Whats special about D3?

drakes821drakes821 Member UncommonPosts: 535

So this isn't a bashing thread, I just don't really know anything about Diablo 3 or the Diablo series all together. What makes it so hyped and special? I've read some previews and such but I think it's a better source to hear from other players.

I've played what I think are similair games like Titans Quest an Path of Exile, how does Diablo 3 compare to these?

Titans Quest was okay but I thought it got grindy real fast and the death penalty system (or lack of it) seemed to make everything kind of trivial. Path of Exile I liked a lot more because of the setting, it is very dark and gritty, and also the difficulty seemed to be higher and the combat less MMOish and more action like.

I'm trying to figure out if I should buy it or not so any imput helps.

Hard to express.  At it's core it is a dungeon crawler with satisfying action combat slaying thousands and thousands of enemies, but the most addictive parts of it are the lottery loot system.  It is extremely addictive collecting loot, and extremely satisfying slaying hordes of monsters.

Randomly generated content keeps it fresh because everyone will be repeating content.  It is just a kind of magic formula that really hits home with some people.

I played over 75 hours of the beta which was extremely limited, and was like 1/3rd of the 1st act.  There is just something about it.

It is always online, instant co-op action with the click of a button, and most of all just try it.

Here is the best part for you.  All Battle.net accounts can play it from day one.  It has a built in starter edition so you can download the client, login, and play a limited part of the beginning of the game probably up to level 13 through the first mini boss on all 5 chars.  You can do this and then decide for yourself.

It's a progression based, procedurally generated hack n slash loot grinder with a surprisingly interesting story. If I were to emphasize one thing about the Diablo series in general, it is all about the loot. It has a very strong "gamble-y" effect on you as you play. You are constantly looking for that next great item.

If you like the idea of those things, the game will appeal to you.

at this point in time, with all the great games out, absolutely nothing.

it's catters to a very nostalgic group of older mmo players that played the original Diablo and Diablo 2. i mean Diablo came out in 1996. back then there was no WoW, no CoD, no Everquest, not even Ultima Online or Starcraft. there was nothing.

back then the gaming industry was in it's infancy and Diablo was one of the very first games you could call an mmo, and it became a huge hit at the time. diablo was THE shit.

the graphics have been updated, but the gameplay is still very much reminiscent of the older games, but quite frankly very outdated when compared to the modern 2011 mmos. of course it was ment to be like that, it was ment to resemble the old Diablos. it was ment for the old Diablo fans, not really for the new mmo crowd.

to new players it wont be much different from the free PS3 games like Zombie Apocalypse...except that you have to pay for it.

Diablo 3 is going to be a far more polished product than Titan Quest. But, you either like these games or you don't. They're about the fun gameplay of killing hordes of monsters and the loot that drops (and Diablo III will also have a story to follow).

I see no option to do this through my B.Net account....I guess it will go live tommorrow?

Edit: I am reading that it will actually be day 30 the starter edition goes live.

Can anyone spare a guest pass?

One mistake, Diablo has nothing to do with MMO of any kind!

Yeah they announced this after my post.  I know people had starter edition flagged on their accounts before this though so it is strange.  Maybe those that played in open beta get it?

I am sure there will be guest pass thread after launch to share them.

    Thanks for the replys.

I think I may just take the leep of faith and purchase the game. I've always been hooked on games with loot and the randomly generated levels sound awsome.

How does the combat feel though? Is it mainly click based like Titan Quest or is it more aciton oriented like Path of Exile where you can use abilites without targets and the can miss and such?

Way way more advanced than POE, hundreds of skills, can miss, can do all kinds of crazy stuff.  Game is unbelievably good.

I think the leap in faith will be rewarded although I think it has a different feel to it than D1&2 for many people. The thing that made it stand out for me was it just being undeniably fun. It took until I actually played it in beta to realize that because I didn't like D1&2 and only tried it out of boredom with other games right now. So glad I did.

I forget exactly if it was more like TQ or PoE (played both, but I can't remember the mechanic in D3 exactly). The thing that stood out for me is each attack feels impactful. The sound and feel of the combat was great in the beta, not to mention the effects of every move felt really badass in action. It was just a lot of fun fighting everything and trying different skill setups. I can't wait to play it again image.

While Diable I and diablo II were innovative and fun, D3 is restrictive and tailored to the wow crowd.

D1 allowed you to spawn client copies so by buying one copy your whole house hold could play this was an amazing idea, lan play was also available which was an easy way to counter all the cheating and idiots.

I tried the beta and it was meh at best, instead I pre-ordered a 4 pack of torchlight 2 for my friends (same cost as 1 copy of diablo 3)

Torchlight 2 is a much more open ended and modable game, looking forward to its launch.

Torchlight 2 will be released with or close afterwards a full software development kit, the devs have stated if you can build a dungeon or outside area that can handle 32 players, you can modify the player co-op limit.

It has pets that are actually useful

And no blizzard trying to empty your wallet

I can't argue with that since I've played wow for the past 7 years (recently quit), but I disagree on the fun part. D1&D2 was really boring to me. D3 feels like a great evolution for the series and the genre. I'm not generally an ARPG fan so maybe those changes will upset more veterans, but my interest in the game is purely based on how fun it was to play the beta weekend nonstop to max out everything I could and still play it till the last minute.

Take that as you will, no doubt with opinions ranging from "You didn't play enough to know better" or "You're just a blizz fanboi, gtfo", but fun is all I care about whether I play a game 5 minutes or 5 years and I couldn't care less who made it. I'm really looking forward to playing it tomorrow and other games will have to go on hold for awhile.

    Nothing.

I struggle with this game as well. When I buy games it is usually because I am excited for it. With d3 , I am cautiously excited.

Many here are too young to remember a time when Blizzard was actually 1 of if not the most reputable gaming companies around. Blizz built itself on diablo, starcraft and the warcraft franchises, all very reputable titles. As a companym they were loved by almost everyone until WoW, obviously a very plaraizing title.

D3 makes me hope the old Blizzard isnt dead, but the grownup in me knows better. I see the commercials with the proclaimations "Evil is back" and I cant help but wonder if it is the game they are refering to or the company behind the game.

In the end, I feel the diablo franchise deserves a shot. Thats is what was the deciding factor for me. But, I still cant shake the feeling that I am going to be the straw man standing there with no brain after the curtain is raised.

You're probably right, but I know some of us here still have faith that there are decent, mature gamers that can still have a forum discussion about this without all the asshattery.

I already adressed why I didn't want to just google information and the thread has been bashing free and very helpfull...I fail to see how it would start a flame war.

But anyhow I played it a bit this morning and it is great. The graphics were a tad dissapointing at first but the art style is very nice in game and with all the monsters and effects flashing on the screen it looks pretty good.

I can't wait to play more on my witch doctor later today.
