Apparently Schillings told R.I. that they were not going to be able to make payrole for their 300ish employees and then tried to make the 1.1 million loan payment with a check that wouldn't clear due to insufficient funds.
38 Studios should have been a sure fire thing. You had Curt Schilling whos fame as a ball player carries a lot of weight, R.A. Salvatore who is an award winning author and one many gamers enjoy, Ken Rolston who was the lead designer for Morrowing and Oblivion, and last but not least Todd McFarlane a renound comic book artist.
This should have spelled success, but sadly it seems to have equated to disaster instead.
It's one thing to go bottom up as a game company with that much talent on board, but it becomes tragic when going bottom up puts such a strain on a state like Rhode Island.
The lesson learned here is up for debate, but I think what ever it ends up being it is not going to be good for gaming or gamers.
With all this in mind I think it is safe to assume that unless some miracle happens for 38 Studios, we will not see Copernicus launch.
What do you think, will we see a Miracle on 38th street or will we see a high profile studio fall and further shine a bad light on the gaming industry?

There is an even worse possibility than closing down: That EA or Activision buys them up...
I hope they get some additional funding and ride out the storm instead.
This news is so "38 seconds" ago, and a not quite accurate.

The most important lessons to be learned IMO include:
1) Never bet what you can't afford to lose, ergo government agencies should not be in the venture capital business
2) Being a long time player of MMO's does not mean you know how to actually make one yourself.
3) Creating MMO's is a business, and their development needs to be run like one.

Here is a nice timeline of the financial problems with the company:

I think Salvatore really is their biggest asset, he is very popular particularly with his female readers.
To be honest do I think a lot matters what they have now, if they have an interesting game in alpha EA might very well buy it, they have done so before... If on the other hand it is just another game that are similar to EQ and Wow with a slightly different setting they have zero chanse of being bought up.
that link doesnt work for me because of my forum settings of how many posts per page (I have no page 6)
