I understand it is Hack and Slash but that does not mean it could not have a good story like Divine Divinity, I may buy it but only if it has a good story line
Well, it definitely has a story. You get to know a bit about the Blacksmith before he becomes your personal smith and you get to know about some of the people in the town of Tristam. While I don't think you would enjoy the game nearly as much without the story, it's not really necessary for the general game play. In other words, if you skip through it, you're not going to be hurting a whole lot.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Good story is somewhat subjective...but I do think the cinematics in the Diablo series have always been entertaining, and this one continues it. I'm playing it through because I do like the story, the lore and the world in which it's set. I played Diablo and Diablo 2 and I want to know what happens to the characters. However, I don't intend I playing it much past finishing Act 4. The gameplay just isn't up to par to what Diablo 2 was. I don't have the desire to work through the game multiple times like I did with Diablo 2. Maybe that's because I'm older and wiser now, or maybe because the game isn't as good. I'm not really sure.
Sorry so short answer is, in my opinion yes the story is good. Blizzard always makes nice cinematics and such.
EDIT: If you never played diablo or diablo 2 and don't know the stories in those games you COULD pick up this game and enjoy the story, but I will say playing through all 3 will make it much more interesting. The game talks about things that happened in those past games and while it does fill you in somewhat, it is all the more meaningful having experienced the other two.
The lore of Diablo is some of the best around. There are audio books you find in-game that give you immense information on events between The Angels and The Prime Evils. Personally I find Diablo's story to be of great interest on numerous levels, not only because it is mature but because it deals with a lot of grey area subjects.
There is a lot of lore there to uncover if you should so seek it, so yes - I would personally think Diablo has a fantastic story.

Have you seen the animated short they did? That was cool!

Without spoiling it for other people (or yourself depending on if you have the game yet), I just have to say Tyreal is even more awesome in this game than in Diablo 2. I'm only in Act 3 but the Act 1 ending cinematic was just awesome. Totally agree with the moral ambiguity in the story, it is very well done I think.
As someone that is NOT buying this game (because I find the gameplay weak), I have to say that the story, and how it is presented is excellent. It is clearly one of the strong points of the game.

Take the time to find all the lore books and talk to all NPC's, It add's much more story and detail to the game.
Just following the main quests is decent, but DO the extras- It provides much more info and story.

Aye, it was fantastic wasn't it. I love that we're finally exploring some of the Angel lore this time 'round. Seeing as we were primarily focused on the Primes in the last two games, and Tyreal.
The story is very good, however, if you're into the lore at all and participated in theories of what would happen in D3 before the game was released, you probably nailed it.
I guessed almost the whole storyline before I played through it, but there are a couple little twists I never expected... Hmm.... and some that really hit me after the game was done, rather than during the time it was happening, 'cause I was in kill mode. lol
In the end, it was fantastic, however. Very well done, even if corny as hell at times.
I agree with the statements on lore vs story in this thread.
The series has great lore. The story in this game is kind of weak, especially if you are new to it. They don't explain a lot of inside baseball stuff that fans are already aware of.
I've had several people in my guild asking others questions about certain unexplained elements (like what the heck is a nephalem).
They even seem to expect you to know some stuff from outside of the first two video games.
That being said, the basics of the story are made clear, but I would recommend reading a bit of the backstory on diablowiki or something if you are unfamiliar. It will help you enjoy the story.
The story in the game itself is mediocre to good. People familiar with diablo 1 will appreciate it more than others. The biggest draw is the lore behind the game. It's all the things combined that make it epic to some and means less for those less invested in the whole lore thing. I have two novels from the Diablo world and those give me a better...basis for imagination? Thus making it better as a whole.
By itself though it's kinda lame :P
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
I enjoyed the story. You can't control anything though, so it's no kotor/witcher.
My biggest gripe was the ending. The game just kinda...ended. I mean, there was a final boss and all, but there wasn't any denouement. It was just literally: "Click OK to end the game".
Edit: There was a final video, but most of the video was recapping what I just did.
Honestly as a mostly MMO player, and someone who has played Diablo 2 but not very extensively, I am really enjoying the story. Granted it is quite simple, I think that may be the thing keeping me interested. In MMOs the story can be so large and looming that it's hard to follow or feel invested. With Diablo 3 I find myself being interested in listening to the extra pieces of lore and the cinematics are just absolutely wonderful.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
I'd say the game (and the series) has very good lore, but can't say the same about the plot, necessarily.
I find the lore VERY shallow and CHEAP. But in the case off D3 it's done masterfully with the films between the acts, If you have money you can almost make any b-script good.
Angels and Demons? Diablo (The old name for Prince Lucifer) , Baal etc its all stolen names from old folclore picturing the names of diffrent fallen angels or "The Devil" in many diffrent names , the lore was once a meaning to an end to draw in litte kids in this Keeewl lore, and I guess succesfully as well..
If you want good lore, play Dragon Age or Mass Effect or the olden goldie "Planescape Torment".
And as you say yourself..The plot is also thin as ice..

The main story had parts where I crinched because of the way they're presented. Very...juvenile I guess. Not that I didn't expect it, but it still hurt a bit to sit through those parts. The red line through the story is pretty good actually. The player has a personality now too, which always a bit risky (I look at you, Dead Space), but I liked the attitude of the female Wizard I was playing. It suited her.
Storywise, the best parts are the supporting characters, from your followers, to the crafters, to the NPC's in every act. They feel alive and meaningfull. The banter between my followers reminded me of previous Bioware games, which is a huge compliment in my opinion.
I had to laugh a bit when Thark mentioned Dragon Age for the lore. While I enjoyed that game and the lore is presented well, it's not original in any way. For example, in the Fade you've these demons, based around the Seven Sins. Then there're the stereotypical woodland elves, dwarfs under the ground, etc. I mean, if you're going to criticise Diablo on the use of Angels and Demons, don't mention Dragon Age for the "better lore".
I agree though that Mass Effect has pretty solid lore, with believable alien races and technology. But then they had to screw it up with red, blue or green

They could make a full length or at least half length movie using those cinematics. It would be awesome.

Nice video.
Though it would have been amazing if it was done like the cinematics in the game...the fight scene between Tyreal and Imperius was awesome.

I would say it has really great lore, but a not too good story. (however this not so good story is told in a good way )

I love this IP.
However, compared to Diablo 2 i thought the ending was a tad weak.
Still a wonderful game that i'll be playing for hours.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing

Good lore, decent but predictable story, terribly cliche dialogues.
I love the main story, gets pretty crazy sometimes. I was not expecitng to see Tyrael enter the game the way he did, thought that was very cool.
Theres also quite a bit of cool side lore stuff if you explore the game more and find books.
