According to NCSoft, they want to avoid a September and October release because of how poorly Aion did. They also don't want a mid summer release because less people play during the summer. I highly doubt a November, December release because it's just too long from when the pre-purchases started on April 10th. So realistically that leaves us with June, maybe early July.
It'll be a bit over month after Diablo III and almost 2 months after TERA releases. It'll also give ANet some breathing room because I highly doubt that Blizzard will release WoW's Mists of Pandaria in June, a month after the huge Diablo III launch. TSW is being launched on June 19th but I highly doubt that TSW is any serious competition for GW2. I know it sounds arrogant but from what I've gathered, due to the lack of any real marketing campaign on Funcom's part, most people don't even know what TSW is.
Lastly, this may mean nothing but apparently new pre-purchase reciepts from Gamestop say that the code expires on 06/26.
That's what I was just about to link. I especially liked the chart of various games' prepurchase dates and eventual release dates, including GW1. If GW2 releases after the 2nd week in july, it would become the game with the longest waiting period from prepurchase to release of that list.
The other sources listed cited NCsoft as not wanting to release games in July/August in general nor September/October specifically after Aion's poor performance last fall.
Months ago I guessed the last week of may. Now I guess I'll go with mid June.
Why not ask a few of the Anet staff members that lurk over this forum? Few members here work for Anet. They know who they are. Many of them stop posting here after the Prepurchase I noticed...
Troller no trolling! (Sorry, I was subjected to Dora the Explorer earlier)
2012, late July or early August (sorry, not keen on thinking of a hard date)
Redcap, I know you said no weirdness in the posts, but I have to make a joke about quoting scripture at you. So there it is.
Um.. sure fine, just not sure which bit is the scripture your quoting?
Any of it. The mythology behind the evil goblin monster called Red Cap. You quote scripture from a holy book at him and he loses his power. I assumed that's where you got the game. If not, you should look into it; it's really interesting and weird, even for mythology.
As for the game, the more I think about it, the more I think it is going to be a while longer, maybe mid-Autumn sometime. They might have a couple or three more open weekend events, and then there will be a quiet period, and then the game will release.
Arh I see, The lore I read had redcap as being the goblin kings head assassin, feared by all including the goblin king, you can read scriptures to me, but I don't think it will help.
Oh, he's definitely that. He kills people; it's this whole thing. He dyes his cap with the blood of his victims. Which is gross, when you think about wearing it.
As for the link provided by pacov, I had never considered that, for some reason. I suppose it's just an ignorant oversight on my part. But being that that's the case, that releasing anytime after mid July would give us an abnormally long waiting period, it might be safe to assume they are planning on releasing it sooner. I think there's general consesus that waiting until late autumn or early winter would be too long given previous trends and just not a good idea given how loud the buzz is for teh game at present. I think they realize the sooner they get it out, the better for them. Most people have short attention spans, and you can't keep a lot of people very focused on a single game for long.
Given how well the game mechanics function, I think, and I think most people would agree, the beta weekend event was mostly just a stress test and chance to help optimize the engine for performance, as well as getting out feelers for how to run the gem store (how fast to make exp gains to make getting an xp boost enticing, but not necessary, for example). I doubt they are going to be making too many change to how things actually work, though I would like to see a lot of the chat functions revamped and worked out to not be ridiculous and terrible.
So, ramblings aside, perhaps mid-June is a good guess. They did say there would be another weekend event, and having that anytime after the next couple of weeks might cramp the release schedule. In any case, it won't be soon enough for me.

They are Gona Milk the Game as much as possible! Their will not be a release till December!!!! So December their will be a release of the game.On the upside it will be more polished!! on the downside it will be dated!!

The sooner the better I would prefer, don't mind bugs as long as they keep working to fix them as we play, someone mentioned that there is another beta weekend this weekend coming and then one every two weeks after that, so maybe not such a dry spell till release after all, here's hoping.
One more pre purchase BWE in late may. An "open" beta for anyone who wants to try the game beginning the afternoon of Friday, June 22. End of open beta period on Monday, June 25. Transition to 3 day early access for all pre-orders on Tuesday, June 26. Official release, 12:00 AM Friday, June 29.
Too late for a release in June, game would alreayd had to be gold at this point to be sent to printing for it to meet end of June date. Takes approximatly on average 60d from gold to release unless it's fully digitial which this game is not.
So earliest i could see this releasing is August-September. I'm more leaning toward an october date myself
But with all seriousness I am going to say early July, as a matter of fact I will go with July 4th 2012 (a Wednesday) and the prior weekend being the early access.
I think they are going to shoot for june and at the latest july. I doubt they are going for the record of longest prepurchase rogram in history, and too many prepurchase betas (8) could ruin the game, considering there's a complete wipe.

They aren't going to release November 13th because of COD black ops 2. and anything before november seems too soon.

Here's my reasoning:
It's the last week before the end of the quarter.

an amazing read of realistic expectations for release date http://guildwars2.romank.dk/speculative-release-date-post-bwe/
