The struggle between MMO's... Leaving WoW for EQ? Tough choice...(My discussion of both games inside

ExavusExavus Member Posts: 200

Well... FOr my history of MMO's... I played EQ for 4 years or so. Loved the game. But ya know, you can only do so much you'll eventually grow tired of it and move on to other games. I juggled games like DAOC/AO/FFXI around and kept going back to EQ. After all it was my first.. and my favorite.

My friend got WoW and gave me the trial so I checked it out. I fell in love. This game was so much fun. Maybe it's the lack of friends or something that makes me grow tired of things but it didn't last. Levels 1-20 went by so fast I loved it. I must have grew too much to the fast leveling because My character, now at level 29 has been barely clinging to the game. It took me so many hours of grinding from 28-29 it makes me sick. It felt like i was leveling from 50-51 on EQ or something. Even FFXI seemed to be more fun and faster. I hit a wall with my character and i'm not having fun with him anymore.

I've been noticing things about WoW that I love, and that I hate.. (And this is mostly comparing to EQ/FFXI). I feel the items i'm using aren't really worth anything. Most of what i'm wearing i've found. WHich is cool, but its all randomized items. Something about that displeases me. Also - There's not enough grouping. I know there are instances going on but that's it for grouping. From what ive seen there is never any grouping going on beyond instances. Every class can solo just fine, which i feel was a big mistake to bring people together(What are MMO's for anyway? Community!).

I have a close friend playing EQ , he never left when I did. I may go back... I've played so much of the game though that it's hard to make a decision like this. *sigh* WoW is a great game.. They've done so many things right with the game, but just those small things, were the biggest things i enjoyed about other mmo's. And I just miss my home... *shrugs* I dunno.

What are your guys thoughts on all this jibberish?

Current MMO: WoW/GW2

EQ, I quit because of the need for raiding. It's a lot harder to get a group at 70. Sometimes I would have to raid from 7 till sunrise and theres so much sitting around. Yeah, its fun, but I usually don't get much out of it for my hard work. World of Warcraft... I quit because of the same reasons that you did. It's so easy to keep up to level with gear and you can solo through the whole game. End game is raiding(Im looking for something more than raiding for once) and PvP which does not appeal to me much in WoW. Too much ganking and the honor system did not exactly help the game.

Im still playing EQ strong after 4 years. I checked out WOW in beta and stress test and decided to stay away due to how fast you lvl and so much solobility. The one game I did like when EQ gets me stressed or board *officer in a guild*. Is CoH Ill reactivate my account like evey couple of months, love how you can find groups within 1 min no matter what lvl you are. However CoH does get old fast and lack of gear and weopons. Did sign up for the free year of AO cant get into that game. One game I loved but when releaced realized it realy isnt a Mmorpg more of a orpg is Guild Wars. If MxO wasnt so much of a pain during stress would be playing now. Love thier ideas didnt like how game ran. Feal they rushed that one out to fast had alot of bugs in beta the week before release. Now im waiting calmly for my SWG pack I won here always wanted to check that game out but at the time of release was very heavly into EQ and didnt want to try anything new. I also figure since its been out for a few years and they just redid stuff agin it might be runing alitle smother but hey it was owned by Sony *is it still?* and nothing realy smothly at first with them.

Sorry rambling myself you started it Exavus!

You wear items you find in WoW? Why don't you make some money and buy better stuff off the auction house? Sell the green items that you loot or disenchant them and sell the materials from that. Pick up mining and herbalism, make some money. I bought my mount at level 40 and at level 43 I was back up to 100g. On my other character, I bought my Epic mount right as I hit 60, not too hard (And believe me, I hate crafting and most tradeskills, but I did it)

You can pretty much level from 1-20 in like two days of harcore playing. From levels 40-50 I was able to gain 1, sometimes 2 levels per day. 50-60 was like, a level per day.

And your analysis on grouping....you just can't sit around and wait to be introducted to a group. I play a 60 Rogue, 38 Paladin, 38 Warrior, 48 Shaman and 55 Hunter, and I've got in plenty of groups. Not only for instances, I would find people to group with to do non-elite quests or just to kill some mobs with. Also when you grind in WoW, try killing mobs 2-4 levels lower than you, the XP is much faster. Also do all the quests you can for reputation (comes in handy when you get your mount).

I am bored of WoW right now because battlegrounds sucked imo, and so does the honor system. Items are bounded to your character (I hate that BS) and I am tried of doing the same instances. I have never played EQ before, but have played SWG. I think Im gonna try EQ, but I am tired of WoW.

But there is social interaction in WoW and fun people to meet and fun stuff to do. Even though the game wasnt built to encourage that, it shouldnt stop you from doing it at all. Leveling is TOO easy in WoW actually.

I've been playing Wow since when it first came out. And much like everyone else i loved it at first, couldnt stop playing it and such. But now i think its time to move on, im getting bored and i need something that feels more like an mmorpg. In WoW, like you guys said, its too easy to level and there is no point in having groups if you want to level. You only use groups for leveling or going on raids.

