Best game for crafting

ZavaelZavael Member UncommonPosts: 21

Hi, i am a big fan of crafting in MMORPGs, i was just wondering which game everyone thinks has the best crafting system, or anyone knows of any games being released fairly soon that have an in depth crafting system. The best crafting system i have seen so far has definately been in SWG. The resource gathering was done very well, the use of blueprints and factories made it unomotonous, and it felt like you were running a real business.

I have just started EVE online, which looks like it has a complex player based economy, so could be good. What games are other crafting fans either playing or looking forward too? I have just began reading about dark and light, could be promising? I found the systems in WoW and EQ2 to both be poor in comparison to other games.

Is the answer a return to SWG? Any posts welcome :)

Also, does anyone know of any forums or websites dedicated to crafting in MMORPG?

I have read about that game a bit. Does look quite interesting, although i am keen to play one of the "big" games.

Frankly atm there is only one big game, namely WoW. Tbh I found the crafting options much better and easier to get going in WoW than EQ2. Still prefer UO though

Yeah WoW is better than EQ2 for crafting, but still not great for a dedicated crafter who wants to run a business.

    Horizons.
Not only do you harvest a variety of resources and craft items from those resources, you can also add "techniques" to your creation -- techniques being things as simple as a plus to an ability or modifier or as complex as a different coloring to the metal (to make your creation stand out in appearance) and other things combined together. Their system for creating items is easy to use, which makes its depth that much more impressive. Further, multiple players can cooperate on larger projects -- like building actual HOUSES in the gameworld, or BRIDGES, or other works like that... and yes, they are individual and realised in the gameworld (not stupid instances).

    AC1.
Since they added "scavenging", and then applying some scavenged materials to individual items of all sorts, they are definitely back in the crafting top ten.

    A Tale in the Desert.
The whole game is about crafting.

Games to avoid if you like depth or a point to your crafting:

WoW: the usual "find x chunks of ore, make chunks bars, stand by forge, click create". Absolutely pointless in the game, because you will ALWAYS be able to find better items available in the Auction House than you'll be able to build for yourself and cheaply. Can't build anything that is actually realised in the world, like housing, bridges, etc. BORING.

EQ2: fantastic depth (actually freakin' HUGE depth, VAST array of formulas, recipes, etc) betrayed by an overcomplicated system that turns crafting into a chore instead of a pleasure. Some like it, most don't seem to. While there seems to be a lot of options to it, everything comes out the same. So if you build a copper sword with a +1, it will look exactly like every other such sword. Definitely lacks the customizations of games that are MUCH older, but then, so does WoW.

Maybe you should give Horizons a try...as crafting goes...it's second to none.

And I believe they have a free trial of some type.

The Saga of Ryzom's Harvest and crafting system should interest you.  Mobs dont drop weapons or armour etc, they drop materials.  Materials are also harvested from the ground.

All good items in the game are player made so theres essentially no NPC armour/weapons to be found on anyone.

The system itself has a lot of variety, you can craft different things with different looks with different materials.  The different materials produce different stats and theres such a variety of results everyone is always looking for that unique plan that will make their goods the best.

So theres plenty of room to experiement there.

If you like crafting you should give the 2 week free trial a go at www.ryzom.com

Thanks for the replies guys, i had never considered Horizons or Ryzom so i will have a read about them. Do many people play these games? I heard they were both dieing. Any other information?

About EQ2 - what you said has actually interested me, i only played for a few weeks so i didn't really delve into the crafting. Are the player made items saleable or are they just not as good as drops (like WoW)? Seems it may be worth looking into.

On the contrary Ryzom is improving daily.  Theres a stream of good news from nevrax and solid dates on content.  They completed their "spring clean" which was a mopping up of bugs for months before getting right back onto the content, which is something very rare for a mmo these days.  So now its full steam ahead on content.

As a result players are flooding in atm, I know at least the Matis refugee island is busier than I remember seeing it ever currently.

Horizons is the hands down the best crafting game right now but beware the adventuring is beyond awful.  Many people seem to like SWG for crafting and say that SWG has improved greatly since release.  I could never go back to SWG IMO it was the worst (I know AO's release was painfull and bad as were many others but looking at the size of the company compared to the finished product it was the worst IMHO) and most dissapointing MMORPG to have been released.  It could have been what WoW was for popularity and expanding the MMORPG market if SOE had decided to focus on gameplay rather than on how much money they could make.   If they had not Allowed thier  marketing department to design maybe they could have released a playable fun game rather than just an online chat room.  Sorry, I will now turn my SWG/SOE rant off now.  Below is the Horizons link.

