Seems like they have bigger plans with DayZ if this is all true and not only rumors....copy/paste from DZ forum:
Sum up:
Please bare in mind that all listed things are unconfirmed/rumors/speculations!
- Dean Hall was taken off arma 3 team to focus on dayZ exclusively
- more units sold of arma in the past 60 days than they have sold in the entire life time of arma
- they currently want to keep it alpha
- they want to make it easier to install (get the mod into a client version)
- servers: there may be the idea as a long term goal to build a tranqulity servers (similar to EVE online servers)
- they internally talk about one single large world/server everyone is on (MMO)
- they want to take some of the arma 3 tech (that wont be ready for the release of arma 3) and might be using it to build downloadable clients
- mod to work pretty well with the arma 3 internal build
- they are considering using the arma 3 engine to release a stand alone version of the mod (which may take place in WW2/1944 invasion)
- they think about charging for stand alone version but for a much lower price point (less than for the arma 2 and OA)
- making the map even larger than it is
- every building enterable

Actually, I doubt this since you can find such infos..
Operation Flashpoint*, Bohemia Interactive's debut game published by Codemasters in 2001, became the No. 1 bestselling PC game around the world and has won many international awards, including “Game of The Year” and “Best Action Game.” Over 2 million copies of Operation Flashpoint have been sold since its release. Bohemia Interactive’s second major release, ArmA: Armed Assault, followed in 2007 and sold over 400,000 copies on PC through various local publishing partners.Arma 2, the latest hit in the series of realistic military simulators, released worldwide during summer 2009 was placed in the top positions of official PC charts around the world immediately on release; it also won "Most PC" Game in the 2009 PC Gamer Awards.
most stuff they said is nonsense afaik... what's true:
- DayZ will be ported to Arma3, and may be available as standalone
- DayZ will probably use the same base map as Arma again. Arma3 indeed has a bigger map with more enterable buildings.
@MMO: DayZ can't really become "massively" multiplayer, and it doesn't have to, either. The setting has to feel kinda lonely, so 100-200 players is the most you can fit on Arma3's map without making it feel crowded.
Hype train -> Reality
Yep, if you had any more than 200 players it wouldnt feel like a survival game, it would end up just being a big giant gank fest, and a total mess. People are buying this game now because of how harsh it is with its steep death penalty, learning curve and end of the world feeling. If that was to be changed so drastically I doubt as many people would buy it stand alone.
Having said that the guy that made the mod doesn't want to make it easier, global chat has already been removed now and he seems to be in charge now of taking it in the correct direction.
Agreed. 100%

I would have to disagree. As long as they made the map huge (which never seems to be a problem in Arma games), increased the number of spawn points and spread them out significantly, then DayZ could retain the same feel despite having a massive server. They just need to be able to increase map size/spawn points proportionally to the number of players the server will hold. That means the map really would have to be massive. It also could cause problems with people being able to meet up with friends. Sounds like it would still be pretty fun but would take some A+ development work.

I will play no more MMORPGs until somethign good comes out!
That's true, and if DayZ did become a single server game, I think the map would have to be much bigger anyway to avoid over-familiarity and help hold interest. Bohemia are pretty good at map/landscape engines so I could see them pulling it off, and huge (really huge) maps have been possible for a long time. WW2OL is a case in point.
Having said this, I'm not convinced that DayZ will go down the single server route although it would be very cool if it was done right.