So i was looking for a new game to try, and i was strongly considering getting the station pass; so that i can play eq, eq2, planetside and swg. (anything else i dont care about) and it seems like eq is what im looking for but not sure, (planetside just looks bad ass) So in your opinion is it a good idea to leave all my friends and everything i worked on in WoW for those games?

Some things are better left behind on the fact that your leaving your friends. But im sure you will make many more friends on EQ, Planetside, EQ, SWG if you get the station pass. You will also have more variety on what games you can play and what styles of gameplay. I think that you will enjoy the station pass or just EQ more then WoW tho.

I just started WoW. I'm addicted but I know the addiction won't last. I'll prolly switch over to EQ after I'm bored with it. Everquest is fun everytime I play. Graphics are crap but I don't judge games too much over that. EQ is an overall better game than WoW.

As someone who is undergoing the same transition, I will tell you...Don't go back to WoW. Blizzard is not a mmo company, they aren't doing too good at it. People like WoW because it is easy, I played it since Beta 1 and quit it within 2 months of Live after I already had 2 60s and the best gear in the game.

I havn't got any messages back from my post but my advise is if you hafto pick between those two, go back to Everquest. Give me a tell or something and perhaps we can start out together again, that'd be great :-)

I have had WoW sence December and only have a lvl 30. I dont have alot of time to play the game but once I hit 25 I started to take forever to gain lvls. EQ just takes wayyy to long WoW is acceptable and also fun.

After playing EQ for a few years and then switching to WoW a few months ago, I am definitely spoiled. I could not go back to EQ if you paid me. I loved my Necromancer, plain and simple, sitting in the Mill LFG was great. When POK was introduced and old world zones went bye bye, so did I. Long gone are the days of trading in EC, slipping through West Freeport tunnel as a Dark Elf or paying Druids for Ports. The charm that defined EQ has long since died. If they brought back a classic EQ server ala DAOC, I might come back. WoW is stocked with peeps everywhere. It may not be the most challenging game on the market but it is certainly the most fun. I even tried EQ2 again after its initial launch and couldn't stand it past 2 days.

In EQ, the "charm" that made EQ also broke EQ.  People hated the travel times, dying needlessly to guards, endless /auction spam, etc.  They asked for a means to travel, a means to sell, etc and SOE delivered.  Anyhow, EQ is/was a great game.  It defined the majority of the genre's players perception of what needs to be in a MMORPG.  DAOC defined the next episode of development with introduction of a meaningful PvP.  WoW has tried to make turn out the next generation by catering to casuals at the low end (easy solo grind) and hardcores at the high end ("rewarding" pvp and raiding).  Unfortunately nobody has completely matched all the right parts into the "perfect" MMORPG yet.  I feel the time will come though.  The question will be, for me, will the "perfect" mmorpg be released before I no longer have interest in that form of entertainment?

To the OP:  Go play EQ.  Get some cash through grinding a little and go buy some decent gear in the bazaar.  Then go explore the older worlds.  There is never anyone in the zones from old {original} EQ, Kunark, and Velious.  If you want to blaze up to your upper 40's fast, just stay on Luclin in groups or solo.  Old EQ is still fun if you know where to go and don't get wrapped around raid / equipment envy.

I've been doing the same thing...EQ was my first MMO and I loved it...loved as in past tense. I played EQ for 4 months and loved it, then WoW came out and I loved it, but I felt the no grouping thing going on like you did, so I went back to EQ, quit in a month again, then I went to Guild Wars, it wasn't deep enough, then to CoH, too repetitive and long travel times, then bak to EQ today as a matter of fact, quit today, and I went to the store today and bought a WoW game card and now I'm sticking with WoW...it really is the best, EQ has too much of a grind and it feels very outdated, I can find a similar MMO online and play it for free...so WoW is a force to be reckoned with...

Basically it comes down to are you a Next Gen Gamer or Not. DO you want everything handed to you with quests that give rewards as good if not better than dropped loot. Leveling to max level in a month, tons of solo content, no travel times, and the i need to be ubar and i neeeed it now attitude.

If you rather work on your leveling, earn your gear, be able to trade off most of your gear how you want too, actually play an massive multiplayer, then eq is great.

I have tried so many games in the past 3 years to see if there was a new eq, like experience and all of the games could not hold my interests past 3 months.

That and planes of power did kill the charm of eq 1 in a lot of ways. Now days no one has any paitents for travel if it is more than a zone or 2 off of pok most will never go there. Heck alot of the players don't even know what exists past the few zones off of pok. It made the game fell so small. Even on my druid i did not realy use my ports it was much more fun to run from point a to b. And EC rocked you actually had to be ther to sell, and you could haggle so easly for great gear. Now its souless bots people set up with the prices they want, its just not the same.

But the new q is good enough for now till something better comes out hopefully vangaurd can pull it off.
