as the title suggests, are you not worried about the press this mod has been getting as of late?
i have seen no less then 4 popular sources online talking or "lets play/stream" of DayZ, and frankly while i have nothing against the mod developer and the game it self im kinda of worried the mass press may cause issues for this mod.
quite simply put, in its current state DayZ is flagged as an Alpha test build Mod for ArmA 2 now while that is great and fine. its also being flagged around alot as a totally free to play "mmo" of sorts. now there in lies the trouble i forsee happening in the future.
right now this mod is still growing and improving, but as its popularity inceases so to will the issues from the players of it. if we use TF2 for example, looking at DayZ as TF original, and its future as TF2.. its pretty easy to see the mass popularity causing conflicting devopment paths by the dev, as his vision becomes muddled by the "visions" of the "pro" players of his/her mod.
on top of that, with alot of places even mmorpg.com hailing this as a fully Free to play Mod, there again can be poise for problems. as little timmy who bandwagons the "in" thing finds out how "cooooool" this mod is and runs home to play it, not bothering to research it or learn what is required winds up not buying ArmA 2 or infact jacks their parents CC and splurges buying all of ArmA2 for this mod, and finding out he hates it to death.. as this mod is unplayable without the ArmA games to support it, alot of people are having to invest 30-40 bucks for multiple "games" just for a mod they may or may not like.
the backlash from that can do harm to a developing game/mod as well as no press at all. as the press covarage of this game explodes further im rather worried about its developer either getting bogged down by "pro"'s telling him/her how to make their mod, as well as mass influx of players finding out they just out right hate the game as its too hard for them and inturn blackballing the mod .
while it may seem im against the mod, i really am not. i frankly think its an interesting take on a mod. and do wish it to succeed, though i have no plans to rush out and invest up to 60 bucks for several games i have no real interest in, just to play a alpha mod that i may not even like or may change to something i hate/love 6 months from now.
if it had a free version or could be run in a trial state or something to allow "demoing" of it, id most likely try it my self. but in its current state with the posted bugs and issues (which are in time going to fixed) im not in a hurry. im just kinda worried the dev may be distracted from his planned path of development and attempt to instead make a mod that everyone wants (aka TF2 hats...... ugh)

The only thing I can suggest video game enthusiasts do is research products before they buy them. I purchased Arma and its expansions two days ago, dropped thirty bucks on Combined Operations, specifically to play DayZ. Why? Because I had done near three hours of video watching, wiki reading, and forum browsing that lead me to the conclusion that the game was going to be hard work to play and install, which it certainly is, but was going to provide something I had been looking toward for a long, long time. Nothing about DayZ is typical to the FPS or game playing audience. The best way I can describe it, and to paraphrase some of the developers own words, is that the project was created to instill some form of emotional reaction toward your experience. I'm fairly biased, because I love this game and the concept, especially since I've been looking for a massively zombie apocaplypse game that actually captured what I perceive to be the realism of that scenario.
It is true, however, that I also worry about its publicity. My understanding is that Rocket, the lead developer I believe, had recently told fans that he didn't want beta and alpha clients leaking to a large population of players, because the game simply isn't ready. Moreover, he's having trouble controlling the most updated beta clients while attempting to patch or bug fix his way into a more playable modification (which takes time, by the way, since this is a side project for the team). All of that said, we could be seeing the future of another stand alone product that came about through modding, the likes of Counter Strike, Team Fortress, or Natural Selection.

