Liked Pre CU SWG? Try Saga of Ryzom!

I, like many others here, liked SWG pre CU and I was a bit sad to leave SWG even though I didn't feel I could continue after the CU.

But I think I've found a replacement. I've playing the 14 day trial of The Saga of Ryzom and it's amazing. It really has that Pre CU, SWG feel to it too! No "Levels", just a skill based system.

The game is a strange mix if Fantasy and Sci-Fi, kind of like Star Wars is. The grouping really "feels" like SWG pre CU. It's nice.

Also you have something called "Stances" which allow you to literally create your own abilities. Want an attack that bleeds, does extra dmg and improved accuracy? Fine you can make it if you have the right stances and are willing to balance the ability with a pool cost.

Give it a try...I think you'll really like it.::::28::

Oh thank you. I love SoR. I would be playing it now cept the server connection from here to america stinks.

Yah you can stances for anything. Not just combat. Crafting, prospecting, and mining also. Its quite good. Plus they are starting the Ryzom Ring which will give players their own little area to set up their own content and then open it up to whoever they want.

But Nevrax did this really moron thing in an MMO. They fixed the majority of big bugs before actually adding heavy content. So its definately a breath of fresh air.

Maybe they should turn SWG over to Nevrax. heh

Any other things u might be able to tell me that would want to make me try this even more?

The new Ring feature looks very cool.

I tried the 14 day trial myself and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I set my mmo limit to two concurrent games, so SoR is going to have to wait.

For those looking to check out the trial, be prepared to have a credit card. Unfortunately it's required.

I tried a two week trial, and the community was awesome, but I was lost as all get out. I had no idea how to fight, craft, harvest nothing. It was really fustrating to me trying to figure everything out that I eventually just gave up.

This was some time ago, maybe I should give it another shot.

On your recommendation - I downloaded and began my 14-day trial last night.  Now, keep in mind I am very very new to SWG, and still think it's a great game.  I am blown away by the detail.

But, onto SoR...  My initial impression of this game (and by that, I mean about 2.5 hours of playtime) is very positive.  The community (which seems to be unbelievably small, at least on the starter island) is very helpful and generally friendly.  This is good.  Some of the concepts introduced, most notably the skill/class system - reminds me of SWG alot.  The graphics are vibrant and fun - reminds me of WoW, only slightly better.  The swords and armor and character models have a Warhammer Fantasy feel to them.  Really nice artwork on the weapons and armor... REALLY nice!  The spell effects are fantastic.  The crafting seems to fall somewhere between WoW (ridiculously elementary) and SWG (incredibly detailed) - which I think is good.  The ability to create your own skills/spells is a great concept that I must admit I barely understand at this point.  However, I do understand it in theory, and I love the customization concepts of it!

I am hoping to play some more tonight and dig in a bit deeper.  Anyone who thinks about trying it out, know that the key bindings are completely re-workable, which you will probably want to do straight away.  Also know that the interface (HUD) seems very cramped and obtrusive off the bat.  You can get rid of lots of screens once you get the basics of the game down.  The "tutorial" is text based, where you read how to do stuff.  There is a "walkthrough" of sorts when you start, but it is kind of... I don't know how to describe it, you'll see.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation, I would never have tried the game without it.

As I understand it you should get off newbie island as quickly as possible, because the community is just outside waiting to help you.

Seems like a good bunch of people, though that conclusion is taken from what is said on the websites. Even the game's main website is very mature, and helpful.

I doubt you will find Crazykillah Crazy there.

One late evening I am online. Around 1AM CST. And I am hunting Gingos in Fyros mainland. There are about 10 more players around hunting, prospecting, and so on. One guy is from Matis. We are chatting and doing our thing when he says his friend just logged and he wants to go back to matis to get something. He then asks if anyone wants to join him.

In a matter of 30 minutes he now has a caravan of about 60 people from all over ready to go. And we start our journey. This isnt just a quick jaunt. This is going to take awhile. But we do it. Then we keep on going. Well into the next day we have done a complete loop around the map two times.

