That's what I assumed. Always thought of WoW as a 3rd generation MMO.
AC, UO, EQ were 1st gen. DAoC, AO, games like that were 2nd gen. WoW was 3rd gen. Think the 3rd gen lasted quite a while, and we may finally be getting into the 4th gen.
Aye you are correct they even have a wiki on it. If anyone did nto live in those gens of MMO gaming i would say go take a look. History wise for mmo games lol.

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Gen 4 is Holographic.
Photonic avatar, mobs, npcs..
Dirty hands from mining...
Realistic character collision or bump and pass?
Boss battles require the safety off if you want the rare drops.
If you cut it too short you can always nail a piece on the end.
If you cut it too long then what the hell are you gonna do?
Despise the generation we actly are, archeage definetly starts a new generation

Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Oh god yes!
I need to change my lifestyle so I can live longer to see this!
Women are so lucky, living longer how dare they!
WoW is early second generation(2002) mmo(old warcraft engine with simplistic gameplay) released in thrid generation era.
3rd generation
Sadly they forgot to bring the combat to 3rd generation. Compared to Tera and GW2 this looks so very boring

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Holy crap you're right. What the heck is with the little ding and the lightbulb over the mobs heads anyhow? They suddenly get an idea?
Wow, that combat made mining in Eve look exciting.
Oderint, dum metuant.
Also, calling content creation/world changing to be 3rd generation is just a marketing ploy, as Sandboxes have been around since UO.
IMO second generation is WoW and those that tried to mimic the experience with twists and gimmicks.
Third generation are games that focus on improving the core gameplay mechanics (FINALLY), such as GW2 with Dynamic Events, TSW with real, non-autopilot quests, and Neverwinter with user created adventures.
All of these titles also include some form of movement with their combat, and include strategic tradeoffs in skill choices.
Yeah, i always considered that basically anything pre EQ2 & WoW is "1st generation" as all those games are pretty unique and different. It's only with EQ2 and WoW that we ushered in a new era of expected polish and "basic requirements".
AoC, Vanguard and WAR were fighting it out to become "the next generation", but all of them ended up being just more of the same formula as EQ2 / WoW - albeit with some upgrades and unique features. So.. no next generation there.
Then came along AION, Rift and TOR and a few other games that no one even remembers now. Again, they were going to be "next generation", but really were more of the same.
With the games coming out now - TSW, GW2, TERA - personally, while i'm looking forward to playing at least two of them (TSW and maybe GW2) i hardly expect them to be "game-changing" in a way that would signal a whole new generation of gaming.
IMO, the 3rd generation of MMOs is yet to arrive. And it's not going to get here this year or next. At the moment, the only game with any glimmer of hope is WoD, and that's only because we know virtually nothing about it and make the assumption (!) that a great developer will make a world-changing MMO.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I mean, WoW was a real generation creating game, but paradoxically it was not innovative in the traditional sense. I wasn't even that interested in the game when it originally came out, got it because there was basically nothing else out at the time, and immediately found myself able to do stuff and find fun without trying.
Second generation is about making content accessible, as opposed to the first generation's feeling of "You work for your fun!"
Third generation will be about enjoy what you're doing at all times. Which is decidedly different than the second generation's feeling of "If we give you something to do, you'll do it for the carrot!"
And just as there are people who complain about the move from the first to second generation ("everything is handed to you! There's not challenge"), there will be people who complain about the move from second to third generation ("Where's the end game? Where's the progression?").
Don't let companies make the claim to next gereration or not. Let history demostrate it.

Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"
1st gen = graphical games, 2nd gen is themepark and now 3rd gen is sandbox? Get real here, is that their sales pitch? They're going to have to come up with something better than that. This game makes LOTRO combat look like something spectacular and dynamic. The graphics look good, but it all looks soooo boring. Player generated content, the good: the players CAN generate content, the bad: the players HAVE TO generate content or be bored to pieces.
I don't believe that much into generations and revolutions. I believe in evolutions. Each game can be a generation on it's own.
But the way these guys present their game as 3rd generation (and so superior) while still respecting the so called previous generations is admirable. They don't have the arrogance to believe their game is best period. They have the courage and respect to say that it's all based on previous games.
Hate to burst everyone bubble but none of the listed games (not even arch age since that wasnt on the list) will be groundbreaking or game changers.
TSW has sandbox classes, which has been done before numerous times, has a very unique IP attempt, not fantasy not scifi conspiracy-fiction mabey its called. Its all placed in a themepark however.
TERA has unique combat for mmorpgs, its not tab target, its not quake style fps...its diffrent...all placed inside a mediocre themepark (with one of the worst communities ive seen)
GW2 will be warhammer minus healer. It might do it better but its dynamic events are just...well the same as the last couple games that did them, might be more fun at first because they are new but so were rifts.
Hell i remember the first week of rift the people cheering in caps in chat during dynamic events how totally awesome it was...month later they were all ignored as people got bored with them..if fact they just got annoying after a while.
Arch age is going after crafter-haven sandbox...been done before
The last evolution was back in 2004 when it was decided that EQ+DAOC would be the new standard. Everything from the goundbreaking pvp to the groundbreaking dynamic events to groundbreaking pve was all created prior to that merger of game types. It just geeps getting a new paint job, a new hype slogan and a sold as a revolutionary game.
I like most who played the first generation of mmorpgs like that each one had a unique flavor, feel, system to them all. Now its off a factory assembly line.
But i guess it doesnt matter...most the people who play these games hate RPG's and everything about them.
Just to clarify about "what actly divides" the mmos into generations.
1st Gen- Mmo games that came for players pleasure.
2nd Gen- Graphics, dynamics,Rulles,"But users can only play according to gameplay disigned by the developers".
3rd Gen- Improvement of game contents, users can create theyr own content and gameplay and permanently change the world.
What exactly is a 3rd generation mmorpg can be explained word by word, but i think its not nescessary.
Sandbox old games,or at last those released until this moment may not fall in 'users can only play according to gameplay disigned by the developers' category, but still they have poor dynamics and/or graphics and definetly they dont have improved content
