As boring, stale and far from the original design WOW has (Yes, the new dev team are apparently all hardcore, helmet-wearing, slobbering retards.) went it's still "better" (or at least, not offensively inept) than the competition.
The only other game out now that can justify it's hard drive space consumed in the days of 2 Terabyte drives is EQ2.
I mean really, why? There are so many options out there, a lot that are free to play or cost the same sub. What is it about WoW that just keeps dragging myself and million sof others back to it? Is it the digital form of crack or something?
nostalgia
Agreed... that and the "iche". "Just one more month! I'll [insert lingering desire here]! o_O" Also, the idea that nothing more appealing to a former WoW player is released yet... I'm looking forward to GW2, but I still have that urge to get the WoW iche out of my system while I'm not playing in GW2's BWEs.
...Hello, my name is Daniel. I'm a WoW adict. I've been clean for almost six months!
Lack of quality in other mmorpgs but this year 2012 looks good so far TERA, GW 2 and TSW gonna change things for sure. TERA is the first mmorpg in years that is exiciting even after 2 weeks which none of the wow killers before were.
Once they kiiled Open World PvP and dumbed down the whole game I stopped playing it and went back a few times for only a few hours. The current game isn't playable for me but if they still had Vanilla WOW I would play the hell out of it.
Most of the people who post on mmorpg.com have good or excellent computers. Many of the people who play WOW have poor computers, so it is either Wow or a browser face book game. Becaue you can play wow with a calculator it makes the game play smoother, the cartoon graphics make the animations brighter-whooo, yipee the teens love that. A lot of hubby and wives started with WOw and it is like a marriage counselor for them and finally WOW is brilliant Marketers, they really know how to sell a game
Better than half of all gamers in the MMO audience played WoW as their first MMO.
Now listen to slobbery old vets talking about our first MMOs, and how many trips we take back seeking the magic lost from bygone days.... WoW will be a powerful magnet for many, many years.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Like many have said, the nostalgia + friends and community around them. I used to go back to WoW because I always missed a lot of the people I played WoW with, and because we played continuously so long initially, we formed bonds. Also, I have so great memories basically from the 2 first years of the game.
The same thing happened to me when I went to alliance from horde, I had the same feeling like in most mainstream mmo's, I missed my friends on the other side and the memories attached to that side, alliance felt alien and lonely. So after a month or two I went back to horde and it felt like going back from some other generic mmorpg. This happened inside the game we are talking about, the same thing basically.
I'm out of the loop now and have been for a long time but back in the day I was part of the "we" you are talking about and I really dont feel it has so much to do with the game, as it has with the people back in there, and the good memories, and other similar stuff. For me at least.
Only way to get around this is to make actually new, fresh, and different game so that people stay for the game in the new one, and not go back to the old one for the above mentioned reasons.
There's too much "new" games that only has new name and new skin, games that are afraid to offer you different or unique core features.
Thankfully we are starting to see a trend where new games are pushing towards change, be it combat, questing, or some other features, there's actual all around fresh stuff incoming soon, for the first time since WoW launched and not these "we have this one different feature that is going to change the mmo space forever!".
Why did I come back? Partially nostalgia and partly because WOW is the only mmo that really LOOKS like a fantasy world. The outland sky still gives me shivers of delight just looking at it. Rockholm (?) has some amazing graphics. I like the simple mechanics, I like the lore, I like the humor, I like the scenery, I like being a real shape-changer (druid). I like so much about WOW. For six years I was addicted to that game. It is hard to kick a habit
But, all that said, as soon as my newest sub (I quit just after CATA and just re-subbed last month) is up I will leave. The talent changes in Cata are what finally drove me away and now that I see the infantile changes to the talents in MOP I don't see any need to get my remaining 80's to level 85.
Warcraft is for people like me. I have very slow reaction times in most games. Any other game where it takes me being aware of my surroundings, I suck. My most standards, I am the person that you wouldn't want in your raid.
In Warcraft, I am a stud player. I literally rock. I don't need to be fast, aware, or particularly good, to be top dps or heals in Warcraft. There are tons upon TONS of players in Warcraft that are even worse than I am at gaming!
That makes me feel good, and keeps me coming back for more.
Ditto. This is also the reason that I know that I will not stay with Guild Wars 2. I REALLY like what I see in that game but I can see already, from the BWE, that it is for more skillful players than what I am.
I mean really, why? There are so many options out there, a lot that are free to play or cost the same sub. What is it about WoW that just keeps dragging myself and million sof others back to it? Is it the digital form of crack or something?
I know this isnt the case for everybody, but i think the reason why alot of people go back to wow is because it was their first mmo. and your first experience in a MMO is allways the most fun you will probably ever have in a mmo, and the hardest to let go. plus almost every new game is trying so hard to copy wow that i think alot of players feel like why play this game when i can just play wow? its damn near the same game anyways.
personally i played wow for a few months when it first came out and hated it, my first MMO was Asherons Call and I have gone back to that game many times, that style of MMO is what i love so its even harder for sombody like me to find a good MMO to play when they all seem to try and copy wow, when that style of game i cant stand.
My first mmo was EQ. Played a week and quit. Never went back. I tried other games before WOW and settled on Lineage 2. I stayed there for three months then WOW came out . I went to WOW and never looked back. It was my favorite game for 6 years (tried AOC, Aion, WH, etc.) and then Cata killed it for me. Yet, I came back for a month to WOW but when the month is over - away again.
Because we've been playing it forever and have some fond memories and have accumulated all this stuff, and to me the most important reason, the game just works.
I quit, sold my account as I told myself that i would never go back over a year ago. Now I have recently bought the game and all expansions and am levelling all over again.
Why?
Because every MMO I have tried since has been quite disappointing one way or another with SWTOR being the biggest.

Nope

Quite a few replies along this line, so I just quoted the first one that said pretty much what I wanted to say.
I will play WoW when Blizzard implements an offical legacy server. I'd play WoW 1.x all over again.
we keep coming back cause it is better than the games out there now.

Not knocking the Game, I just can't play it. It puts me to sleep after 15 min.

I actually stopped a couple of months after WotLK.
I never went back and have no intention. It was fun for a long time and it served it purpose for entertainment.
I think I got burned out on the fantasy theme for an MMO.
I went over to Eve and F2P DCUO.
It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.

Actually you nailed it right on the head, it has become a SUPER CHATROOM and that is where most peoples friends are
speak for yourself.
It might be rewarding, but it is way too grindy.
P.S. I am one of the guys that keep going back