    Man that was fun.

I keep thinking about trying SOR but I will only pay 1 full monthly fee for a game and right now that's going to CCP. EVE is my game right now and I'm not paying another $14.95 fee. Even with SWG I was that way, the only difference was that I paid $21.95 so I could play EQ2 and PlanetSide for "free" along with SWG. But I wouldn't have paid $14.95 for EQ2 or PlanetSide either.

So SOR will have to wait. I am really enjoying the atmosphere in EVE right now. It's a bit slower than I'm used to but a very solid game.

SoR is still advertising a free trial. It's worth checking out, if only for the trial period.
I don't play, but if either Eve or WoW gets too boring than SoR is getting a new player. ^_^

True... worth looking into at least. Though I DETEST "FREE" Trials that require a CC... all they're doing is farming CC information to sell to mailing lists.

Please tell me the expansions for SOR are free because otherwise we can't budget it.

I liked Eve also except I had to keep cycling my camera around and I hate point to point flying. Make it twitch and direct control then give me a good HUD and I would be there in a heartbeat.

No expansions that I have seen. Nevrax did this really moron thing in an MMO. They fixed the majority of game killing bugs first before they started working on new content. Almost put them into bankruptcy too. Which should be able to tell you just how messed up MMO players are.

Ryzom Ring will be out later. It gives you a small plot of land and lets you create your own content. Neat idea there.

And there is some other things on the horizon later. But I dont think they will charge right now.

First of all, it's not fair to either SWG or Ryzom to compare it to pre-CU SWG. Ryzom does have levels, and these levels make just as much a difference to combat as SWG (if you divide by 10). Also, SWG forces you to specialize, while Ryzom encourages specialization through the sheer volume of time it would take to maximize every level in every tree. Ryzom only has a few things to craft (weapons, jewelry, and three types of armor), while SWG allows you to craft droids, houses, vehicles, etc. And exploration in Ryzom is so tough, all those whiny CL 1 crafters on Dantooine would explode on contact.

However, both games are brilliantly different from the Everquest-style MMORPGs, and I would recommend either in a heartbeat. They don't so much overlap each other as they simply cater to players more interested in exploration and crafting than all out combat. Ryzom needs a lot more content though (stuff like Outposts and Rites would be a great start).

Kaibigan34: Nevrax IS bankrupt - I believe they are still filed under the French version of bankrupcy for the next four months or so. The reason they did the Spring Clean (fixed bugs) was because the codebase was messy and they couldn't add new features easily. They've reorganized, hired a high profile new leader, and are completely back on track. However, I don't know that it is accurate to suggest that they fixed bugs before adding content by choice, or that it is a particularly praiseworthy endeavour for a game which desperately needs something new for the past year.

Nevrax arnt bankrupt, far from it and nevrax have stated it. Yes they are still under chapter 11 but its nothing like chapter 11 in the states. They just took out the protection while doing internal reorganisation and getting back on track etc.

Doesnt matter if its by choice or not. It is highly praiseworthy. Or do you like when game companies drop content on top of bugs to create even worse bugs like SOE does with SWG and countless other game companies do with their games?

That some of us actually question if its worth praise or not, I think, shows just how messed a gamer's priorities are. And one reason SWG was released in the condition it was in and still is in today. Because game companies know we wont do a single thing about it. Every year our expectations is lowered by game releases.

5 years ago a game like SWG would have been laughed out of the community. But as we prove time and again we are fools for allowing it to continue. Mourning was released in the worst shape ever for an MMO. And I am willing to bet in another 3 years that will be commonplace and we wont do anything about it.

Games seem to be the only genre or product we allow this behavior. Would you buy a big mac without the bun? How about a new car without tires? Maybe go see a movie that hadnt gone through editing? Perhaps get a 3 week tour package in Nassau where you dont get a hotel room til the final week? No you wouldnt do any of that. And if anyone tried to do that to us they would still be serving time in prison. But we allow game companies to do that very thing to us.

