Because at one time (and now) so many of the community was talking about it here they added it. You can blame the site if you want but the community was talking about it anyways with tons of threads on the subject so they gave it its own forum.
Its got a lot of mmo elements, and it gives the site something more to cover, review, preview etc.
Adding it to the site was controversial to a small extent, with people like the OP asking "why?" but most of the community either didnt care or wanted it. I fall in the didnt care category as I saw no real problem with doing it.
First of all there is a huge crossover in the audience, as evidenced by the amount of use this forum gets.
Second, if there wasn't a forum for it, imagine all the Diablo threads that would be cluttering up the rest of this site. It already spills over sometimes. Heck, GW 2 spills over into general, the pub, and other game forums also.
I'm sure people that aren't into Diablo, but use the pub and general forums appreciate that this forum exists so they can discuss other Games in peace.

I can understand a "spillover" forum. I don't understand the main MMORPG page having main topics/reviews.
Otherwise MMORPG will start being overun by everything for CoD to BF3 to whatever 'non-mmo' game is out there.
WoW and SWTOR are both MMOs... If you think TOR isn't an mmo, it's probably because you haven't played it and haven't seen Illum, which did get pretty populated now and again back when I played. (For those that don't know, Illum is a (very flawed) open pvp zone with capturable points). It had some fairly large scale pvp going on after launch.
Diablo 3, on the other hand, isn't even remotely close to an mmo. It's still a decently fun co-op game. I'm not sure if it will hold my focus for very long though. In no way does Diablo 3 take the place of an mmo for most gamers.
I highly doubt Blizzard paid themto make a d3 forum/ write d3 articles. People that say that lose all credibility to me.
It is probably somewhat financially driven though inandifferent way. They want clicks. The audience for this game crosses over with the mmo crowd. The game is extremely popular.
Writing D3 articles gets them ad views. It gets them clicks. It is smart business. We want to read about the game. Simple as that.

well since they featured SWTOR which isnt a MMO they kinda have to...what do you mean SWTOR is a MMO?
Currently playing- SWG PreCU & GW 2
Have tried WoW, AoC, & Vanguard, SWG:NGE, GW, LOTRO & SWTOR
Best MMO: SWG
Worst MMO: SWTOR
If you can die when the gameservers hickup it has to be a MMO!
I agree that SWTOR is more of a single player with Co op options, but it at least has persistant zones and cities. When D3 doesn't.
If you're going to say SWTOR isn't an MMO, you might as well say WoW isn't an MMO...
when i last played WOW which i admit was a very long time ago it was more of a MMO then SWTOR.

Maybe we can get some forums to discuss the next Call of Duty game? It has more people in the maps so it is an even larger MASSIVE multiplayer game.

Activision Blizzard pays for advertising on this website. The site listed the game for more exposure. Is it an MMO? No. But it is what it is.
