Bloom effect?!?

anarchyartanarchyart Member Posts: 5,378

Anyone know what the heck bloom effect is supposed to be? For some reason I had this option on, and I thought my graphics were great.

Anyways, when playing tonight, I decided to tweak my graphics a bit. I finally got them just right as far as gamma and contrast so that everything looks right. I turned off bloom effect and everything looks WAY better! And that is a heavy understatement.

Suddenly everything is smoothed out and the lighting looks perfect, and everything is bump mapped and the shadows went perfect. The graphics are to drool for now, everything is shiny and perfectly bump mapped, I have to say there are lots of graphical glitches but they aren't usually present just the odd moment. The n00by quest lady Thella or whatever, her face is all wrinkled with bump mapping and it looks so amazing, her eyes are even shiny when you look at them at the right angle. The mayor of Mos Eisley is one of those creatures like Greedo, anyways his eyes are shiny and reflect the room around him, looks phenomenal.

No idea what bloom effect is ideally supposed to do, but on my system it made things worse.

Here's a couple of screenshots, they are bitmaps so forgive the heavy download time, but Jpegs suck and I wanted to be able to show a bit of the detail. In the first one, they R2 unit is shiny on his dome and you can actually see the reflection of the room around him, looks amazing when his dome rotates. In the second one you can see the bump mapping on every part of the 2 guys in the foreground, its freakin sweet!

"Bloom is an effect light has on film where light appears to blur in around the edges when you have a dark object in front of a light background". Bloom effects in games tend to mimic that effect, when camera is overexposured to light.

Bloom enabled/disabled screenshots in Unreal: http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/Bloom/Screenshots

In SWG, you can check the Bloom effect in Deeja Peak's waterfall or Theed's waterfall and see the difference.

Bloom is a waste of resources. You're better off turning it off and turning on 4x Anti-Aliasing on your video card settings (out of game).

This is exactly what I did, and the difference is truly staggering! The graphics now rival any game out there even EQ2, save the annoying graphical glitches that come up from time to time. The graphics rewl now, bloom literally sucks.

And thanks deggilator, gonna peruse those screens right now. image

Ah believe I posted something to that affect over a month ago, as did Jodokai... we got naysayed and poo-pooed saying we didn't know what we were talking about.

Trust us... neither of us are 'fanboi's' and, as you can see, I don't even play anymore. But if you tweak the graphics in SWG properly they will run smooth as glass on a decent system and will rival the best that's out there.

I think anyone who poo pood you probably thinks they have a much better system than they actually do. I have a Radeon X800 pro and a single gig stick of dual channel DDR 333 ram, while not the top card on the planet at the moment, it certainly rocks. I have the SWG graphics tweaked to perfection, and they truly kick ass.

You're right El, they really do rival the best that's out there, and along with EQ2, can't really be touched as far as MMOG's.image

Out of curosity, does anyone use bloom?

I think I disabled this during the JTL beta.

I don't know if it's SWG to blame or my graphics card (prolly SWG), but the bloom effect in the game is way too bright and hurts my eyes. So I've turned it off.

On the other hand, I have it enabled on EQ2 and love it, especially the heat shimmering effect.

Can you post some screenshot(s) with & without bloom? (exact same scene & angle if possible). I dont play SWG but its always fun to tweak around with graphic settings & see what is worth the perfomance hit.

I will tomorrow image Its so wierd, with bloom on it goes all grainy, it doesn't even do what bloom is supposed to which gives the glowy effect. Turn it off and everything goes smoothe with bump mapping. I think it's messed on my system or something.