The best crafting game in development IMO is Vanguard.  It really looks good for crafting.  Hopefully the game will come close to expectations. Below is a link to Vanguard crafters which should fillyou in.

    http://www.vanguardcrafters.com/

Unfortunately Vanguard just started beta (if you can call it beta as its just the devs and family most likey real beta will start in December or next spring) so the earliest you might see release is next summer with xmas 2006 or spring 2007 a more likely option.  Although, I am sure you will get a much more optomistic timeline from most fanboys.

  • ZavaelZavael Member UncommonPosts: 21

More good horizons reviews! I do mainly just want to craft, so the adverturing being so bad would not be a huge problem, but why do you think it is awful?

Vanguard looks like an interesting one for the future, thanks for the link.

Curious: what part of the adventuring was "beyond awful"? I'll admit to being relatively new to Horizons (I find the crafting second to none), and so far I haven't been so turned off by the questing and creatures/combat that I would call it "beyond awful". It's actually been rather interesting. But again, I'm a comparitively new player on it... just curious what you were referring to, if you could explain.

    Thanks!

EQ2 items are able to be sold to the community, via your own "apartment" or via the many brokers in the world (all items are available through brokers, once anyone puts them up for sale). People can buy at the brokers, or find your apartment-instance or house-instance (there are NO actual houses in the world that are uniquely yours, just the same door everyone else uses and it's instanced to you). It's strange, like I said before, because the enormous depth of the system is undeniable - but there's little differentiation at least in terms of how the items look in the world. This is where the armor dye of AC1, for instance, and the vast array of things you can do to items in Horizons, all games older than EQ2 or WoW, are vastly superior to either.

The system is extraordinarily detailed. To make a wood box, you might have to first create the chemicals needed to treat the wood, then treat the wood, then make the individual slats of metal you use to reinforce the box from raw ore, then make the metal lock (for instance), again from raw ore turned into ore bars, and then, once you've literally been through about thirty creations, can you take the end results of those efforts and build the box. It's probably the most accurate, in terms of replicating the entire creation process in the utmost painstaking detail, but at the same time, it means an ENORMOUS investment in time to build even the simplest thing. You basically have to love crafting for crafting's sake.
And the lack of differentiation, of customization, is shocking, considering how much detail is in the system -- very odd. They need to put in the simple things that games like AC1 has had for many many years like armor and weapon dye, etc.

That's not to say that the final objects don't look good. It's just that every single "box" made will look like every other box. The recipes/formulas are absolutes. What's needed is the ability to mix/match to create unique (or at least passably different) items. Which is why I find Horizons so fantastic, in terms of crafting.

If you want the most in depth crafting I'd say A Tale in the Desert or wait for Roma Victor to be released for the most awesome crafting systems ever found in an mmo game, check the skills tree link and be prepared to be amazed!

Saga of Ryzom is the best game for crafting by far , Horizons is next.

Also SoR is far from dying, on the opposite , its growing fast.

SWG is the ultimate crafting game.. Crafters have thier own proffesion with 2nd proffesions: Arcitect, Armercrafter, weaponcrafter and droid crafter... the competion is rough and you can make your products stand out from others... But it takes time to be a crafter since you have to keep your harvesters going and you have to make profit for keeping the harvesters maintenance... SWG also have the best housing and playercity system ever made...

Nothing compares to Ryzom Harvesting / Crafting system, the best you can get in any mmorpgs imho

Both SWG and Horizons have a superb craft system, when those aren't your style you can always try Ryzom, which has a very cool crafting system too!

SWG has to take the cake on crafting.  Their systems and methods are so complex and the econ is very vast and can be compared to real life.

Come back to SWG. Crafters are in demand here. You already know SWG crafting system is great so why go somewhere else. Other than this game you could wait for roma victor. Although i still dont think it will be nearly like running a huge business like SWG.

Oh please Garrison... he said he enjoys detailed crafting. Crafting in WOW is a joke.

The MMORPG's that have the best crafting systems are, in my opinion:

Star Wars Galaxies - Easy to learn and get into. Gets you into the more complex stuff gradually.
Ultima Online - Grandfather of all games that have crafting. Once the best hands down, still top 2.
Horizons - Again, easy to learn and very deep.
EVE Online (though it's complex as hell)
EQ2 - Very detailed crafting system. sort of a cross between Horizons and SWG but a lot more complex to learn because of how they implemented it. I'd rate it the worst of the 5.

Of those listed I would rate EVE and SWG as the two best MMORPG's overall (of that batch) with EQ2 a close 3rd. Then UO then Horizons.

I noticed the posts about Ryzom... I only played that one a little but yeah I could see that ranked in the top 6 crafting wise. I think the 5 I listed are all superior to it, however.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
    Sig image Pending
    Still in: A couple Betas
