In World of Warcraft, I felt like I was at a disadvantage because of my slow leveling speed when it first released. By the time I hit the level cap, players had moved on past the first raid dungeon and were working on the next two. I had a very difficult time finding groups to help me advance my character.
If I start playing Rift today, will it be the same? Will I be standing in a capital city spamming "LFG" and never finding a group for the dungeon I need to do to advance? Is the game already dead, population-wise?

You queue up in the Dungeon Finder and you wait. While leveling some level ranges are better than others. Even as a tank you will have lengthy waits sometimes.
At max level there are more than a few problems as well. Before you can do Expert dungeons(Heroics do use WoW terminology) you need a certain item level. To get to the required item level can take some time. For my most recent max level character in Rift it took a week from when I hit level 50 to when I could do Expert dungeons.
And then theres raids. Raid progression can be quite a grind.
random groups are always a problem, maybe you lack a certain class or skill who would help in that dungeon, also most people consider if you need to find a random group, you are not good enough, to run in a static, and since most of time I always find lazy ones very often in random groups then in a guild one,
if you want to play just go in and play it, MMO main feature is the grind for things, try to join a guild and make some friends, maybe with people from your town or country, you need to group so group up with people and try to have fun, don't matter much with gear till you get on that part you ask yourself, I still ahve fun playing? should I make my char better? I want to do it? if yes then go ahead.
You could be caught up and raiding within a month of starting if you wanted. So I think it's worth starting as a new player. I'd join some leveling guild and just work my way up. Also, I'd level up on a PVE server and transfer to a PVP server once you're 50 (free server transfers), it'll make zone events a lot easier. My first character I leveled mainly through quest, my second character stopped doing quest around level 25%, they weren't as fast as dungeons/bg's/instant adventure at lvl45.
Rift
I am afraid not my dear friend ... it is not worth starting. Unfortunately, Rift is being over shadowed by several new games that are emerging. It lasted well for a while as a rather funny little cookie cutter. I suggest you look to the hallowed halls of mystery, suspense and deviation for your next game. Now, sadly Rift is dying.
Just curious slavo. You seem to think rift is dying, where do you get your information please..you have done 5 posts of which 4 are about rift..there will still be plenty of people playing this game, especially with the new 3 faction pvp and all the content they keep adding.granted people will leave when gw2 is released and TSW but you will always have your die hards who will play the game..just waiting to see how it does when the pvp is released(3 faction)
rift is a good game, especially for someone who liked to tinker with their skill/talent build (i dont know if this is you, OP)
level up doing a little bit of everything (questing, the rifts themselves, dungeons) and i am sure if you play a lot you will be able to do the raids at the end of the game in 6 weeks.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Most people who play MMOs just flock to the new games that have all the attention so they feel like they are part of "the" game.
It's not dying, the announcement of the new expansion looks huge!
Gearing up is very easy. There are 3 tiers of raids. GSB/RoS are 20 man T1's. DH and GP are 10 man T1's. HK is a 20 man T2 and RoTP os a 10 man T2. ID is a 20 man Tier 3.
It takes 1-3 days played to reach 50 depending on the player, It only takes a few hours of gearing up to have the hit/focus/toughness to do Random Experts. It is very easy to get a random expert as people need them daily for ID marks. The population has taken a hit the last month and there are wait times on some servers to get expert dungoens. Especially if your queing as dps. But if your a healer/tank you should get into a dungeon group almost instantenously. You can get raid ready for Tier 1 raids doing expert dungeonsafter a few hours. . It should not take longer than a week to become ready for the Tier 2 raid 20 man HK. Becoming ID ready of 421 focus/Hit could take a couple of weeks to a few months depending on how motivated you are. But keep in mind meeting the minimum Hit/Focus requirements and being a good raider will take much longer. It will take you a month or two of work to become fully geared whereby you can contribute at a high level not to mention time learning different roles and playstyles.
Gearing up is very fast. It just depends on your motivation. Almost all servers have pugs raids that do all the Tier 1 raid dungeons and HK. RoTP is bit more difficult as its harder to carry newer people. There are weekly raid quests that give ID marks so people are encouraged to do the old raid dungeons and likely the reason there are so many pug raids. Chck the forums and check 50 chat. My best advice would be to find a competent guild that help you with advice and groups. But there are so many PUG raids in Rift one can progress very fast on their own quite quickly.
You can get the gear fast but mroe improtant is to have fun and make friends with people. That is usually what keeps people playing. Finding a good guild or people one can play with iis IMO the biggest challenge. The gear will happen quite fast after you have done that.
Love the haters saying the game is dead when they just launched in Russia/Asia and about to release a expansion that will triple the game world.
I logged into Rift last night after taking a couple of months off and it was hopping (Wolfsbane server). Most of my guild was still active and my friends list had several people online.
I'm rolling a new char for fun and even the lower level areas were still pretty busy.
That being said, I think it's a great time to give Rift a try.
