The problem is that this is not the thread for the discussion you want to have.  This thread is about the OPs working theory that Blizzard has a nefarious plan to generate autheticator sales by hacking their own game.

I agree with you that security is an issue, but those legitimate concerns are just drowned out by threads like this one...

I don't think this is a Blizzard conspiracy but I do believe something is going on there. I played WoW for a few months. About 2 months after I left, someone started using the account. I have never had this happen with any other game.

I think there are a few Blizzard employees who are making money on the side selling accounts to gold farmers. It could only be one guy.  I would be surprised if they did this with an active account. My impression was that this mainly happened to idle accounts as I have heard this several times from other people.

Your computer's not more secure when Blizzard's servers are offline.

If you had a few lapses of security here and there, you're not in a position to claim such a thing would never happen to you.

As for the rest of this thread, it's full of win. I read all of it and it was delicious.

This is exactly the thread for this sort of conversation.

I don't think the OP was correct, and I think may be a bit paranoid, but perhaps there is some reason for paranoia. As LydarSynn said there is something fishy going on, and perhaps it is a few employees doing wrong. But the fact remains something messed up is going on, whether or not it has to do with authenticator sales.

As for you, strumpf, perhaps three instances of catching malware because I wasn't careful is not nearly the same thing as being hacked. And even if it were, having a dozen different passwords for various things makes malware phishing incredibly difficult. And if you knew so much about these things, you'd know this. Find me one person who hasn't caught a virus or malware at least a couple of times, and I'll show you a liar. It is impossible to have perfect security all the time in that regard. But again, having accounts hacked and stolen is entirely a different matter. And my Blizzard account is the only thing of mine that has ever been hacked. And once I installed an authenticator on my phone, I haven't had a problem since.

Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

And it isn't.. why? Because you say so? That's what's happening a lot on forums in threads like these right now ("I couldn't possibly.."). People are still getting hacked. Hmm must be Blizzard.

Different passwords are so if one is obtained not all your other accounts are screwed as well btw, they don't do anything against targetted attacks. Also malware and phishing are different things. Just fyi.

Glad to hear you haven't had a problem since though.

Ppl are using same password for every game, fun site, mails and other things, and then they wonder how come their account is compromised.
My idiotic m8 used password: password123 and he used it to register on every fun site too. Ofcourse , account got compromised, and he blamed Blizz for it, but it is clear that it was only his mistake

As completely as absurd as the OPs claim is...

It is nowhere near as absurd as hiring a multinational team of GMs to do nothing but deal with compromised accounts all day every day but not bother to implement simple industry standard server-side security features such as IP checking, case sensitive passwords, emailing to confirm passchanges/new logins, a PIN to enter on randomly placed buttons in a mouse driven interface ala AION, site verification ala every single online bank ever, asking new IPs for the name of a character on the account, asking new IPs security questions, having a phone authentication service that actually DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO, etc.  Heck these guys did not even include an authenticator in the box.

Any one of those things would be so VASTLY cheaper than dealing with the man hours cost alone, let alone the bad publicity.  The OP may sound absurd, but considering how money hungry blizz-act is, their behavior is even more absurd.

EditL  I will fish around for a link but there was a rather convincing piece that once pointed out that WoWs population never decreased during blizzards claimed mass bannings - as in those people were getting new accounts.  As long as that keeps happening, these kind of breaches are double dipping profit out of the same consumers for them.

They do this by using staff to actually hack peoples accounts and then the account ends up getting banned. If you don't unbann the account after a month then you've lost everything, gold, gear, the lot forever.

No other MMO has ever had this problem.

Dude the Vasco Digipass GO6 authenticator they practically give away for $6.50 costs $30 from most places without the cutesy custom graphics. They sell them at cost.  Blizzard does not ban D3 accounts for getting hacked.  They will restore your stuff twice for free, which costs them a lot of money. After that you're on your own.

I was referring to WoW accounts.
