If yes, do you also play SWG? And how similar are the design intents of the EQ2 "CU" to the SWG one?
I'm having this general theory lately that SOE is trying to apply some sort of streamlined design philosophy to all their games. I play MXO and it seems like they want to do a big combat revision there too.
Is this the year of SOE Combat Upgrades for its titles? Heh.

Yes,theres a CU for EQ2.But as far as i can tell, its just tweakiing spell stats. Not sure though, you'd probaly get more info out of someone on the test server
Its also changing the amount of diffrent player attribute and how they work in combat. The amount of HP and power, and the same for NPCs. And how NPCs use their spells/actions in combat. 23rd august beta update had a note about "NPCs conserving power and not use all the power at the start of a fight", and todays notes said
"Common NPCs should be less likely to use spells and arts that incapacitate the player (i.e. stuns, interrupts, stifles)."
The same patchnotes also said: Every ten levels (level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60) you can now choose from a list of four spells or arts to upgrade to Master II quality.
We'll soon have a few very difficult choices to make. Just hope its not one of the spells I already have Master on
The "whole" changelog for combat "upgrade" (I call i change) is found here:

Its a whole lot of changes, if its bug-free and issue-free the day they patch it its a world first
And as a "btw", here is the Troubadour changes posted by a player, and for once a Troubadour trying to do the best out of the 180 degree turn on that class

No, there is not a Combat Upgrade for EQ2. "Combat Upgrade" is the marketing term applied to SWG, NOT EQ2, by the SWG developers for a long, long, long overdue revamp of the combat in that game, which many players did not like.
The new combat changes for EQ2 have been called a revamp, adjustments, and changes. At no point has any developer posted anywhere claiming that it is supposed to be an upgrade. That is BS that test server players and other uninformed people are spreading to make it seem like SOE is screwing you. If you think it's an upgrade, you've been screwed by this group of malcontents.
See for yourself.
That post is from the JUNE producer's letter that explains flat out that power will be tuned down, before any of the adjustments hit test.
It is not a combat upgrade, PERIOD.

as said, its a revamp in that theyre just changing long standing problems with the classes (even if some people think theyre classes are only getting nerfed - they arent) by changing the stats and the way some effects and spells are used/applied. its NOT a CU in the way that theyre changing the fundamentals of how the combat works.
for an idea of some of the kinds of changes theyre making, a paladin posted an excellent review of the skills currently in the game compared with the new revamped ones. keep in mind that paladins in the current game are over-powered damage wise (ill be the first to admit it) but our taunts suck:

Okay so EQ2 is getting a CU :P
It doesn't matter what they say or the end results are, or what you call it, its all semantics. By CU I meant major changes and revision to classes and how combat works -- which is basically what you guys are saying, whether this or good or bad in the long run wasn't what I was asking. I was just wondering if SOE was pulling a SWG on EQ2, and they are, doesn't mean the changes will have the same negative impact as they do on SWG, though they likely will since its SOE :P
It's hard to explain why the combat changes are going to be good for the over-all health of the game to someone who doesn't know the game. But yes basically the changes are bringing a balance to the game, where some classes were under-performing while others were over-powered in areas they had no business doing so. For example, assassins and rangers were to be great damage dealer yet they fell behind other classes and even some tanks with similar gear could outdamage them. Well that is going to change.
I can't talk about the SWG changes as I never played that game, but I can tell you the combat changes in EQ2 are sorely needed to bring some balance to the classes.
Wrong. It's not an upgrade, as I stated and pointed out. At no point has it been called an upgrade, and only a clueless moron would call it that after being shown the reality of the situation.
The only combat revamp patch EVER called a "Combat Upgrade" was the SWG patch, and I see no reason to call every combat adjustment to every game on the market a "Combat Upgrade" just because one game did it. That's about as intelligent as calling all soda "Coke".
You don't even play the game, so next time you decide to try to cut it down (and it's blatantly clear that you are), go make some constructive criticism on the Matrix forums instead, because without a lot of that the game is going to be cancelled by the end of 06.

Hey what up Jodo?
Comparing the SWG CU to EQ2's tweaking of certain abilities and spells, is like comparing MLB to T-ball. If you played SWG before and after you would realize that the CU has basically made SWG a new game, just in the same universe. As for EQ2, like all new MMO's they are basically fixing bugs as they collect more data on them. A group heal might draw too little or too much aggro, they fix it. A minor DD spell might cost more power than a comparable more powerful spell, they fix it.
If you want to gripe about how SOE handled SWG, I am there with you my friend, the SWG I play now is the game that should have been released, not the broken one many of us paid to beta test for them. At the same time if you haven't played EQ2 don't knock it. I was in the since the beta and they have done a pretty good job since then. Now go back to playing WoW or whatever game is so much better than EQ2 (since you have no EQ2 experience to base your opinion from). Me I'll stay here and play a game that I actually enjoy playing. (And yes I did play WoW and dropped a 34 Orc shammy and 2 other 20+ chars, since the Blizzard honor system ruined that game).
hey Bro how are things OUTCONUS?
Just stiring things up where ever I can.
Yes, you are correct. There is going to be changes, not anything comparable to the CU in swg, but it is infact, a CU.
When is this planned to happen? I have though about coming back to EQ2. I played for about a month. I enjoyed the game. I just didn't have the time to play both EQ2 and WOW. I think I might wait for some of these more major changes before I come back.
I would guess the patch hit live this week, or at latest next week. It will hit live before the expansion hit live, and that is the 13th? I would guess they like to have a big patch like this out a week in advance to iron out the bugs that *will* come with it.
