Serious PvPers will always choose Asura.

oxbakeroxbaker Member Posts: 59

I mean, why would they not? If you can't use racial abilities in standard (non-WvW) PvP matches then the only advantage one race gives over another is thier size. All races may have the same hitbox but a physically smaller character will be slightly harder to spot depending on terrain.

Only reason I bring it up is that I worry serious PvP and Esport matches will consist of two teams of Asura which, to me anyway, doesn't seem as visually appealing to watch or play in.

I know it's late in the development to do so but it would be nice if they would make it so the larger your race, the more hit points you have. Not a lot more but just enough to make up for sticking out like a sore thumb in PvP.

What think you?

I think giving larger characters more HP is a stupid idea. Then people would just role Charr & Norn and QQ that the Asura are too squishy, that they are always the targets for focus fire (ctrl+T). Quite frankly I don't see the Asura having that big of an advantage in a tab-target game and only those who suffer from some serious tunnel vision won't be able to spot an Asura with a bigass name-plate. Even in the old poor quality PAX & Gamescom vids, I never had much trouble spotting an Asura. Would be much easier in-game. Or maybe my eyesight is just that amazing. image

I think you missed where I said "not a lot more". They shouldn't be given enough extra so that one race is "squishy" compared to another but just enough to nulify the size advantage. And you may not view that small difference in size as much of an advantage but if you play compeditively then you'll take any advatage you can get, no matter how small.

And when I played, the Charr and Norn most certainly stuck out from the Asura. Even if you can see the name tag as clearly as the next races, there are a certain percentage of players (who knows how many) that focus on the character and not the name tag. And those players are more likely to target the player that is more noticable if all other aspects are equal.

It's those small advantages that compeditive players look for and why they'll chose Asura every time.

As much as serious GW1 PvP players always picked the smallest possible female character?

    Oh wait... they didn't.

I seriously doubt that anyone competant at PvP would have difficulty tabbing to the Asura...

tab goes to the nearset enemy,  not the biggest.

Having someone as a small race in PvP was never about the whole team being small, it was always having one or two clutch players in those small races so that in games without Collision detection you could hide in your mates. Granted you can still hide easier than a larger race, but its unrealistic to think competitive teams will all be roling Asura just to hide behind terrain.

I agree, but it is our brains not our diminutive size that will save Tyria.

No, they won't. Many of their animations let them jump in mid-air, which makes them as visible/noticable as any other race.

IF this would be true then everyones in Wow would have taken gnome and that the race i never see in pvp, lol

The real serious PvPers do not overconcentrate on petty and irrelevant differences such as these.

Asura is almost same size as humans in-game. A little shorter but quite wider.

With that being said, anyone who still doesn't choose Asura is just crazy. They should remove all other races. (They're so cool! I wouldn't mind a world of pure Asura)

Wow is that how hard core pvpers target by tsbbing through 20 moving targets and ppets? That an amazing technique.

What about the sylvari and their built in camouflage?

I will be playing an Asura though, in the hopes that I get overlooked and deemed not an immediate threat.

in wvw due to the zergy nature it won't matter, AOE left and right. in spvp(tournament mode) it will matter even less since if you are hiding you are not defending or attacking a capture point. and killing someone isn't the objective in tournament mode. in hot join due to the already zergy nature of it,it won't matter real much.

also in PvP, tab-targeting is bad thing to do.

    What he said.

There seems to be a bunch of doubters but if Arenanet does an overall good job balancing and GW2 actually does make the Esport scene, you just watch all those little guys running around.

Sure the average PvPer may not care enough to chose those little advantages but those in the tournaments where money and prestigue are at stake sure will. Wait and see... oh yes... you wait and see....

They have no advantage in SPvP , which is where the tournaments will be played. Skilled pvpers won't have a bit of an issue finding the correct target in the correct time, I didn't in Daoc and won't in Gw2.

Hehe some people did the same thing with Lurikeen in DAoC.  I'm not really sure how much of a difference it made though.  Like the OP says, they still have the same hitbox.

The only possible advantage you gain from small stature is that a player may not "notice" you before he would notice a big Charr.  But then again...I think you have a huge name over your head pointing you out so it's not like you're hidden :).

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

  • evianwaterevianwater Member UncommonPosts: 308

I always liked the idea of race mattering. Thought it was great in Shadowbane that larger races had more hp, same with Eq1..

But in the age of "fairness", why not just make the nameplate scale ? So for smaller races like the Asura, they have a larger nameplate to make up for a lack of physical size. And larger races have smalelr nameplates ?

Yep.. or the gnome for WoW. This is brought up EVERY time there is a "small" race in an mmo and I have yet to notice a difference.  I also heard there are chairs that give better postier that gives you .01 second better reaction time.

I would guess for the hard core of the hard core this would make a difference, for 99.99% of us, not a big deal.

So, using the same logic, serious PvPers will only dress in earth tones.

  • ihatepugsihatepugs Member Posts: 61

Don't underestimate the hatred that players have for small characters.  Sometimes they will go to great lengths to have a gnome dead versus a charr just because of this perceived insult.  I remember a friend that told me whenever he saw a short race in any game with PvP, he would head straight for that target first.  He would go out of the way to find ways to kill them.

So you'll have players on both sides of the spectrum, those that will ignore the small guys and those that will hunt for them.
