Its simple reason this site is a place for fans of MMORPGs to gather and discuss the latest mmorpg stylr games. It is not limiting itself to JUST MMORPGs it also branches out to bring to our attention games which are similar to the mold.
By this I mean games which we the mMORPG community will find of interest. Mechwarrior Online and World of Tanks are such games though they are not in themselves MMORPGS they do share certain characteristics. Such as a large online pool of players, the games being driven and played over the internet with character/vehicle development over time.
Simply put MechWarrior online has a foum here because WE the community want it here.
Funny, I don't recall a vote.
Forums are rarely ever a democracy almost always a dictatorship. By saying WE the community I mean overall we want to hear about the games which are of interest . Mechwarrior Online is a game of interest its related to our genre in general.
So its a lobby based game? Given the focus and multi player aspects, I've no objections to it being covered by this site. It would hardly be the first lobby game thats been covered here, nor I suspect will it be the last. Mech Warrior looks like a lot of fun, and brings back memories of some of the earlier games in the series. We can argue endlessly about what an "MMO" is, but I'm more interested in seeing if the game is entertaining to play.
WoT is a semi mmo, in that you have leveling progression. you level up by unlocking tanks of higher level and level up the crews of said tank to improve skills of it.
if MWO is going that same way, its basicly in laments terms an mmo in that it has a level progression/grind that many mmos have.
with the fluff of MW they can easily include "mission" quests that players carry out in a persistant state of flux. so yes while its not a full on MMORPG like many games. it is still a MMo in some form so perfectly fine for the site to cover.
other wise they may as well strip APB:r , combat arms, D3, WoT, and several other games off the roster as they dont fall in to a fully MMORPG. they are either purely lobby or simply RPgs
but then again who really cares anymore?? they made FPSguru for their FPS games and the RTSguru for the RTS games i dont see why mmorpg cant cover these games as well as the cookie cutter generic ones
I'm not saying that this redefines the meaning of MMORPG, but I fit the market segment that this site is supporting, however you define it.
You can probably blame WoW Battlegrounds for this evolution. Folks who enjoy PvP became their own niche within WoW, Rift, SW:TOR, the list goes on.
Now companies are serving that niche directly but the genre isn't big enough to support its own site.. I think it fits just fine as a subgenre here.
I think you've got a point here. Arena/Battleground/Warzones....call them what you like, but in many instances I'd bet people would still play them even if the MMO surrounding it was absent. A lot of players just do the matches....that's it. Not saying this is where I'd like MMORPGs to go, but there's a market for it for sure.
Only reason BF3 and COD3 etc are not on this site and listed is because of the FPSguru, otherwise they would be listed here too because they are just as much mmorpgs as WoT, MWO, Diablo 3, any MOBA etc. Any person thinking that a lobby + gaining XP makes a game a mmorpg is under heavy heavy delusions. They are instanced small scale scenario based multiplayer games. Even GW1 is admitted to not being a mmorpg by the fans of that game, so these lobby shooters with their tiny maps and no open access to the world sure as hell are nowhere near a MMORPG title.
Actually WoT has a persistant world meta game and MWO will have one eventually also. Just because you can't walk around it in your elf shooting magic missles doesn't mean it doesn't count.
Meta game != MMO. If consensus says it does, then there should be many many more games listed as MMO's that are not listed. MAG for the ps3 should be listed as an MMO if MWO is listed.
I agree that this site should change it's name if it's not going to stick with MMORPGs (not saying they have to keep to only MMORPGs, but the site title and domain are misleading. They should show some integrity and change it.)
