Downed State

IrusIrus Member Posts: 774

I just wanted to make a thread devoted to the downed state because I a) had a very good experience with it this BWE; b) see a lot of people denouncing it and saying it's useless. (this is PvE)

I originally wasn't really into it, but once I got a closer look at it and got involved in some more serious fights, I found the mode makes you borderline "OP" at times. It extends your fighting power quite a lot.

For one, learn your downed skills. My ranger had a skill that revived my pet and another skill that asked my pet to revive me. If you are fighting a mob that is too high on hp for you to kill him and rally, you want to concentrate on getting your health back. For some classes (Engineer is fucked), this may be more problematic because Bandage is what you get and it is interrupted by damage, but you can still get a lot of hp back by continually re-Bandaging while doing something to prevent the enemy from attacking you. As a hunter, though, I can command the pet to revive me while bandaging myself, which means I can rally multiple times during a fight quite effectively.

As such, I actually found myself juggling the downed state to reset some cooldowns, getting downed to quickly revive my pet, etc. Over time I didn't really get defeated very often and could take on large numbers of mobs, group mobs, veteran mobs, and quite easily put them down just by making sure that I enter the downed state at the right time and the right conditions. (this is not recommended in normal situations since I believe the downed state ruins your gear)

Seriously, you are nowhere near dead when you're downed. Just make sure to roll in the right direction once you're out and apply your heals.

I noticed that the Thief's downed state needs to be toned down a bit. Played mainly spvp during this weekend and found myself playing hide and seek for long periods of time with whomever killed me. The problem is the thief has this  short cooldown, short cast time ability that teleports you to some random spot and puts you in stealth. The ability itself is not bad, but they need to increase the cooldown and the cast time. It was to easy for me to wait for them to try and "finish me" and cast that thing. It could literally take people 1 to 2 minutes just to kill me while downed, a few actually gave up and left me there. At one point I stopped using it cause it was obviously flawed and made the experience pretty crappy.

I disagree with the highlight statement if you are using your turrets correct and havet he correct turrets you shouldn't even see the downed state, seriously between the thumper turret net turret and healing turrret I was a force to be reckoned with

There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own?

Haha, fair enough, I forgot that the engineer is likely to have turrets. I was basing this on the downed skills - they're all damage. Yeah, I'm not saying this to imply I have good knowledge of all classes, just that I may be biased because my ranger may have superior downed state skills and I wanted to make sure I don't just speak from my belltower.

Having played "Borderlands" in the past I liked the downed state a LOT. It offers so many possibilities and tactical options. What I don't like (and the devs mentioned in the latest AMA) is that downed skills aren't very balanced across professions. I'm talking of course about Skill3 as the others are mostly the same in functionality. For example the Elementalist Skill3 is way overpowered compared to the other Skill3 I've seen. Overall it's an excellent design idea and I like it.

Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums

Is just one of the most  annoying and useless things that i have ever saw in a MMO, in pvp u actually need to kill someone 2 times and in the WvW not allways works, even worse, in the downed state you´ll gonna die anyway and you wont kill anyone, so whats the point?. is one of those thing who gonna be annoying over time, you like it now, you´ll hate it after a few days playing the game.

well as for that I felt the elementalist had a bit of an advantage I could root them in place with my '2' and turn into mist and sometimes get them to rest with my '3'  and then revive at my leisure

I can't really comment on sPvP because I didn't play it. I don't know what to say about the double-kill system, really. As I've stated at the beginning, my comments are about the PvE.

Just wanted to reply to this. I have played GW2 and I feel certain downed states need a longer CD. forexample the thief hidden one was just annoying. The thieves often would get off 3 of these typically before I could kill them/finish them. The fighter one was also very frustrating at times. Ranger one is the strongest of course ,but usually since pet is usually walking around dead with you in pvp you need to cast both before getting rezzed by pet. Useful in PVE not so useful in PVP. I also noticed a lot of people being invulnerable status when attacking them in downed state. Bug? I dunno because maybe skill/trait out there that does that. For the most part I like the mechanic, but could use work.

Engineer's 3 is a nice chunk of damage, and helps Rallying a lot.

Necro's 2 and 3 are pretty useless, but 1 deals "a lot" of damage. I plan to trait the +50% Damage when Downed next time to check how it works.

And, yeah, the Thief's blink is probably the one thing I disliked so far during PvP. It is on such a short cooldown it's not funny. I can see one blink after downed if people are chasing you, but avoiding 2-3 players for an extended period of time is simply broken.

Thief blink cooldown is a known bug. Hopefully will be fixed soon.

Downed states vary hardcore from profession to proferssion, or maybe it's just taht I don't get how to make good use of some. Mesmer's Phantasmal Rogue is decent damage if you need help finishing something off, but unlikely to save you unless the target is near death. The directed teleport is OK but generally just delays the inevitable while solo. In group situations it sines as it gives others room to get the mobs off you.

I am glad they are fixing the blink, because I wanted to smash puppies with a sledgehammer every time I downed a Thief in PvP.

Yep, the Downed skills do vary a lot, and some are much better than others. As I said before, the Necro's 1 is channeled (no button mashing) and deals a lot of damage. I only died if I had more than 2 enemies hitting me. I routinely killed mobs 1 or 2 levels higher with about 75% of their HPs using 2 than 1. It's a little too efficient, so I reported it.

In the other hand, the Mesmer's 1 deals very, very little damage, and you have to keep pushing 1 like crazy. The Rogue Phantom must be factored in, but even then, the difference between the 2 classes was very strinking.

But the Mesmer Teleport actually saved me much more than the Necro's 2 second Fear, which amounts to nothing at all. It's useful, maybe, during PvP, when you need to break the Flagstom animation if they didn't immediately attack you after downed.

This. Absolutely ridiculous in SPVP, trying to "F" a downed rogue is like playing whack-a-mole, but not as fun. I ended up giving up and dpsing the rogue down as he hopped all over the place as I could never pull off the "finish him" animation.

In other news as a Mesmer I wonder why I have downed skills at all... the rogue isn't bad but everything else is just pretty useless.
