First why are people naming games that are making a ton of money aka SWTOR, just because you dislike it does not mean it failed, I love people who say this.
Xsyon is another, its making money otherwise he would of been offline ages ago.. He may not have made millions but he doesnt care nor would I, he wanted to make a game that he liked, and is doing so, I give him respect for trying something like an MMO which is the hardest game to make with a tiny team which is also not easy... Gamers aka people make me laugh
My list this list fails badly...
AAA's
1. SWG and
Shadowbane
Indie's
Dawntide had a chance and Earthrise sadly neither company care enough to do them right more indies made by people who have great ideas which is common, but do not have any buisness sense at all, or enough experince when making a game of that scale..
PS:
AC2 was trash AC1 is still one of the best game ever made, turbine was not bright making a ac2 when they had ac1!!! doing well.. Bad buisness !
The 5 I thought had potential during development were
4. Warhammer Online (The original version that was being developed by Climax which was suppose to be a bloody dark version of Warhammer)
Agreed. I still remember the old screenshots in a swamp full of swamp trolls. It's a shame that game got canned. I was horrified when Mythic picked up the IP ... what a bad mistake that was.
If I had to throw a game on this list it would probably be:
Ultima Worlds Online (UO2): Unknown how this game would have been. Most likely mixing elements of UO and EQ together, it could have been interesting ... or horrible. But UO was such a great game that I was always saddened this never came to pass.
I echo Shadowbane and AC2; the latter for the terrific music the players engaged in which drew me in passing, regardless of where I was otherwise heading at the time.
The Matrix Online could have been the perfect MMO.
^
I'm astonished with what they came up with and what a massive missed opportunity it turned out to be. I wanted so much to be a part of the team to design this MMORPG and write for it. Alas, it was before my time.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
Chronicles of Spellborn had so much going for it... I despair that more people didn't try it and enjoy it. It had that tingly magic feeling that so few MMOs ever get, and the house system was fabulous.
Sigh. I would have played that game for so much longer had it continued to develop, and had more players joined in.
I would take swg back if they came up with a better movement system and updated graphics. SwTOR might be star wars but its reminds me way to much of the nge.
The Matrix Online could have been the perfect MMO.

Agreed. The Matrix should have been THE MMO. I mean, in the movies they were essentially logging into a virtual world and becoming whatever the hell they wanted.
They need a do-over.
Seems like this and Shadowrun should have been can't miss MMO titles.
Looks like something I paint. This sounds like it could be a phenominal game if it releases and works. Dark and light would deffinetly make my list of dead game that had the potential to be something, and it looks like someone is actually making it something.
NCSoft just shut down the game out of Rage and Anger due to the lawsuit with Richard Garriott and the amount of their money he waisted on expensive "private" parties. Not to mention that he tried to trick them into paying his space endavour lol.
I am suprised Vanguard isn't on the list, had so much potential the vast scope of the game and vision. If it had only been finished who knows where it would be now? It's still a good game today but no one wants to go back to an old game.. I'd like to see how they do free to play though
my thoughts exactly
Except Vanguard is still going thus not dead so how could it make the list ?
Anywhoo matrix was let down by its absolute atrocious combat system I have no doubt it would have been massively more popular with a more traditinal style than that pants lock on rubbish it had, I still played it for a few month as the setting, customisation etc was awesome but not awesome enough to get past THAT combat system.
SWG for me I cant see why it and TOR couldnt have co-existed and I would love to see it back.
TR at first glance was nice. Cloning was also usable feature. Was fast paced. Not sure what was exactly wrong however with game, but was first one where I have not used not even 1 week out of 1 month of gameplay. Lost completely any interest and fun after aprox this 1 week. Soon after my purchase, maybe 2 months later, company announced they are closing servers. As SF was very remotely reassembling swtor, which however I play now for months since day 1 and is still fun as day 1. Same with wow and Rift. And here my list end. Enjoyed a lot also War if not for impossible bugs and other problems. Aoc same fate. Later lost wish to continue.
What is important for me is that all my gaming need for next 5 or 10 years guess are covered with this trio: swtor, wow and rift. :-))
I have to agree, Tabula Rasa and The Chronicles of Spellborn i liked very much, but sadly they are no longer, surely they could push all these titles onto a couple of servers and charge a trickle amount lets say free to play, would enjoy the opportunity to play either and/or both again.. Am i being too greedy (come on guys theres got too be a small profit in it, and as they say a little of a lot, is better than a lot of eff-all) ?
For me stargate online was one i saw that by concept, and even some fo the screens that were put out had alot that could have gone well with it. Even the how they werre doing the race was interesting, which gave it a feel atleast by hwo it was placed foth that it could feel like the movie/series. I would like to see it still finished yet the fan-base of stargate is not what it used to be. ANother game that has alot of promise would be cabal (even the cabal 2 if it happens looks great.) , but it has been getting pretty dead overall for a while, and dated kinda.

This forum needs to be renamed MMo-Haters

It'd of been nice to try Matrix Online. There's probably a good private server somewhere. Shame that game died so quickly
I would love to go hunt tengu again. Here fishy!

Shadow's Hand Guild
Open recruitment for

The first vision of STO with player crews would have interesting.
I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.
The Matrix Online could have been the perfect MMO.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

1. Face of Mankind
best mmo ever made.. to bad that the player base is to small for it to be fun =(
Which FF Character Are You?
Except Vanguard is still going thus not dead so how could it make the list ?

1. Warhammer Online - the game that made many innovations showing up only now in new MMO's and ones that still haven't been reproduced.
What did everyone hate about it most at launch?
Earth & Beyond
Auto Assault
Horizons
Classic EQ (yeah, yeah, the game is still running, but the classic game died a decade ago)
Classic SWG

Why are people talking about games like EQ and VG?
You're doing it wrong.
the first warhammer online - the one cancelled in 2003-4 ??
not the crap we got later!

Nice to see Spellborn on the list and very nice to see the 'postivie' comments about it.
/salute from a dev

Auto Assault was a fun little MMO. I would play that again.
Earth & Beyond: was very fun to play actually, specially in groups with ships locking together...
