Honestly, there hasn';t been a decent mmorpg release since world of warcrafts launch, Since WoW came out all the devs have gotten lazy and are just copy and pasting and trying to be world of warcraft insted of doing their own thing. Its pretty much killed the mmorpg genre, since its gotten horrible stagnate, GW2,. tera, tsw, all bascally feel like wow clones entirely. If you go into a mmorpg your playing for the first time and you thuink to yourself "I've played this game before" thats NOT a good thing. TERA for example, all it really has going for is the diffrent combat system, once that gets old the game is just your generic world of warcraft copy with nothing else to fall back on. GW2 will be the same deal, especally with how stupid the devs are, melee attack skills with casts times that stop you from moving during them? thats reallly going to work well in a pvp aspect, especally when the casters have quite a few spells they can cast while running. GW2's questing is also the same as wow you just go to a heart insted of a !, same deal. Combat wise GW2 also looks like nothing special.
TSW looks ok.. the combat looks kinda boring and generic though, another copy and paste wow job, and the freeform skill system kinda has me worried, I don't like the fact that everyone can have every skill, and funcom is pretty fail when it comes to balancing shit. I remember in anarchy online when my fixer had a really nice max level gun, and a lower level martial artist could punch the mob for more than I could shoot it for barehanded.. it just made me go WTF? on the spot.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Good thing there was no MMOs before WoW and every aspect to WoW was 100% unique and original!
It's Funcom. That is practically a 99.99% guarantee this game is going to suck plague-infested gonads for the first year or so because of horrid game design decisions and moronic devs/leads stuffing their thumbs up their arses and fingers in the cookie jar while it all falls apart.
Then finally they'll bring in someone (probably Mr. Morrison), whose finally going to turn the damn thing around to a point where you can call it playable.
It happened with Anarchy Online, it happened with Age of Conan, so it's likely it'll happen here.

Only people who dont know Failcom can be hyped by anything made by this bunch really.

Uhhh..... this is getting old man! The guy who was in charge of development for both Anarchy Online and Age of Conan no longer works for Funcom.... hell he finally got the message that the game industry isn't suited for him, so he is now working outside the gaming industry!
The Secret World has been in development for many many years (long before development on AoC began) and had and still has a completely different person in charge! A person that actually created and launched succesful games before.
They should put that guy incharge of AOC too, for AOC on crom is fast becoming a ghost town. Game bugs are still in the game from launch blah blah blah (Funcom still does nothing after years of people complaining).
I could have been in TSW beta but honestly after the fiasco of AOC i really don't hold much hope for the game so i passed.

Played both of MMORPGs they have done and for a number of eyars.. and you know what they are 2 of the best themepark MMORPGs out there on the market so yeah i know what to expect and im looking forward to it..
I am still not 100% sure it will be for me but im willing to give it a go and i have faith in Funcom to deliver another great game..

I'd argue that Morrison did as much or maybe even more damage to the game than Gaute did when developing.
He slowly removed anything fun from the game. Turned it into a massive gear grind. Introduced the horrid failure that was Shrines of Bori. PvPing by doing PvE grinding... Yes that was a true masterpiece right there. Morrison should stick to Singleplayer games where his hatred for PvP doesn't get in the way of development.
Only people who dont know Failcom can be hyped by anything made by this bunch really.
Or, you know, people could just try the game out and form an opinion from the actual game rather than fight about assumptions.
assumptions built on experience with the same dev are valid, to a point.
I mean... keep a more or less open mind, sure, but to ignore past experiences is to not learn anything. Ofc FC's past launches should be recognised and taken into account. If they prove that pattern wrong this time, fine, I'm ok and happy with that, but at this point I would be a liar if I said my previous experience with the company wasn't killing my hype for this title.
Also if it was a really bad game do you think they would run an open beta weekend and lift the NDA?
Just going to awnser these. You must not have been around for the launch of either of thier other MMO's. Because if you did you would completely understand why people bash Funcom and why they wouldnt trust the limited information people will get this weekend.
I honestlly only played AoC but I was around for both launches and both of them where the same. Overhyped and flat out lies as to what content was in the game. In paticular with AoC. They flat out LIED.
I'm glad you enjoy thier games. But you would have to be blind to not understand why people dont trust Funcom games at release.

