQ.  That's what a forum is for.

It would be nice to see them add guild vs guild wars to the game but I suspect that even that will not be out in the open world due to the separation of pve and pvp skills. At best it might be added as a special type of arena style combat like they have in GW.

Generally this is it. Servers with lower numbers during previous WvW events, will be paired off against other lower numbered servers to help promote balance and equal out if populations are not equal. Same with higher ranking servers. Over time the best (highest rank servers) will be duking it out, I guess.
