Sandboxes were acutally the majority 9-10 years ago then WoW happened.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Goat meat is the most consumed meat worldwide out of both chicken and beef ... that doesnt mean it taste better
Plenty of people avoided Dark Souls (including myself) cause I want something enjoyable and something like DS (with the harsh death penalty) isn't what I find enjoyable.
There were more people that avoided Dark Souls than attracted to it. That's not saying Dark Souls is a bad game or a good game, it was a niche product for a niche audience. Nothing wrong with that but a product with narrow appeal won't get a lot of variety.
MMO Sandbox is exactly the same. 'MMO Sandbox' fans who bought a 'MMO Sandbox' isn't that large compared to themeparks (that's a fact).
In red = Not true
You proved my point
This is the generation that cant die, cant lose thier stuff, avoiding any and all obstacles that would merit any difficulty, yellow dotted line for the quest... lol this is why the games being released are trash. Darksouls 1.09 Million sold worldwide and nominated for RPG and Multiplayer game of the year. You probably didnt even play because the death penalty isnt even that bad. Tsk tsk tsk
Themeparks will continue to get released because of this generation
Yep, that's my generation and that's my kind of games.
There are more of people with my gaming taste then yours so there are more games to match my gaming taste.
Isn't that 'working as intended'?
Yeap. And gaming generations die out. They just do. So, just wait another 3-5 years and your flavor may be niche, and sandbox and death penality or whatever is the new flavor of the year.
But dont worry, there will be some crap indy companies, who are in flavor of what you want, and they will make some crappy, completely bugged themeparks, and you can play that while you complain on mmorpg.com, why at hell no new AAA themepark will be done.

MMORPG is split between two types of gamers: 1) those who favor sandboxes and 2) those who are looking for combat action rpgs. Just look at the front page of the site at the most anticipated games. Guild Wars 2 is (now) number 1 - combat action rpg. Most of the others are heavy with sandbox elements.
Of the sandbox gamers I see them split up into two types: 1) the old games were the best and 2) those who want a true completely modifiable world. Personally I have no desire to retreat to the original days of EQ and UO. WOW did so much to make things less frustrating. The exclamation point/question mark was one of the best ideas of WOW. I spent so many f--king hours looking for quests and trying to determine how to complete them in EQ. Done. Never again.
There will never be an MMO that has a true, completely modifiable world. It would have to be instanced for every player, thus killing most social interaction. The closest you could come would be to so something that I have never seen done - have a persisent world where major events DO change the course of the world. Example: an npc faction called "Consoles" is the major antagonist. The Consoles target major towns outside the start up area to take over and/or destroy. The players attempt to stop the Consoles. The spawn rate of the Consoles will vary from time to time so that they take over a major town. When taken the town will stay taken until players win it back. The town will recover as the Consoles spawn rate dwindles. Then the spawn rate picks up and the battle begins again. Almost realistic cause and effect like what the pre-publication of RIFT showed.

Something I only became aware of only the past few weeks. The more I started visiting this site, the more I realised how odd mmorpg.com is in community compared to some other gaming sites and forums I visit.
For one, I don't think I've seen a site where WoW is so much and heavily detested as here. Let alone other themepark MMO's, which are despised, hated and trashed even worse.
At the same time there's the non-stop consistent, almost ecstatic praise and love for sandbox MMO's and that's when it hit me: mmorpg.com is where the sandbox MMO gamers gather, in far larger numbers than any other gaming or MMO site!
Not completely what I'd expected, I assumed the mmorpg.com community would be more like on other forums and sites or the general MMO playerbase, but seeing as how WoW is reviled here yet still played by millions and millions, that doesn't seem to be the case.
But in a way it makes sense: after all, many people come here who're bored and don't really have an MMO to play, and if there's one group who're most likely out of MMO's to play or have fun in, then it's the pure sandbox MMO crowd. So it stands to reason that those are most likely to not be playing MMO's but to hang around MMO forums.
Heck, it's how I ended up here myself, I knew of mmorpg.com for a long while, but it's only when I was inbetween MMO's and was looking around for MMO news and bored that I started visiting this site more actively.
But what do you people think, do you think that sandbox fans make up the majority of the mmorpg.com visitors/posters? I think it's larger, maybe even far larger, percentage than on other game and MMO sites, but that's just my impression.
Don't kid yourself most here who dispise themeparks in reality like WoW and actually playing themeparks go figure:)
I think majority here are not realy sandbox fans but just pretending(Wait dont flame me i can't proof a thing i just said ok)they love sandbox but in all honesty they LOVE themeparks hahaha..
Go read some post by so called thempark haters but fans of sandbox you know what i mean:)
I say to each his own i don't hate themeparks or sandbox some i like some i don't like.
Im fan of Darkfall and GW2 i love DayZ is superb, but i don't like WoW played Lineage 2 but think Saga of Ryzom is better.

