Because it is part of their cultural style?

    Next question?

  • quasi_deadquasi_dead Member Posts: 84

Because Asian culture can be quite effeminate.  Broadly speaking.

its probably the influence of mangas that came out back in the 1970s and how it has influence asia culture.

Same reason americans are poor gamers but like fluff and flashy colors.

Bingo! Modern "shoujo" mangas (google if you dont know what shoujo means) always potrays males as "pretty boys" or bi-shonen (google it). Slowly this have been accepted by the masses. Koreans, like always, popularise them.

If you look at most K-pop/J-pop male artists, they all looked gay-ish.

It must be expensive to get your hair ALL styled like that (refering to J-hair).

Good job on the thread title. There was no way I could not look inside with a flamboyant question like that.

I don't like the asian art style (except when they animate machines) period, and it's the reason i won't play Tera, Archeage, etc. It also makes me not want to play GW2 cause of those floppy-headed, big-eyed Asura that run like puppets with strings holding their heads up.

Art design is subjective though. For every one of me there are 100 who eat that stuff up.

Because they like that kind of fantasy. It is all about crappy anime or manga, i could never understand how somebody can like that kind of childish animation. Thats the only reason why i don't want to play awesome game like gw2. If i see just a little part of the game going toward anime i am just getting ill and don't want to even give a try.

Another way to see it is:

Why is western art so unsubtle and primitive with the swollen muscles and gigantic weapons? We need such overt displays to declare our masculinity while in asian cultures a man's presence is more about his mental discipline. Neither is right or wrong just different. You should travel more if you are confused by it.

Since this is a controversial thread, I probably shouldn't venture in, but what the hell. Um...I've lived in Korea for 12 years (I'm an American) and my teenage son has spent a lot of time here. He told me this:

"Koreans (you can extend it as far as you want to other Asians, or not) don't have a subculture of teenage rebellion (of course there are rebellious individuals in every society -- It's just not permitted, much less glorified here). There is  no way this culture is ready to spawn something like punk rock, for  example. They are not into the gritty. They want nice things that other people will think are nice and look nice. They don't want to stand out in an odd or unpleasant way.  Their parents want them to have nice shiny things and so that's what they want."

I think they had such a shite history of warfare, invasion, famine, dictatorship, a caste system, etc. that they are attracted to beauty (as conceived of here as being new, nice, shiny, guilded with gold and other Rococo/Late Baroque + Victorian aesthetics -- this is considered "high class" here). Games are idealized views of life we like to escape into. Asia is crowded and life has been very harsh in Korea up until the very recent past. It was an oppressed agricultural society, which was transformed through war and dictatorship into an industrial society, and now a high tech, globalized one. They didn't have the hundreds of years to do it at their own pace that Europeans did. Koreans went through all of this in about a century.  Today, South Korea is pretty rich but this place is still pretty crowded and gritty and there is noise, pollution, dust, ubiquitous construction, intense competition, and the looming threat of North Korea....People want a heaven-like fantasy world without the rough edges.

On the other hand, games like Diablo and WoW are extremely popular. People can appreciate those art styles, for sure. Koreans just don't seem to produce that kind of stuff themselves. It doesn't flow from their way of thinking, apparently.  They have their own aesthetic values, also similar to, but different from Japanese.

I know it's hard to do justice to this topic here, and it's interesting to me. Yes, I know there are tons of generalizations here, but this is not an academic paper.  Also, I wouldn't agree to say it's "gay" or "feminine." I think Koreans would probably think of their design and style preferences as reflecting taste and refinement. That's just my guess though.

EDIT: Also, in South Korea, there was a very macho culture from the 1950s through the 1990s, which coincided with dictatorship here. I believe the softer male image (characterize it how you want) is a kind of backlash or rejection of this by the younger generation. Just 10 years ago  women were not socially permitted to smoke at all and especially not in front of men. If a man saw a woman smoking, it was totally acceptable to walk up to her and snatch the cigarette out of her mouth. I've even had students of mine tell me this has happened to them as recently as the last year or two (it was a really old guy). Women, especially, are not into overbearing and patriarchal men like their fathers and grandfathers, so if guys want to get busy, they have to satisfy what women want. Otherwise, they will be out of luck. Just my two cents.

Can't overlook the fact that Koreans consider themselves the pure race.  I'm sure that has a little to do with it as well.

Personally, i find eastern art so much more appealing than western.

Do you have a link or black and white proof for the remarks that Koreans consider themselves the pure race?

Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language :)

Of COURSE!  I mean only with Eastern RPGS can you get a game where you try to get girls pregnant, so they have babies, who help you fight monsters in dungeons (the babies I mean...ahem).   http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012/04/24/video-conception-please-deliver-my-child-release-trailer

Plus you get games with names like " Yong Soon Tongue Splash Bold Interaction 12 Chronicles" and  " Mommy Budda 12: Rashy Panther Saga Episode: 9 Children"

Im fairly convinced what they do see.....is they take a random developer, spin him in circles 48 times, bash his head into a hard surface at least 3 times, before pointing a gun to their heads and screaming at them they have 5 seconds to name the game.  WHATEVER COMES TO MIND FIRST!  SAY IT!  SAY IT!   " Okay..... Moonball Rising Twice Seaweed Trilogy Without Mustard Prelude 12 ! "  image

Only in the east.  Its great!  /sarcasm
