I am curious after hearing from current XIV players about the improvements since I last played. I am prepared to sub for a month, HOWEVER the main reason I quit was not due to the poorly optimised engine causing my graphics card to melt, and I do not want to risk it again, or play all month on the lowest setting, so does anyone know how far optimization as come since January?
Also are magic classes much more powerful than melee? I may have to solo most of the time, could do with playing the better dpsers.

Game runs much better than it did at launch. Definitely worth checking out with the new legacy / welcome back campaign. Right now the cool thing is Black Mage (Thaumaturge) which is a DPS Magic Nuker. I play Paladin, which is arguably the least useful class at the moment, but luckily SE is making us better in the next patch
Either way, game is a blast. Learning curve is there, it is FF after all, but its a great game.
Better optimization will not occur until the release of 2.0. The engine the game was built on was not really suitable for an mmo, so it was neccessary to rebuild the engine from the ground up. That is a large part of what 2.0 is, along with the new maps and UI. There was some measures taken to lighten the load on computers, but it won't change significantly until then.
The mage classes are fairly standard. High damage, low defense. I usually kill an average monster in one or two hits, which is neccesary because I lose HP quickly. Thurmaturge is fairly quick to level because the rapid kills makes chain bonuses easy to obtain.
But really, any class is soloable. Perhaps maybe archer might have the hardest time of it? I haven't played that class in quite a while.
LOL
That happened to me too. It was a fairly old geforce in my case though and I got a full refund.
AFAIK there will be a free 10 day testing phase for previous players, after the upcoming patch. Logging in and seeing how it performs shouldn't be too much of a risk.
does this game come with a free month sub? i was considering buying it when i saw gamestop is having a deal where i can get it for 50% off if i download it, making it only 10 bucks to buy
Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today!
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.
FFXI Character: Satimasu
FFXI Server: Valefor
FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
there will be a free first month with client, same as usual, i wouldnt bother till 2.0 unless u can get the client cheap like i did
2.0 beta is in dec i think
the only way to get 30 fps was at the lowest possible graphics settings, making the game look 16bit.
I don't think anything has changed in that regards since the last major update last year which introduced a few more options like "range".
Having said that, i'm running at 60 FPS (vsync enforced) at maximum graphics quality except of 2x MSAA "only" and no AO settings checked.
AO = ambient occlusion, i don't know how they implemented it, but even my GTX680 can't produce over 16 FPS with that activated. Considering even a GTX480 wasn't aviable when they released, i doubt AO can be run at all fluid. Some guy just did a raw implementation which probably needs 2x GTX690 in SLI.. if not even 780GTX next year. (it's not meant to work at all).
But it really doesn't matter much considering this whole client and engine is gone with 2.0
I hope the changes make it a better game cause i am a FF fan and when FFXIV launched i was really disappointed
Yes, thanks Skydiver, I would wait for 2.0, but I want to see the events leading up to it in game, and if i get into it enough, pay the 3 months neeeded for legacy, so I'd like best performance I can get. I guess i'll find out on the 10th.
I started after seeing the reviews, so i was prepared, also FFXI was for me even harder to get into. Even if all the changes are not enough, or my PC still can't handle it, at least there is 2.0, it really does look like the game it should have been in 2010.