There are certainly different types of gamers here, and increasingly so. I would describe them roughly as follows:
1. Fans of MMORPGs - that includes sandboxes but also people that like the old-school MMORPGs (long term playing, community building, slow levelling, steep learning curve, more content than combat alone).
2. Fans of MMOs, these people like the massively multiplayer experience but don't really like RPGs. Instead they prefer action combat styles (short term playing, only community that matters is my guild, fast levelling or no levelling at all, easy to pick-up, combat-centric).
Pre-WoW the majority of the players and the posters here would have been in group 1. That is no longer the case. Since a few years the majority of players and users of this site is probably in group 2.
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
I will say that it isn't common to have 2 subs so most people will choose 1 game as a sub.
And so they must be openly hostile towards any game except the one they chose? That's just...juevenile.
Better than being secretly hostile to any "person" who hasn't been enlightened. Being openly hostile toward a game is fine as long as you follow the rules.
Talking about other people especially your fellow mmorpg.com user is against the rules with a few exceptions. It's also really wierd. Not saying you're guilty and im innocent. Just saying Id rather play with the people who follow the rules, than the people who are above them.
Pretty sure backseat moderation is also against the rules.
'secretly hostile' hahaha Good one!
If I say 'I think gamers who constantly pester someone cause they are female is juevenile' is that against the rules? pretty sure it is not.
Talk about the topic or at least explain how someone can be hostile towards a VIDEO GAME.
I don't like Jazz, but that doesn't mean I hate a jazz album. That doesn't make any sense.
I dont like it when stalkers pose as posters. That's not agaisnt the rules, but it's secretly hostile and cowardice.
If you say " Fikus, you are constantly pestering someone because they are female, and thats juvenile in my opinion" is perfect. Or you can report me and be done with it. At least you are responding to something I posted. Making that comment because you dont like what I say about games as a generic post not directed at me is being secretly hostile. If you guys dont like what people are saying, man up and tell em. It looks weird otherwise.
You probably dont think Im trying to help either.
If you guys are gonna play the judge and jury of "some" people Ill play the victim all day.
If you dont understand how someone can be hostile to a video game, then ask. It's pretty simple and it's human nature as predictable as the sunrise. You can understand attacking people for hating jazz, but not understand attacking jazz because people hate it? Most poeple it's the exact opposite.
Feel free to make fun of sandboxes or VW or theme all you want. It's not like we can defend any of them.
You keep this up, and I may have to out you as a sandboxer!

You know a funny thing is, people think because I support(ed) EVE that I'm a rabid sandbox player. Fact is that's the only one I played and enjoyed. (Xyson was a disappointment, not enough themepark for me I guess)
It's true that I'm a BitterVet™ but not because of any huge craving for sandbox style games, I just want something different. (and good I suppose, that's important too)
Take a look at my join date to MMORPG.com, there's a reason for it.
Prior to 2006, I had tried the following MMO's in this order. Lineage 1, DAOC, Shadowbane, COH, Lineage 2 and WOW. Each title brought new things to the table and provided a significantly different playing experience from the previous ones. (even L2 vs L1)
I was happy with the games I played and the only forums I frequented were those specifically related to the game I was currently playing.
What's funny is I thought each title I played would build on the previous one and that features I found in one game would naturally be incorporated to future titles. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to totally not be the case.
I was actually in denial and was sure that one day Blizzard would be releasing a FFA PVP server, and that they would add rewards to the open world PVP servers that would make it worth fighting for (a la DAOC). I never saw the whole BG's thing coming, and I really didn't comprehend where the Gear grinding/raiding design was going until BC was announced.
I went looking for a new game to play, tried DDO for a bit, discovered that different was not always better, (gave COV as shot in between breaks in WOW in 2005 as I recall), tried out GW1 and found some of these newer titles really weren't proper MMORPG's as I defined them. I returned to DAOC for a time in 2006 to pass the time and wait for some other games.
It was around this time I found MMORPG and found a like minded community of gamers looking for the next big thing in new and different. We've been waiting for a long time now and only a glimmer of hope on the horizon so far.
I gave Vanguard a shot in early 2007, but the game breaking bugs drove me off, then I tried LOTRO and it really first hit me, around level 30 I felt like I was playing WOW again. That was the start of a theme park pattern that I feel largely continues in most titles to this day.
Fortunately I found EVE and part of the reason I enjoyed it was because it was so different from all games I had previously played.
I've sort of given up looking these days, I play most major titles and find the fun where I can, but I keep hoping that a MMORPG will come out that will surprise me like EVE did with some very different gameplay. (I'm currently hoping GW2 will have some of that).
I currently play TERA not because it's a good MMORPG, (its very average I concede) but the combat system is enough to encourage me to play it over any other standard theme park. I find healing via targeting to be quite challenging and more interesting than anything else out there right now and it will hold me over until something new (and perhaps original) comes along.

No it's refuge for MMO gamers since these are all mmo's. why are people so threatened by the word sandbox?
Mainly because every time a new MMO is announced or reviewed, a fair portion of the negative responses around here basically boil down to "not sandboxy enough". If people who are looking for sandbox experiences just ignored themeparks, which are never going to be NOR ARE THEY TRYING TO BE sandboxes, that'd be one thing. But they don't ignore them, and it's grating.
MMORPG.com isn't a sandbox gamer's haven - it's a wannabe sandbox gamer's haven.
There's a thread on here about people bawwing because Goons stopped these 'sandbox enthusiasts' from mining ice in EVE. When sandbox is a hipster and cool thing, then they definitely love EVE, but when they're getting destroyed by the mechanics that they lobby for on every game's thread saying 'NOT SANDBAWKS ENOUGH!!!!', then they suddenly sing a different tune.
In reality, MMORPG.com is a metagame about trolls, admin abuse, and hypocrit sandbox gamers.

MMORPG.com is a haven for all kinds of MMO fanatics.
Some are sandboxers, the old SWG vets are probably the loudest of them but there are plenty of vets from EQ, AC and M59 here as well.
Not so many rabid Wow fans as one would expect though, but fans of a single game probably usually hang out at that games official forum.
