I did try a few, they were all crap.

Then perhaps you should try playing a game where it requires you to pay... I hear those are better. ;-)

Few years back when I was still schooling, I didn't have enough money to pay monthly MMOs. Living in Malaysia, US10-15 becomes like RM 35-45. @.@ a plate of mix rice for lunch would range RM3.oo-5.oo, thats like 9 times 1 meal....
So I tried looking for free mmorpgs. Well, truth be said, you can't experience good gameplay for long, at least not for me, I tried a lot of free for life MMOs, just can't cut it.
So I did beta hopping. I hop from beta to beta. Soon, good betas started to run out, and for me, it was back to single player offline games. So until I get a job, MMO monthly is totally out of the question.

Well, you can wait for the coming of the new .hack//Fragment MMORPG that will come. I've read that you will be also able to play in single player mode, and that you would have to connect to a lobby where you would find other players and then join in adventures with a formed party. Sounds alot like Phantasy Star Online to me :P but might be good since it will also not have a monthly fee.

Personaly I dont like Guild Wars and dont really advice it to anyone who really likes MMORPGs, since its too much Diablo style to be even considered a MMORPG.. yes, I'm refering myself to the part in which you can only interact with other ppl inside towns.. outside towns you will only interact with your party members.. but hey, tastes are tastes and I dont want to offend any GW fans :P just stating my opinion.
If you are expecting $50 for a lifetime, I'm afraid you might get disappointed. But I would say, it will be worth your $50, if you see it as a type of game where you play once and maybe a couple times more, thats it. Sure it has updates, and new content, but definitely not the type of game where you play for hours to level up. The max level is only 20, which isn't really the main focus.
Its a great game for $50. Dont expect to compare with other games which comes with monthly fee.

It's got a good 30-60 days of playtime. Worth the $50 easy.
