I know this is a little late... beta question!

Ok maybe I'm out of the loop... but does anyone have any information as to why Blizzard limited the Beta to only the first Act?... I would think they would want people to Beta test the rest of the content... anyone see this as a possible problem come release and people start doing untested content?

well right... there was internal testing... but... that doesn't really count... public testing is ALWAYS better for finding bugs and exploits

cause they didnt want players to complete D3 before its release day....

They responded to this with the fact that right after the Skeleton King there is a very large story element/plot twist/etc that they didn't want spoiled.  They also limited the game files to this so that the data could not be datamined.  They went to great lengths to keep this under wraps until it launched.

The public beta was to test server load, stress, general game systems, etc. while their internal content testing team did the rest.

The Beta we had access to was to show what the game was about really. What type of mechanics it had and gave us a chance just to suck up a tiny bit of Diablo's story. I wouldn't want to Beta this game all the way through as a consumer. Since much of the game itself is tied to it's story seeing everything before it's even "official" would riuin some of the charm.

With that said I'm sure there was plenty of internal testing and testing by those with closed access. Of course we really can't say what type of testing has or hasn't been done in the long run, but these are common practices when it comes to beta'ing games..

PM before you report at least or you could just block.

I just think its so odd that this beta was so restricting....

It certainly did a good job of building anticipation though... I havn't been this excited for a game in a long time :-X

A bit different also in that this game is built on numerous difficulties.  So beating the game on the first may only take someone 20-25 hours.  If they extended the testing it would show the entire game, the story, etc. and really deflate the anticipation.  Since there are 3 more difficulties and the actual end game which repeat the story it would be hard to go too much further.  Obviously after the Skeleton King we find out what is up with the blue meteor and the story launches off.

What is funny to me though is the amount of testers who played this for months, me included, and who spent upwards of 75-100 hours in the limited beta and kept coming back for more over other games even knowing their char was going to be wiped.  They have a special formula I think.

^_^! thanks for all the information!...

I just never read anything on why the Beta was the way it was... This all makes perfect sense though!

It's a good question though, and there is definitely stuff that isn't tested by a mass amount of people.  There could be a problem or two for sure.  I will take it though over having it all spoiled too early.