Now the arguements. "Well a game is alot of work and hard to code. Lets see you try." Hmmm well I am willing to bet a car isnt exactly playing with Legos either. And the design of a building is quite complicated. Yet what would happen if either was created less then the standard? People would be going to a place so exclusive you need a judge's recommendation to get in. "Technology is advancing too fast." Again same with other areas of production. We wouldnt allow a manufacturer in clothing to do that or use that excuse. Yet we allow game companies too. Why?

Because we are greedy spoiled unorganized selfish brats. That is why. We want it NOW NOW NOW NOW then complain for years about the condition and act surprised that its not working. Game companies know this and rely on this behavior to get away with things, that in other production area, would get them jail time.

    Well I just joined Ryzom.

Where are the tons of bugs? Where are the Jedi showing off at the Starport? Where are the critters keeping me from my harvesters? Where is the armor that cost me millions yesterday, that I can't wear today? Where are the public bashings and bannings from the community manglers? Where are the griefers? Where is the experience nerf? Where are the tons of expansions that have nothing to do with the time line? Where is the publisher interfering with the design? Where...is Raph Koster?!?!?

It's just a guess, but people are peacefully calm and satisfied with their game play over there for a reason.

I have yet to see one complaint out of anger. NOT ONE in two separate forums devoted to the game.

Its Sci Fi and Fantasy mixed. Might want to check what your commenting about next time bro. There is even an alien invasion. Rocket launchers, pistols, the Kami and so on. Its more then Sci Fi or Fantasy.

But glad you wont try it out. Better you stay with your buggy game. The community in SoR is too mature for you. They actually try to help better the game and not pretend its perfect.

I think that's a little out of line.  I've been around these forums a while and I've never seen Erillion say that SWG was perfect.  Also, baselessly saying that the SoR community is too mature for someone is quite--immature.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

That is your proof? Because a site had to pick between sci fi or fantasy you automatically assume its one or the other? So I guess I am the moron and only imagined the rifles, pistols, alien invasion, etc in SoR right? Oh no wait I actually played the bloody game and know. You didnt. So you know squat.

You wouldnt enjoy SoR anyway. It actually has few bugs for you to lie about or justify and SoR has something called content. I doubt you could handle it. Your head would probably explode.

Have fun paying to play in a buggy commercial

Kai, where do you get off saying that something with space ships (ones floating around such as starter towns), aliens, guns and advanced technology is sci-fi? There is no such thing as a cross genre game. /sarcasm

Don't let someone upset you by posting something to illicit an angry response. As you can see now petty name calling is starting to rear its head. Lets stop before it becomes personal. When looking at Trolls (a certain forum member beleives the definition of troll is to destroy a game LOL) this is a good sign that you have broken through their skin. To them, ignorance is bliss. You don't need substantial proof as they are always right in their own mind. Their job is to make an arse out of you. Sometimes I almost reply to something but opt not to after I realise whats going on.

Regardless, Im still enjoying this game alot. Only bug I have is that now and then, the creature I attack will charge at me arse first lol! SoR is really a fantastic game that can entertain both sci-fi and fantasy players. Its nice to play in areas that are unique, lush and vibrant. The community is extremely helpful. The thing that confuses me is that I have read numerous times that the AI for the creatures is very advanced. I havent really noticed anything special. I dont think its interesting that they "notice" you and follow you. Im not high level yet, so maybe Ill see later on. Would be cool to gain attention of a whole wack of creatures and lead em over to a particular mob that doesnt like them though.

Yah your right. I shouldnt get upset as it might actually get Erillon to play SoR and then the game would go down hill.

The creature AI is more advanced. Mobs actually hunt each other and such. I remember sitting outside on a hill and watching a pack of gingos come over to a herd of capryni and bring one down. Almost hyena like. Rather awesome. That was until the pack turned around and saw the little fyrosian sitting there and decided they wanted desert.