Actually i was around for both and beta tested both..
Loved AO from day 1 sure it had server isseus and a few other bugs but it never stopped me having fun when i was in game and that was the main thing.. tho saying that it was a very long time ago lol and i have been very drunk many times since so cant remember 100% all the issues it had.. other than i did ahve fun
As for AOC, beta tested that and yeah i was disappointed that we didnt get what they hyped it up to be but i still pre-ordered. Yes the launch again was not the best but at its core the game was really fun and i played it for about 6 months before i stopped playing MMORPGs for a bit..
they really made a big mistake allowing so many ppl testing for free now ppl see how this game is are going to cancel their preorder lol.
Actually quite many of the current betatesters (except for the ones that just joined) have bought the lifetime-edition, because of their experience with the game. So it's not all bad. Of course there'll always be people not liking a game. Just look at World of Warcraft, tons of people hating it more than anything, still it's the most succesful MMORPG of all time.
the only thing that pisses me off was I got into Beta yesterday and didnt find out till today...as if im supposed to check my email every day or something
fucking failcom..coulda sent me a carrier pigeon with my beta invite or something. I swear im going to every site i know and spam about failcoms lack of communication with their audience. I might even cancel my preorder im so furious at them. Oh, and let me guess, you fanboi's are going to say its my fault. Well..I counter this: Carrier pigeons are one of the oldest forms of communication on the planet and I demand now...a bird fly up to me with my beta invite, crap on my head and fly off
There are carrier pigeons in GW2.

Edited cause I probably broke some NDA rule, blah blah.
Long story short, game sucks and I cancelled my preorder.
Le sigh.
Thanks for letting us know.
Enjoy whatever new MMO you end up playing instead.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but personally I have a hard time lending credibility to that of a person that didn't even know that there was an NDA or when beta starts.

I had the opposite reaction of the OP. I tried the beta months ago and pre-ordered. The game isn't going to be for everyone but I enjoyed it. The graphics, atmosphere and setting are like no other MMO made that I can think of. If you are into that sort of thing you will enjoy it.
It's Funcom, I expect a rocky launch with unfinished systems. I wouldn't even be surprised if we saw another release date push. What I can say is this, I beta'd both AoC and TSW six months before their release and TSW was WAY more stable and optomized.
they really made a big mistake allowing so many ppl testing for free now ppl see how this game is are going to cancel their preorder lol.

Yep.
Some people will hate it and trash it all over the boards no matter what. All I can say is for the target audience you will be pleasantly suprised by this release.
For the people that would not like it no matter what.. you wont like it.
I really hope it ends up being a surprise and it's a good game. Though I'll be playing GW2, I wouldn't mind having another game that was equally as good to play as well. Gonna wait a few months on it to see what peoples reactions/reviews are first though before deciding.
I would have loved to know his reasons and what his problems with the game were.
That was nice of you to give him your permission. I'm sure that is a load off his mind. Whew.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I dont think anyone is. However I already had low expectations because of Funcom and lack of concrete PvP info but ofcourse this post does not make it better.
I'm pretty excited for the beta this weekend. I played AoC at launch and like everyone else I got bored and quit when there was nothing to do endgame besides trying to scam GM's for tier gear and running around mass ganking lowbies, but other than that the game was pretty awesome to me. I went back and played it for like 2 more months before it went F2P, it was still pretty fun. Just hoping they remember to polish TSW up and add some kind of endgame before release lol.
Funcom knows they can't appeal to everyone like GW2, so they are aiming for a niche.
if you find yourself in this niche, there is no MMO that is going to be more enjoyable for you than this (at least not in this year).
Most MMO companies start with a focus on a kind of gamers, but with time, they try to appeal for a wider and wider audience, this did not happen to this game.
expect a very happy mid-low population.
by the way, investigating missions are a blast of fresh air!

Good to see people judging a game based on their experience from two hours of closed beta testing

For what it's worth, the AOC launch was way, way better than the AO launch...
So if Funcom keeps improving at the same rate, we might actually have a decent launch on this one.
