Diablo Trailer - What's wrong with games

dontadowdontadow Member UncommonPosts: 1,005

Does anyone find the Diablo trailer they are running on television absolutely annoying and stupid.  I hear about this trailer on another website and the wife and I caught it while watching wrestling.

The entire trailer feels like the intro to a fantasy movie, but not a single bit of gameplay footage, or even what the heck the game is about.  It's just a bunch of cinematics that may not even be in the game.  It would be like advertising an avengers movie with a bunch of splash pages from avengers comics that have nothing to do with the storyline.

This isn't just Diablo, that was my tipping point, this is a good many video game commercials. There's never any ingame footage.  PRototype 2, Mass Effect 3,  great movie intros but no in game footage.  Why is that?

Because it works. Discerning consumers go look for gameplay footage online. The majority get hyped by those trailers however.

Also, I'm pretty sure gameplay trailers would be kind of boring and a waste of tv time, although it is possible to make a decent gameplay trailer. Depends on the game though.

This isn't anything new. Here is a commercial for D2 way back when

20 seconds of game play just isn't going to work, show some snappy CGI with some loud music and that will get ppl's attentions and they're want to find out more, just like a movie trailer in a cinema.

Video game trailers pretty much never feature gameplay. The reason being that their target audience doesn't really know what to do with gameplay. They probably don't know what DII is. Besides, they do not get enough time to show footage. It's just to catch attention and make people explore more.

This is normal. Has always been like this, even back in 2000 wtih DII's trailer. SW:TOR did the same thing quite recently, too.

TV commercials aren't meant to show anything of the game. They're meant to catch the eye and get people wondering "what the hell was THAT!?"

Then the internet does the rest of the work, and/or friends if they're in the know. And if you ARE in the know, it's to further build excitement for launch day. :D

Well, if anything, they are there to get you off your ass and look the game up on the net :).

As another little anecdote about this, I know a couple of people who got super excited for and purchased SWTOR based on the cg tv trailers.

One didn't even understand that it was an mmo, let alone what an mmo was (I seriously had to explain it to him).

Another friend who didn't purchase the game (for reasons you'll soon see) kept saying "damn they need to release this on xbox soon!" I had to explain to him why that wouldn't be possible. Again, didnt know what an mmo was.

The friend that bought it were severely disappointed. The other is living on in blissful ignorance.

Point is, people buy games based on these trailers. Like I said, it works. In my experience people buy games based on these trailers all the time. They are easily excitable.
