I quit around the time DAOC was launched, with my last MMORPG played being Anarchy Online (After coming from UO, AC, and with a brief stint in EQ). I was tired of the direction MMORPGs were moving in, being centered around leveling treadmills and phat lewt. I vowed not to return until game developers got their heads screwed on strait and decided to make a real MMORPG.
Let me say that my ideal game would be the fictional Horizons - The one which was promised by the original devs but never delivered because they decided it would be more marketable to fashion it after the EQ mold.
One thing I'm primarily interested in with a MMORPG is the ability to play a rogue/thief type of class. Unfortunately few games offer this kind of gameplay because they want to coddle their players and insulate them from being effected negatively by other players. I yearn for the classic RPGs were stealing and PvP were a basic part of the gameplay, but there were also natural consequences for such actions in order to keep it in check.
Which takes me to the next thing I look for in a good MMORPG: PvP. I think it's critical to a good MMORPG, and I prefer it to be universal (like AC's darktide server) as opposed to some "PvP zone" like most MMORPGs have. DAoC's PvP is really not what I'm looking for, because I prefer PvP that is meaningful to the world as an RPG and social element (like darktide) as opposed to being some kind of overglorified soccer match.
Overall I prefer games that are basically similar to the Ultimate Online mold, and I would like to find a modern equivalent to this classic.
Any thoughts on what that might be?

Many ex UO players enjoy Saga of Ryzom these days, for PvP & the skill base leveling system.
Awesome game
Is there any thievery or roguish/assassinish activities in the Saga of Ryzom?
