Questions From Someone Considering Playing

Hi. I played a closed beta weekend and was quite impressed with the way combat feels, but I couldn't muster the strength to get past the initial grind for just a single beta weekend in order to test out some of the later features that the game had to offer.

My main interest in any MMO is PvP, I don't mind the occasional instance or raid but the only reason I play is to gank people and get into fun fights. Battlegrounds really don't do it for me, it's partly why I quit WoW and am not that interested in Guild Wars. I find that when you're in a battleground it takes the fun out of it, the environment is way too controlled and it just feels plastic. One of the worst additions in WoW was Flying Mounts in my opinion, it all but killed World PvP, which I cherished so much in Vanilla.

I've heard great things about TERA's World PvP and the fact that you can declare war on other guilds to kill them anywhere any time. These are mechanics I am very much interested in. Anyway, to the questions.

1. How is the PvP in TERA? Is it balanced, is there a large amount of World PvP?
2. I play with 200ms to US servers because I live in Australia, is this game playable in laggy conditions? I know that you have to aim spells and such, would I be at a complete disadvantage with a high ping?
3. Does it get better at higher levels? Playing the starting area was mind numbing and boring, little variety in monsters and the quests are dull as anything. Does it get better at later levels?
4. How is the end game content?

That's about it, I really don't want to shell out another $60 plus subscription for a game that I'll play for under 10 hours like I did with pretty much every other over hyped MMO other than a select few. I do understand that if you are good you can eventually pay your subscription with in game currency, but that seems like a total end game scenario.

If you play on a PvP server, there is usually a lot of world pvp going on, yes. If you like ganking / random guild battles, then you will probably have a lot of fun w/ this game.

    - Not sure if i'd call it balanced. Gear & buffs seem to give way too big of an advantage later on in the game. Earlier on, though, the game does seem more or less balanced, class wise.

There is aiming in this game, but there is also a bit of a hitbox. As long as you aren't lagging too badly, you should be okay. 200ms may be a bit much, though.

Can't comment on the fun factor later in the game. The combat does get more customizable as you lvl, which is a good thing. As for endgame, it's your typical MMO. Aside from the world pvp it's basically grinding, & dungeons. There are open world bosses / BAMs you can try and solo as well, but they take a really long time to kill without a group.

I am in love with TERA, so my opinion is a bit biased.  I'll try to be as subjective as I can.

I am not huge into PVP, but from what I hear is that it is pretty evenly balanced so far.  Who knows what will change in the future.  I've read up on it a bit, Warriors are low DPS in PVE but roflstomp face in PVP due to the stuns and what not.  Lancers are a pain to take down.  Archers can kite you to death.  I think each class has their niche against one or multiple other classes.  I'll say that judging from the combat system, being that you need to manually aim, and dodge, and run out of the way, I think that PVP in TERA will be more about your situational awareness, mobility, skill, and ability to mutlitask while circle-straffing a player.  With that said, I can definately see players getting frustrated when they see someone wind up a cast when you are in the middle of an animation and you want to stop that animation to interrupt them.  From what Ive experienced, a lot of the animations cannot be stopped so easily once you are in the middle of it.  Maybe its just me, but I find that to be a pain when fighting a BAM, and i see him jump up in the air while in in the middle of an animation, I click dodge and get stomped because my character was still swinging his swords.  Frustrating, but not every game is perfect :)  As far as world PVP, I havent seen much of it yet.  I think there are specific zones while leveling in the higher areas for that.  I cannot comment on it, apologies.

Onto the game itself...I think that the questing is as basic and mediocre as any other game.  It does nothing too fancy.  Kill X, Gather Y.  In each zone you have repeatable quests that grant you tokens for gear if you so choose.  You can do them as much as you want in a day.  There are some escort quests you can partake in, which put you in an instance away from noobs.  People might say it gets grindy (probably because they know the rep of Asian-Western convert games) but with the combat system so engaging and constantly evolving mid-fight, I never feel like I am grinding.  Ever.  I also tend to mix up questing with BAM hunting.  I try to solo BAMs that are 2 or 3 levels beneath me, and usually get my a$$ handed to me.  However, if grouped with two of my friends, it is fun, engaging, and VERY difficult still.  There are no instanced raids...yet.  It would be interesting to see EME try to balance a raid with true action combat.  There are Nexuses(Nexii?) which are similar to Invasions in Rift.  Open world portals wheres waves of mobs come out of,  you must kill them and seal it.

I hope this helped at least a little.  Try BAM fights, they are ALOT of fun...I mean, ALOT!  I am glad there are no raids right now.  At max level Im going to have a blast gearing up so I can solo each of the BAMs, which will take me a long while to accomplish.

    1. So far I find it to very very balanced. I am only lvl 24 and I've had some great open world pvp fights.

2.I've only experienced lag in big mob quests but thats about it and it still wasnt that bad.

3.Once I got to lvl 15-20 Valley of Titans area the game started to move real fast and fun. The mobs are starting to get bigger and you need groups to take down most of them so far and it is enjoyable.

    4. End game I don't know, but I plan on ganking people and fighting in open world pvp for the most part when I hit max level.

Yes a PvP is where its at, whether you have fun in it or not will rely on your guild alone this is a team based pvp game in my view.

Your ping will matter in Tera as it is a skill based game by the time you have fired off your 3rd chain your enemy will be on a 4th or 5th rotation.

Let me also add, concerning the ping question, that there are NA players that have been playing Ktera for a year with 300ms ping.  There is a lag, but they seem to be doing fine with managing fights and PVP.  There are also Australian servers, I think..Oceanic?

    1. The classes are pretty well balanced

    2. You should be fine wth 200ms, at least in PvE. The mobs are quite forgiving (perhaps too forgiving?), probably to combat lag issues such as yours. In PvP you shouldn't be in a major disadvantage, but your margin of error will be smaller. It all depends on your net connection, if it's solid, you should be fine.

    3. It does get better, but don't expect a 180o change. If you didn't like the game at the starter island, the chances that you'll like it higher up are slim. Still, in order to have a more spherical experience, I'd suggest at least one BAM fight and an instance run. Just remember to slot some glyphs at lvl 20 before you do those.

    4. No idea, pre-order level cap was 38 out of max 60.
