I give up telling people not to buy a card based on the word "fully supports direct x 9" sigh.
Anyhow i have seen a few benchmark test test where the fx5900 ultra outperformed the radeon 9800 pro but honestly i agree does not justify the cost whatsoever.
As pointed out the ti4600 cost half and is just less then 10 percent behind the fx5900 and the radeon 9800 pro is extremely close to the fx5900 ultra (might even beat it in some cases) and the radeon 9700 pro(which slightly outperforms the ti4600) is very close behind too .
Looking at those benchmark test i am not suprised the fx5600 did rather poorly as i have read and heard many people prefer to go with a ti4200(agpx8) card then it .When i learnt that the fx5600 would not use same articheture as the the fx5900 i never expected much from it.
FX5900 ultra is probably not worth the money but then again I have always said the fx series have been a dissapointment to begin with.
Unlike the geforce4ti series that provided good value for money and good graphics performance to match the fx series has been a total let down when it comes for value so yes radeons are slowly becoming the card of preference for me(i myself am eyeing the radeon 9700 pro as my next buy).
I must agree with you on the 5600 and 5200 versions of the FX. They are no where as good as the lower end Ti cards... I'm happy with my Nvidia GeForce 4MX 440SE.

Thats why i say never take what this people(aka ati and nvidia) to heart.
It advertises the fx5600 ultra(top range of the fx5600) as its mid range card yet the card is only slightly stronger then the fx5200.
The fx5600 ultra has less fill rates and verticles per sec then the ti4200 .
Yes it has more bandwitdth and more RAM but its the fill rate espically that makes that card run fast .
Bandwitdth above 8gb/sec does little if anything to speed of a game since most games barely use more then 4gb/sec even on top notch connection but games eats fill rates(that thing that makes smooth transaction when turning your view) and verticle per sec like a starving refugeee.
As for RAM i point to all the benchmark test when the ti4200 64ram went against the 128ram(non agpx8) version to show it means almost nothing.
If you lag it is because of the main RAM not the gcard RAM.
So really how they can get away saying this is a mid range card i dunno.
I gained faith in nvidia after the successful value for money cards they gave us in the geforce4ti but really i think radeons are becoming card of choice for value.
i read in pcworld that the 9700 pro outperformed the 9800 and 5900 in some tests.

You have to also remember that each test runs different on each videocard. Murt, stop worrying. It's not only the videocard that can make a game "lag", it's the overall parts.
With the system you're getting, you shouldn't worry. It's not like you're trying to run EQ2 on a MAC or something.

only the 9700 was pro i believe, at least thatd be my best guess, i doubt it could outperform 9800 pro. the 5900 wasnt ultra either.

There, even the 9800 128 mb version outperforms the FX 5900, it has half the mb and costs about 100-175$ less.

You are right Satan. Murt seems to say "lag" for the FPS. Connection = lag, videocard = FPS.
He doesn't want the game to lag... Murt, I would be more worried about your Internet connection rather then your PC right now.

Yep FPS= video card and i think the term used is drag not lag actually.
Not sure the radeon 9700 can outperform the 9800 if both are pro version if not pro then sure.
Erm as for the fx5900 dunno last benchmark test i seen it was king.
only the 9700 was pro i believe, at least thatd be my best guess, i doubt it could outperform 9800 pro. the 5900 wasnt ultra either.
