Advice for a displaced AC2 gamer?

Well met gang,

I grew up on AC1, played AC2 from start and have been disappointed by the recent  decision to cancel the game, although i understand.

The MMORPG world is enormous. Im lookin for helpful advice regarding a new Fantasy genre MMORPG that values both solo and group play and has a world as beautiful as AC2, (yes I am shallow and love my eye candy although nothin beats good role play and good friends!)

I dont care much for WoW; am following Vanguard and DDO reviews. EQ2 looks interesting but i saw it flamed on some other posts. I dont care to PVP much so Guild Wars was a no go from advice of a friend.

Thanks in advance for any advice! image Sam.

Other than returning to AC1 (though with Turbine now demonstrating a willingness to push an expansion in the market and then pull the support for that expansion not even two months later, I'm not sure how much faith I'd put in them), not sure where to steer you. In the same boat, though not because of AC2 (sorry, just couldn't get into it originally).

EQ2 is undergoing a "it's not a combat upgrade, it's just a what-word-can-we-use-that-isn't-upgrade-since-we-pissed-people-off-in-SWG-with-a-CU"... undergoing lots of changes right now and can only be described as being "in a big state of flux". I'd wait until the Desert of Flames expansion comes out to get into it. Right now it's soloable, or groupable. Community seems to be slowly reviving, though it's still small on several servers even on the weekend. PvP isn't "worldwide", it'll be arena-based once Desert of Flames comes out.

WoW. Ick. Glazed waxy graphics, static gameworld (think the exact opposite of AC1's very dynamic world events). World's most juvenile community, in huge concentrations.

Try Horizons, believe it or not, it isn't quite the same as it was when it was released, and that's a very positive thing. It has a great crafting system (if you're into crafting) with a great range of individuality in the equipment (a crafter can tinker with the "look" of an item, too, furthering the differentiation).

Other than that, wait for what's coming. If any of the "pending ones" ever actually get around to release.

If you like fantasy and stuff you should try WOW FFXI Lineage 2 and there are other games. FFXI is one of my favorites but you might find problems playing the game and some.

If you would of asked me that a week ago, I would of said that you were SOL. But other than the obvious "go back to AC1", Id reccomend playing IRTH online Beta. It has a very interesting FFA pvp system. There are 4 races and 3 of which can pvp while one of those races are basically the shopkeepers/moneymakers/non pvp race. Game has a very interesting setup. Id definitely reccomend that.

Hopefully IRTH or AC1 catches your attention or at least long enough to play something better.

For what you are looking for EQ2 is the best game for you.  And you can try it for free as well.
  • nomadiannomadian Member Posts: 3,490

Theres quite a few free trials around. I think it could be worth trying the eq2 trial. And WoW even though you don't think its the game you are looking you'll be surprised how good it is, theres a few buddy keys around to try the game for 10 days.

SoR is certainly pretty and big, and the world is very interactive. Like with SWG, however, I never found the fun part. I did giggle a bit when that wee critter peed on my leg, although it wasn't enough to keep me subscribed.

Definitely try Saga of Ryzom :)
Someone up there said Lineage2 but I wouldn't go with that if you don't like PvP.

SoR has beautiful environment graphics, very addictive crafting system and a small but awesome community. (I doubt AC2 community was all that big so I'm sure you'll adjust fine.) The theme of the game is a unique Fantasy-Scifi hybrid which is a nice diversion from most other MMOs. ^.^

    MMO Fav List:
    Lineage 2 | 5x Silver Ranger, 7x Shillien Elder <- Active
    WoW | 6x Rogue, 1x Priest
    Anarchy Online | 8x MetaPhysicist
Saga of Ryzom | Matis Light Armourer

Waiting for: Age of Conan, Lineage 3

Ahh so good to find a fun community to bounce things off of, ( emote: wonders what the heck he was doin last 5 years without such a wealth of knowledge!)

I am tryin EQ!! for free now. I can tell already that the combat system will disappoint me but I plan to stick out the week. So far it is so wooden and does not seem to demand much from me. Lookin to try SoR next week.

    Much thanks all, Sam.image

You just summed up EQ2 perfectly :)

I'd reccommend EVE or SOR as well.

Avoid any game made by Sony Online Entertainment. This comes from my personal experience dealing with that garbage company.

I love Everquest 2, they are doing a good job with it. I just think ppl are bashing it because they had a pretty bad period. But now its great, and the ppl that bash it have not seen the new stuff. Its a "evil circle" and they all love to have someone to hate.
Also SOE has different departments, so putting them all under one light is not fair IMO.

I suggest you try the free trail and make up your own mind instead of listening to what others think. We are all individuals and have different taste after all.... The community is great, and I think you will be surprised. Get the Desert of Flames when it comes out. ::::28::

yeah SOE has made some serious improvements in EQ2 like new dungeons that are just like the crap you have been in. The game is stale and boring after lvl 20 and SOE knows this and that's why they are bringing in a combat upgrade to try and milk eq2 as long as they can since it is a failure.

As an ex EQ1 AC2 & WoW player, I'd recommend Saga of Ryzom too.

EQ2 is far from a failure, while its not as popular as EQ was its still numbers wise a resounding success. Before you go around spouting off something is a failure you might want to get an understanding of economics and some actual facts.

Now as far as the OP is concerned. At this point I suggest trials for you. Honestly there is little reason to buy a game that is already out without trying it out first. They have been suggested already but I will reinforce a few.

EQ2, eyecandy galore..If you have a Good machine. I enjoyed the game but I ended up leaving a while back after I hit 50 raided everything in the game to the point of I just got sick of killing the same PVE content over and over. However a ton has been added since I left, I doubt I will go back as EQ2 was not my style, I simply am becoming less of a PVE gamer again and more PVP oriented.

Horizon's, My wife recently picked up the trial. I have to honestly admit its pretty nice looking and she enjoyed it a good deal. I am a bit disappointed in some of the lag issues it has but it overall seems worth trying.

Eve, while you seem to be more interested in sword sorcery I would give the 14day trial a spin anyhow. I think you might find the gameplay very compelling.

Ok I think we get the point Swift, you HATE SoE like your life depends on it.  You are a nutcase man LOL.  Some people take things way to serious, these are games not your life.  You play a game like it, get bored of it and move on.  But some people play games, become addicted and rabid, then totally wacko about a game when they feel hurt by the creators of a game or company.

First step of recovery from this sick insanity is forgiving SoE for killling whatever joy you had in your life.  After that, you can take it one step at a time.

Also please stop preaching to us everytime how evil SoE is , because hearing it for 100000th time gets old ya hear! image

What's the matter pumpkin, don't like to have your God almighty company crapped on? If I need to know what the sweat off SOE's scrotum sack tastes like I'll be sure to ask Barry Manilow. I'm fairly sure he would know.
