It just cracks me up that the biggest complaint I see on these forums is the lack of Off-line mode. Really? Here? Where the primary focus here is MMORPGS?
It's like "OMG, I have to be on-line to play D3? No way! Screw you Blizz you greedy bastards! I'm going to go play Rift/Terra/Tor/Eve/Wow/LoTRO/etc. instead...." lol Teh Irony!!

Ummm it's not an MMO....
It's a singleplayer game with online components. I would be pissed too if i can't play a singleplayer game i bought for 60 euro when im going on a trip somewhere, or when my internet is down.
Then people need to STFU about it on here.
They would if they didn't put a sub forum on here for it.
I think you missed the underlying real issue to this which is OMG I have to be on-line to play D3 AND THE ONLINE CLIENT SUCKS. If it had worked from the get go the complaints would have been much lower. And no, I did not miss the irony of this complaint being here.
As someone else said, we get all the woes of an MMO without the benefits.
What do you mean by that? The servers being down? That happens with almost every new MMO also, its very rare for developers to get that right from the get go. That said, Im not sure why anyone would rage about something like that. You will be able to play the game, its not like there is something inherently broken in the game.
Now as far as the general topic the OP is talking about. The underlying problem with a single player game having to be online all the time is that there is no good reason for it for the player. Its as simple as that, it doesn't matter if you post about it in a MMORPG forum or a Action Games forum or any forum for that matter.
Don't look at were the complaints are coming from, just look at the complaints and see if they make sense to you.
It's not an MMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I take the complaint of no offline mode as a sideways way of complaing that they can't steal the product.
I know that, did you read the post?
I highly doubt that. I don't give it long before pirates are able to not only give you a private server to use (As others have said already exists), but have it do a loop-back on your own computer so you can truly play offline. Nothing is safe from pirates. The more elaborate the DRM is, the more that becomes apparent.
Stop missing the OPs point. If you want to complain about no offline mode, do it someplace other than a forum about mmorpgs. You can say it's not an mmo and that it's single player till you are blue in the face, last I checked you didn't decide that. It's as much an mmo as GW1, and it didn't have an offline mode.
There is a D3 forum here, correct?
"Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever." - Noam Chomsky
But there is a good reason for the players...
I don't know about most of you, but one of the things I've noticed different about D3 & D2 is that the lateast itteration seems to be more co-op friendly. Several group features from WOW were ported to D3 (Group chat, linkable items in chat, context menues from player frames, easier grouping mechanics). With that said......if the gear hacking & duping from D2 were allowed to happen in D3...it would KILL co-op play. Connecting to BNet prevents cheats / hacks.
Also, being connected to BNet also allows you to hook up with friends playing WoW or SC2...or vice versa.
Those added benefits may, or may not, make up for the inconvienence of not being able to play when you're in transit somewhere...or your internet goes down....probably depends on your own particular situation. My guess is that Blizzard thought about this and decided the advantages / benefits outweight the potential risks.
With all that said...I still think it stinks, not being able to play without a connection to BNet.....but I also enjoy the benefits, so I have a hard time making too big of a deal about it.
Well said RajCaj
So, its should not have the what happens in almost every MMO happen because it is not an MMO.
I like the game and yes, part of it was the servers being down, the other part are the many, many launcher and connectivity errors. Now, I read the other complaints but am speaking from my personal experience. When I am able to play the game itself, I enjoy it. Sometimes it is fine, sometimes it sits on a grey play button until I end the process, sometimes the launcher is blank. Those are not server issues and it is doing that on two different PCs that are pretty new (less than 4-5 months old and built for gaming) and up to snuff.
Also, I noted that many other posting on the forums are having similar issues, or issues that I have not, thankfully experienced. SO, back to my point. If you want to have people play the solo/ singleplayer game in a persistant online client it needs to work flawlessly or it is a big failure. I would be completely understanding if it was just the co-op or PVP portion that had issues.
EDIT: I agree with RajCAL. I don't "mind" that you have to play online, even for solo play to avoid cheats and hacks (which will happen anyway). I just want the online component (IE Server, and client to connect with) to work well. At least on day one, they did not.
I know there are advantages to getting connected to Bnet, the problem is having to be connected all the time. All you mentioned is great, connect up and you get all of that. Dont connect and you can't play the single player game......the reason for THAT is piracy prevention. But a way too extreme privacy prevention.
Yes.... because no one here does anything besides play MMO's....
Its not an mmo but its arquitecture is similar in nature, its a client-server architecture. Thus, the problems you usually see in an MMO launch apply to it. Besides the fact, that even single player games even for consoles are released with numerous bugs and some that only a certain number of players only run into. The point is, these will be resolved. They are bugs not desing problems.
Ahhh there we go, an intellegent well thought out post with some pretty good points.
I'm glad you laid out such a detailed explanation as to how you came to these conclusions. You've really negated the possibility of any kind of retort with your air tight logic.
I commend you my friend, I commend you.
Can't wait for that new MMO Torchlight 2, I hear they have an offline mode! Talk about innovation.
I am not a traditional complainer, you can check my post history, but why are we (you, others) making excuses for Blizzard on this? MMOs are huge, so I give a big pass on bugs but does that mean we have to accept them in other games 'Just cuz" some others, or even many other have bugs too?
If Blizzard wanted to sell us on the fact this was all OK and going to work then it should have worked from the start. Also, many bugs in a game that is less than 20 hours is not OK. The game itself seems pretty bug free though. It is just the launcher and the connectivity piece that is problematic.
Anyway, I am done with my rant. Give em a pass if you want to but they failed to make me feel like the decision to force online, MMO style connectivity, was going to be OK.
No but you do play them and are used to the fact that being on-line is a requirement to playing those games. Thus, why is it such a HORRIBLE thing that OMFG I have to be on-line to play D3? I was making the assumption that people that frequent this site are MMO players and being on-line to play is second nature to them. No issue, no problem.
Yes, server problems suck. They need to sort that out ASAP, but it is not, IMO, reason to bash a game like I've seen done.
Firstly its not an mmo and secondly up untill now almost all hack and slash multiplayer games also had a offline mode but blizzard got GREEDY and won't aloud this under the fague statement prefend agains hacking BULLSHIT.
Torchlight 2 FOREVER!!!
If you want to commend someone for something, you should do it someplace other than a forum about MMO's, please.
http://youtu.be/GsqUZkmO-zk <<<<<<<<< This just cracked me up.
Considering there will be working server emulators in the next 6-9 months, I think there will be plenty of room for pirating. It's only the impatient ones that will buy it.
I only plan on playing single player on one character through normal. After that I'll be using it coop. I was certainly annoyed at not being able to play at times the first day, but it's already vastly improved.
