Im really confused about it being multiplayer. is it just your own campaign but you can chat with everyone playing and is it persistant like an mmorpg? and whats up with the auction house thing, does it allow you to sell stuff from your game or what
Basically you can do everything by yourself even on online play, but if you like having with other people you can do that too.
D3 is online only for starters because all your character data is stored on the server.
The game is designed around MMORPG technology but the group makeup is 4 players in a game. You can make your on private game and allow no one in, your friends only or open it to the public. There is no trinity (paper, scissors, stone) in the game so even 4 Barbarians can group up and still beat the game (if they are skilled players that is) the more in the group the more the minions of hell increase in HP but is easier because the difficulty scales less than the group makeup.
The goal behind D3 is play through a story line and kill mobs for loot on a progression of different difficulty settings. You play normal beat it then play through in Nightmare mode which is more difficult Then beat NM for hell mode to get to inferno. The loot system is purely random with some very unique loot properties which greatly enhance your build so you can progress through the difficulties easier.
The game is addictive because you’re constantly killing mobs in fast action and getting loot. The carrot is to get the BEST loot in the game which is VERY rare.
The lore behind Diablo is very well written so...
“stay awhile and listen.”

The Diablo games essentially are real-time, action-based, graphical versions of Roguelike games. You make an adventurer and delve into randomly generated dungeons, with randomly generated monsters, with randomly generated loot. As the game progresses you reach increasingly more dangerous areas, with accordingly better loot.
One you reach the story's conclusion and defeat the final challenge, you take that same character to a higher difficulty setting and replay the game. Or you try out a new character and start over.
The gameplay consists of slaughtering hordes of monsters with might and magic, and it's highly fun. It's made extra addictive by the random loot drops. You never know what might drop off an enemy you kill. It's also fun to get new abilities and customizing your character's build to find a playstyle you like, centered around the abilities you like using. All the randomness and customization options ensures a massive amount of replayability.
The multiplayer is also very fun. You can liken it to other cooperative games such as Left 4 Dead's standard play mode, Doom or Quake coop and so on. One guy creates a game and if it's public, up to 3 other players who are at the same part of the game can join you to progress further along. It's important to note that despite the game being listed on mmorpg.com, it's really nothing like an MMORPG at all. It's a hack & slash RPG with single player and 4-player cooperative mode.
They're adding some arena-style PvP game modes later, as well.
Everytime i start to get excited about this game and feel i should preorder it i stumble upon someone saying it sucks, not to play it i should wate for tochlight 2 ect.. Im still on the fence about it, trying to research it more. Thanks for the info everyone really helped
Since you never played 1 or 2 you don't have these preconceived notions (from the 90's no less) about what this game should be.
Make no mistake, Diablo 3 is a great game in it's own right. Those that cannot let go of the past may not be able to enjoy it, but many others will find countless hours of entertainment from it.

Might want to make sure your mouse is in working order because you will definitely be getting a few million clicks out of it with this game :0
Its the most simplistic gameplay with just point and click but its advanced in its diversity. Its just pure awesome fun of point and click and kill.

Ohh nice video. Back then they said there were somewhere around 2.8 trillion builds in the end.
So much for dumbing down the game as people keep saying.
Don't matter what they say at the end only a handful of build will be good enough to rip everything apart.
Like I said only a handful of build will be good enought. The game is coming out in 8days if there is not problem at launch people will be high lvl in 2days so come back and prove me wrong in 10days.
It is actually the other way around.
YOU must prove them wrong. THEY have an assumption (the game builds are many, varied and many will be useful in the end) backed by devs interviews, videos and stuff. YOU have a counter assumption (there will be just a few valid builds in the end) backed by nothing.
So it is YOUR responsability to bring evidence to support your assumption, if not.... well then your opinion is quite worthless. Oh you can still have it, but it is like having an opinion that the Sun rotates around the Earth and not viceversa.

Diablo 1 killed one mouse for me and almost did in a second one as well.