Make you right i suppose. 1 thing i do disagree with is it does only cost £20 to buy whats needed to play dayz. i bought the ARma combination deal which includes whats needed. I think it should be made clear here somewhere on the forums that you need this as opposed to assuming thats its free. Thats will create issues im guessing.
Wow....that is...I dont even know what to say, really.
Your worried about a game that you dont even play getting press coverage that will cause its ruin, all because its a great mod?
Or something like that?
If its a good mod then the people who wrote it deserve to be in the spotlight.
And spending $40 to play it...please do some research.
http://www.arma2.com/free <--- the base game is free

ya iv been watching arma 2 youtubers like chkilroy and others who primarly do arma 2 and some dayz. its just with today's gamer population who buy first think second.. i cant help but worry the mod will be blackballed as (garbage or buggy ect) by players who never bothered to spend a few days reading up on it.
gamers today dont like to read "manuals" lolol
im in the catagory of "i dont know if ill like it to buy it" im sure i could run out and find a err free copy of the arma's need to play it but why bother, trade possible buggy mod for other bugs no thanks, plus the main game doesnt really interest me to make it worth it to buy. i dont want to buy 60 bucks worth of game(s) just for a mod, so i havent bothered going beyond the video viewing of DayZ. i do think the mod looks enjoyable to some extent and clearly it is to the player base who play it. but will it be that same level of enjoyment for me... who knows
thats a decsision only you can make. For me i watched a few youtube clips done a small bit of research and actually when i delved into ARMA itself i decided i likes the look of that as well as Dayz. This was enough for me to make a buy. I think the main thing here is people need to do there homework.
you didnt really read my OP did you??
im not against the mod at all, i worry that it will net negitivity from players who run out to get it thinking its free or its a gold release AWSOMESAUSE game. when its an Alpha mod and clearly not free (as you need arma 2 and several other exps to use the mod).
telling me to go buy arma2 is pointless, as i do not know if i will even enjoy playing DayZ. i used to love TF had some enjoyment in early TF2 now i never touch THF2 (team hat fortess 2) as its just not fun anymore the direction is long since lost.
as history has shown on some of the "community" driven games, the direction and drive gets muddled and side tracked attempting to applease the majorty (aka most forum spammy) community members, so much that the game goes from solitar 2.0 to become minesweeper.
as personally i dont really have a strong interesting i 100% realistic shooters like Arma 2 i dont really have a huge interest in buying it, and that carries over to mods. why would i spend money on a game im Iffy about playing just for a mod? yes i know Arma 2 has a lot of mods, so does minecraft. doesnt mean i got minecraft for the mods. if DayZ had a standalone client of sorts or could be run with the default Arma 2 free cient on steam or w/e id give it a try.
but to spend money on a Iffy game just because others like it... is nuts... if that was the case i would have bought WoW and D3 and SC2 and a billion other games by now...
see my point?
i quite agree with you, but with todays gamers homework for them is watching 1 game video or trailer and wanting it right now lol. im just throwing out there my own personal worries on this mod's spot light shining. as months ago it was hardly known about now its all over the place.. some people are treating it like "THE NEXT BIG THING" when its still in its infancy tomorrow the dev could put hats in to and make it a TF2 hat clone... who knows lol
I can understand this sentiment to some extent. Recently, yesterday in fact, I convinced two of my friends to purchase what they needed of Arma II in order to play DayZ. Through the use of Ventrilo, I can tell you that the installation and initial gameplay was extremely frustrating for them. The learning curve is definitely rough during your first few hours in the game, and if I hadn't been there trying to encourage them to get it right, or to even locate eachother in the 225 square kilometer map, they would have given up long before they reached a point that they were enjoying the game. It's also worth mentioning that these are people who generally enjoy these sorts of unforgiving mechanics, and if it hadn't been for some explanation or hand holding, they probably would have given up, which is exactly how I would expect mass consumption of this mod to be received. It isn't for everyone, and you need friends to survive.

ya i'v noticed that from the chkilroy vids of DayZ, he had a group of 6 drop to a group of 3 then him and 1 buddy all in within 1 ingame day. ofcourse the server he played on seemed to have alot of player jacking, as well he and his group are kinda of RPers of Arma 2 going by the vids he has up.
the game really pushes the need for mates to watch your back lol. sadly there are alot of people who are running to DayZ it seems who are going solo and hitting the "walls"
i personally am not put off by "perma death" or free roaming games, iv played mount and blade as well as haven and hearth plus others. so dying and starting over while horribly sucky can also be fun to a point lol.
hence why i enjoy watching some of the arma 2 and dayz streams :P
