Concerns about the F2P and CS...

I'm really looking forward to PS2 !

Watched the entire Livestream from E3 yesterday and it looks like even more chaotic fun than the original PS was image

F2P is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it will most likely keep the action hectic and the world full of targets.

But mixing "friendly fire" and F2P ? How many asshats will just be running around shooting their own faction "for fun" ? Will there be penalties to discourage this ? If not, I can see quite a few players earning their cert in "douchebag" before any other...

SOE go to great lengths to assure us that the CS is mostly about cosmetic character customisation. But there will also be XP-boosters and "other" things. So far, it doesn't sound like the CS will sell the obvious P2W things like "extra-damage ammo" that are so "popular" in some other F2P combat games (WoT and Batllestar Galactica come to mind).

But what if the CS also lets you buy "resources" (the stuff you need for spawning vehicles) or boosters for faster resource gain ? That would give you the ability to spawn far more air and ground vehicles. Very tempting if your faction is gaining resources "too slowly" because they don't currently control the right hexes...

I'm assuming that the rate at which you personally earn resources is tied to which resource nodes (and how many of them) your faction controls. Please correct me if I'm wrong !

Well, as far as griefing goes, the grief system in PS 1 was pretty good at preventing this stuff. You would eventually have your guns locked and movement speed cut in half. If you pushed it far enough it would auto ban you. I expect a similar system (hopefully!) in ps2.

As far as the cash shop goes, it feels like the lesser of two evils to me. A subscription absolutely won't work for this game IMO. I would gladly pay (still subbed to planetside) but so many others would never consider it.

From what I understand, the cash shop will have appearance items, boosts (xp and resources), and weapons. The weapons are supposed to be sidegrades and will be available with resources.

The boosts don't bother me much. Other games have used them with good success. They are desirable but don't actually make you overpowered in a fight. I feel like this is one of the best ways to monetize a f2p shooter.

Sure the resource boost might allow them to spawn more vehicles, but if they are any good they should be making their vehicles last longer.

Someone who is just spamming tanks a you isn't overpowered because of how many tanks they are using. It just shows how bad at tank driving they are.

A skilled player without a boost will always be better than an unskilled player with one.

Of course we don't know how it will play out once the game is live, but I honestly feel that we don't have anything to fear from this. As long as the weapon sidegrades are decently balanced the CS will be fine.

I believe they will have the same or similar grief system to PS1 which worked very well.

Cash shop will most likely be like LoL and Tribes : Ascend which is mostly cosmetic and very very minute xp boosts which is only  there to help you grind less for that next item/skin or w/e.

Tribes is not mostly cosmetic, it's borderline pay 2 win.

You can earn xp and weapons in game yes, but it takes forever, probably far longer grind than it would take gaining the 6300 ip to get  a new character in LoL.  Which has me concerned about this game and as to what kind of leveling system they have in stored.

That's true to an extent. Trying to grind for a weapon you want in tribes is a pain in the ass.

However, a lot of the starter weapons are just as competitive, depending on what role you want to play.

Account bans (even temporary) work in a sub-based game, but how effective is a player ban in a F2P game ?

Indeed, my concerns are not going to prevent me from trying the game or dampen my enthusiasm :D

The CS usually only becomes intrusive if the game is not generating "enough" income. Let's hope that PS2 attracts a lot of players and that SOE aren't TOO ambitious in their expected earnings.
