AC2 Down the Tubes in December-- A similiar fate for AC1?

logangregorlogangregor Member Posts: 1,524

Well as many of you know, Turbine is pulling the plug on Asherons Call 2 in December.

Are any of you nervous the same thing will happen with AC1?

Im curious, what does AC1 have over AC2? More subscribers? Are the servers less expensive to run and thus making it financially plausible while AC2 isnt?

Does Turbine have any games in the works like Mythic (DAOC) does?

I want to play AC1 very badly and it looks like maybe this week it will happen. I really hope AC1 will keep going as there isnt much out worth playing atm.

Opinions Welcome

AC1 isn't shutting down. AC1 has twice the subscribers AC2 does.

Turbine just released a letter saying "AC1 is moving forward." http://ac.turbine.com/?page_id=390

Turbine is developing both Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online. I have to say, I'm not interested in either of the games since I don't really like grouping or twitchy combat, but hopefully one or both will generate some income for the company. Fortunately, it does look like they'll be continuing to update and support AC1, so I won't have to worry about where to go from here. Hero's Journey is the only title on the horizon that appeals to me, and I may just end up maintaining subscriptions to both.

AC1 will not be shutting down for a long long time.

Well it may not be shutting down but this isn't looking good. Srand left last week, and Ibn was suppose to take over that position well today, guess what?? He isn't, and once again, a goodbye post isn't even made on Turbines official forums but a third party site.

    Ibn says goodbye

Way back in early 2003, I had a plan. I had some money saved up and I'd always wanted to try living in Los Angeles. I was going to move to SoCal, whether or not I had a job waiting for me there, and see how things played out.

Then, all my plans changed when I saw the AC1 OCR job listing on Turbine's web site. I quickly applied, and decided that I was willing to sacrifice my dream of living in Los Angeles in favor of a different dream -- working for Turbine on Asheron's Call.

So you can imagine how psyched I was when I was offered the chance to continue working my dream job, IN my dream location.

And, hopefully, you can understand why -- now that I've been living here for nine months -- I've chosen to remain in Los Angeles and bid farewell to Turbine and the Asheron's Call team.

As many of you have read in srand's post, I took over as Live Producer upon her recent departure. The plan was that I would manage the day-to-day operation of the team, while our Lead Designer would continue managing the creative vision of the game. My replacement would operate out of the Westwood studio, where he or she would have the benefit of working directly with Calandryll and the rest of our excellent OCR staff. It's been pretty difficult not answering y'all when you asked what job I was moving to, but we wanted to make it part of an official announcement along with srand's depature. We'd just about finalized the messaging when we got word of the team move.

I can say with total honesty that it's been a real pleasure working with this community for the last two years. Even during the challenging times, when I had to make announcements that I knew would upset you, I've always admired the passion that this community has for the game. As I've said to folks, "What's the last thing that you did for six years straight?" And there are members of this community who have been involved with AC for even longer than that!

I've served this community as best I could, and I wish you all the best for the future. I'll still see some of you in-game (for the record, my main characters are on Leafcull), and I look forward to seeing what the Live Team has in store for us!

    See you in Dereth!

I don't think that post has anything to do with AC1's survival. Rather, it has to do with the fact that Turbine is moving their personnel back to Boston. Alex had ties and goals that were located in Los Angeles, so he opted not to relocate. That's perfectly understandable, but it's a personal decision that has nothing to do with the game. Furthermore, his position was one of public relations, not development. Considering no one from AC2 was laid off, it wouldn't surprise me to see someone from that team shifted over to AC1 to fill that void.

I agree, but all Core people with exception of Scenario is left. Not even sure who the Producer is now lol

And incorrect, his position WAS that, then he replaced Srand recently. Now, he is not taking position at all.

Before I left, the team worked out a solid plan for the future: Alex “Ibn” Beckers was replacing me as Producer (yes, that’s why he was leaving the OCR position)

AC1 wont be goin down for a long time as far as I can tell.  There are far more subscribers and it had been worth their time to keep it going.  Turbine is working on LoTR online and D&D online which should keep them going when those go live.  Like the other guy I'm not really interested in those either, but I will always be interested in AC1.

I don't think AC 1 will shut down anytime soon, I think when AC 2 came out a lot of people knew it would not be around long. I played AC 1 for about 4 years and tried AC 2,.. and I can say that I hated AC 2 right from the start. AC 1 was much better than AC 2 and now you are seeing that. They changed the game so much in AC 2, that it just turned people off. I don't think AC 1 will be shut down anytime soon. It will be around for a few more years if anything and I hope, AC last longer than that. It's a fun game and I don't see them bring down the servers.
