(also great series are heroes of m&m, civilization, before the 3. part i would say also master of orion, and if we count it as a series, then also amberstar/ambermoon/albion)
As others have said, for me the greatest series goes to the Civilization series. From the time I started playing it (started with III shortly after it came out), it's been the one series that has always had one version or another installed on my HD. Brilliant game series.
Many other good choices out there too, but the second series that would be close to Civ is the Monkey Island series. Though I really enjoyed the Seirra "Quest" series (Space Quest and King's Quest more then Police Quest and Quest for Glory), the light-hearted tone of MI and the bizzare puzzles alwasy keeps me coming back. I miss good adventure games!
Probally the xwing/tie fighter series of games... I must admit i spent quite a bit of my youth playing those games and designing missions.. Probally the most time I have spent with any series of games so yeah that gets my vote..
Also a winge... LucasArts we need a new X-Wing game and none of this cartoon crappy clone wars stuff plz LOL
I loved the complex single-player RPGs that Richard Garriot AKA Lord British introduced to the genre. They were the king of the RPG market in their time, and there is no doubt that Ultima Online heavily influenced the direction of modern day MMORPGs today.
I am not really a huge Ultima fan but when you consider the history and trend setting of that series I just can't think any series IN TOtAL that deserves it more. Even if there are individual games I like more.
Modern CRPGS just owe so much to Ultima 4/5/6/7 then you have Ultima Underworld which basically sort of redefined RPGs and paved the way for action RPG style stuff. And then Ultima online. And every one of those games is so deep and rich compared to msot of its comteporaries or even its decendants that its pretty amazing.
People who think Mass Effect is somehow amazing because of choices ... Ultima puts those games to shame. Complete shame.
Hate on Richard Garriot all you want, but when you compare the body of work from Akallabeth to Ultima Online to the rest of the entire RPG genre its pretty darn striking.

Well... except for the part about "NOT really a huge Ultima fan", because some of my best memories of gaming were sitting with a couple of my best friends and playing Ultima 4 side-by-side.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
This is a hard one as there are so many I like. However, there are a certain few that I will buy or have bought just because it is a part of a series. They are:
Suikoden
Final Fantasy
Grandia
dot Hack
Soul Calibur
Dynasty Warriors
I would say Zelda but there are some in the series that I wouldn't buy same with Pokemon

Super Mario. It's untouchable!

Saints row. It only went uphill from 1.
I'd have to go with Zelda, Ocarina of Time is still one of the best games to date imo
As long as two games constitutes a series:

I'd have to go with the old school Ultima series.

i voted for Elder Scrolls although i am not fan of those, but they still survive in time and grow up ...
same is with Resident Evil
but a decade ago i would vote for Zelda or Super Mario and for sure Monkey Islands ..!
but both are "dead" for me now ...

The Monkey Island Series
Gabriel Knight Series
Tex Murphy Series
The Myst Series
The Elder Scrolls (esp. Morrowind and Oblivion, for me)
A toss up. I loved them all so so much. I guess if I was pressed to pick JUST one, it would probably be Gabriel Knight.

Alot of cinematic questwriters should look into those games for voiceacting
Ultima series up to ultima 7 and its expansions were my favorites of all time.
didn't get as much into 8, 9, or ultima online as those.
Elder Scrolls, nothing comes close in my opinion. Resident Evil was pretty awesome too.
