World PvP and the reason why you enhoy it.

I understand that people like world PvP because it adds a sense of danger to an uninspring world.  What these people really need to understand is they "need" this sense of excitement to get through a boring world and boring "kill 10 rat" quest system.  I would wager that half thsoe guys you poll who say they love World PvP are actually saying it because they hate the game.  Put the player in a world rich with lore and entertaining quests and the need to have world PvP goes away.  Thats my 2 cents.

I love world pvp..when it's done correctly. Wow world pvp is an example of how not to do it. The world itself needs to be crafted with it in mind and few if any get this right. GW2 got it right for their game by making it a massive instance. Themeparks would do well by this model.

world pvp is great because it's spontaneous, unpredictable, often unfair, random, opportunistic.....it's always fresh and always a very unique experience. there are almost never two world pvp events that begin, mature and end in exactly the same way.

this is why people enjoy world pvp. it is not a script you must follow, it's a script you write.

Not if they want true open world PvP.  What GW2 did was turn it into a gigantic battleground with objectives.  There is no sense of danger out in the open world because the PvP is completely separate from the PvE.  I don't like compartmentalizing parts of the game like this.

If you are going to have open world PvP, at least on PvP servers, then have it.  Just put rules in place that discourage widespread ganking and griefing.

Your 2 cents are wrong.  Back in Vanilla WoW, world PvP was a blast, and the world and gameplay was the best of its time.  It's very possible to have both a great game and solid, fun, open world PvP.  Just not many games get it right.  And none recently.

this is most likey only because UO was your first full loot, ffa, pvp sanbox.....there is notthing like your first. ever.

for someone that had DF as their first full loot, ffa, pvp sandbox, their best memories will most certanly come from it. if they were to go and play UO they would probably think it's a piece of ancient crap....

.....it's all a matter of prospective, and "best" is only universally subjective.

i have high hopes for arche age ..but im not holding my breath on that one either

What is the difference between open world pvp and gigantic battleground? Not much i would say. What if the battleground is almost the same size as your world?

You can still level up in battlegrounds by doing objectives, with the addition of random pvp encounters. So its not entirely separate between pvp and pve.

Say what you will for completely missing the point.

If the game is great (i.e. not good) and the immersion is terrific then there is no need for world PvP and players would still flock to the game even the players who say I love world PvP.  Basically what I am saying is World PvP is a copout for bad worlds and even worse questing systems.

It gives you an adrenaline rush like no PvE game can. When you can be attacked at any time you have to be a lot more mindful of your surroundings and who's around at all times. No PvE game can match this level of excitement by a long shot.

I think it is you that is missing the point. In most PvP games the PvP IS the content. From random encounters to territorial control to huge 500+ player battles. A good PvP centric MMO has all of these. As for questing systems... That is what PvE games do best because it's all they have for content 90% of the time... That and raiding endlessly to grind for gear.

Edit: Oh and games like Lineage II, Aion and even EVE Online have absolutely huge beautifully rendered worlds. Many other PvP games do as well so you're way off base with that claim as well. Why did you even ask this question when it's very obvious you've already made up your mind to hate open world PvP? You even seem to want to make crap up to back up your hatred for it. image

World pvp is great because you don't know what is going to happen, or when.  The added risk and challenge makes the game so much more enjoyable.  Especially compared to AI that isn't very bright, and is generally set on easy so everyone can complete it without much effort.  Hell, it makes the simple act of walking from one town to the next more exciting even, never knowing what's out there waiting for you.

Well, I LIKED world PvP back before cookie cutter classes took over the genre. In Asherons Call you had no idea what the person had trained and was going to be able to do to you until its done. In GW2 with the ability to swap out to a wide varitey of possible skills to use it will be close to that type of situation...with some skill sets that might not be able to counter what your opponent is using.

With cookie cutter games, sure the rush hits you at the onset, but once you realize what you are fighting it fades very fast for me because I starting thinking about what I need to do right away, once I see what class is fighting me I run through the list of what he can do really quickly and it becomes automatic...thrill goes away quickly. Takes longer to fade in games where the possibile outcome isnt as predictable.

It comes down to, OMG im being attacked by a ____

in a cookie cutter game a ____ can only do 12345

in GW2 a _____ may be able to do 12334 56789 0-=*! @#$%^ ^&**() and you dont know which until he does something and even then he can switch to something vastly different that you may not be able to counter with your choices...

in Asherons Call anyone could do anything because you were free to train it all with your skill points, so no classes, anyone could have anything trained and you wouldnt know what he could use against you until he actually did it. Made PvP exciting non stop even when there were flavor of the months and a lot of players went with them, you still never knew if that one person was doing it his own way.

Are you asking them why they enjoy world PvP or telling them why they shouldn't ?

There is no entertaining quest or world lore that provides the challenge of a closely fought PvP match.

for me it adds another dimension of realism to a game.  especially in a game with more than one faction.  where part of the lore is we at war with eachother.  it only makes sense that we would be fighting out in the world.  but, mostly because it does add another layer of excitement, intensity, and unpredictability.
