New person - 14-day trial - Very good first impressions!

RylaanRylaan Member Posts: 18

Hello all:

My background is simple.  I am a casual gamer, have played WoW, EQ2, EVE, CoH, and am currently playing and enjoying SWG.  I have liked all of them for different reasons.  I have been turned off to all of them in one way or another for different reasons also.  But generally, I think all are great games.

Discovered Ryzom last night due to a recommendation on the SWG boards here at MMORPG.COM.

I am so glad I downloaded the trial of Ryzom, as my initial impressions are very positive.  The community (albeit small as heck on the starter islands) is friendly and helpful.  I have only put about 2.5 hours into the game, and am still confused to some degree.  My initial thoughts on what I lke about the game are the graphics, the interface, the crafting, the skill/class concept, the "create-your-own skill" idea, and the mixture of complexity and ease-of-use of the system as a whole.

The graphics remind me of WoW with a bit of Warhammer Fantasy style thrown in.  The swords and armor especially remind me of art directly out of the Warhammer universe, which btw, is a VERY positive thing to say.  The spell effects seems extremely cool (what little I've seen).  The crafting seems to be a great mix of the simplicity of WoW and the complexities of SWG.  I would say it falls somewhere inbetween the two, which is GREAT.  The interface is somewhat customizable, which is always a bonus (would love to make that radar bigger though. hehe).  The way the "classes" and skills are done remind me ALOT of SWG, which I personally think is the best way to go with these types of games.  I don't really understand how to use stanzas to create my own skills yet, as I have barely scratched the surface of the game, but in concept - I LOVE the idea!

I have a pretty good system with a very good graphics card, and I am running the game (on the island at least) at almost full graphic capability, and it is beautiful!  I look foward to asking more questions and getting some more things explained to me as I go.

Any links to helpful websites would be most appreciated, as I will probably be browsing them today off and on.

A warm welcome to our community, Rylaan! Never did play Warhammer so I don't know what look you are talking about - it's got me curious as to what race you have picked though ::::35:: Anyways, there are a lot of sites, but the two most comprehensive ones are:

    http://ballisticmystix.com/index.jsp

    http://ryzom.raum.com

They're very very spoiler-ish though and might therefore ruin your exploring. Don't forget to check the beginner's guides section on the official ryzom forums. Lastly, don't hesitate to ask fellow players your questions... well, especially on the mainland!

    See you ingame!

    I am guessing Fyros?

Nope.  Actually I am currently playing the ashen-faced half human half elven looking people.  Here is an example (not a good one, but one nonetheless) of the art style I am talking about.  Like I said, the styles are extremely similar, and it happens to be an art style I REALLY like.

All I have to say is Yowser.

I loved this game. I think I am gonna buy it. Personally I am sorry I passed it up to go into EVE.
    Very good noob impression.

    Matis - that's it!

I actually have done lots of research on the civilizations since making the character, and must admit their background and beliefs don't gel with me quite as much as the Fyros, but after some brief snooping around, I like the look of the Matis the best.  The Fyros armor looks too sci-fi for me.  Not that it isn't cool - cause it is, but I just love the Matis look.

Just in case though, I did make a Fyros and Trykker character - cause you never know.

So last night I had a chance to play a bit more while watching the Dementiava/Davenport match.  The community is amazing - that's really all I can say.  I haven't even come close to reaching the mainland yet (I play very slow) - and the guides and gm's and even regular players are just fantastic.  Especially the guides.

I need to seriously think about whether or not I even need to play any other pc game for awhile.  I really think I could get into RYZOM big time.  My trial for EVE is just about over, my WoW experience has about run it's course due mostly to the 12 year old maturity level dominance (even on rp servers), and SWG is so detailed it borderline feels like work sometimes.  (I am not knocking SWG - as I think it downright rocks if you have gobs of time to put into it - which I'm not sure if I can do with football season on the horizon, and baseball season nearing the playoffs).

RYZOM may be exactly what I'm looking for.  More complexity than WoW, less than EVE and SWG, a nice crafting system, a wonderful skill-based experience system, a (so far) fantastic community, a very nice story line, and a darn good graphics engine to keep the shallow side of me happy.

Two questions now... 1 short and 1 potentially long.

    (1) Is their player housing like SWG?  If not, is their any type of housing at all?

    (2) Can someone explain Guilds, their importance, basically the way they work, and if you think they are implemented well into the rest of the game.

    Thanks again for reading.

Um... okies, will try to answer your quesitons...

    1. There is housing in the form of player apartments and guildhalls. Unfortunately they are static... you can't change anything at all. A player is also only able to access his/her own apartment and you can't invite anyone in. In essence this makes it nothing more than storage for when your packers are full. Guildhalls on the other hand, while also static, allow access to everyone in the guild so you can hold guildmeetings in there. Another feature of a guildhall is that it is shared storage for the guild. Every member can see what's in the inventory, but ony the leader and high officers can take things out (but everyone can put things in)... which can be a pain but it makes a nice link to your second question!

    2. Life on Atys can seem very quiet to a guildless young homin watching the regional chat. Actually, most of the chit chat and gossip happens on guild channels, so joining a guild can open a whole new experience. Initially a guild asks very little from its new recruits. Guild policies vary - for example, there are role playing guilds that require new members to complete tasks, other guilds just want to be the biggest and try to invite everyone availabe as quickly as possible, others are into power leveling, others are more selective and will only invite once they've gotten to know you a little better. Whatever the type of guild though, once they've welcomed you into the fold, they are likely to equip you. Generally, active guilds will organise trips so that their younger members can gain teleport points on other continents, answer any questions, or even work on their lower lvl skills so you have someone to team with... but this can vary - I might have just been very very lucky.

Another aspect of being in a guild is fame - their alliances with the higher powers, civilisations and tribes. Some guilds are Kami aligned, some are Karavan (so you have to choose your "religion" first or else the guild will determine it for you)... well, to make a long story short, by doing missions for factions you either gain or lose personal fame, and if you are in a guild this will affect the guild's fame as well. Fame will be important in the coming PVP outposts.

Well, eventually as your lvls increase, it will be your turn to guide and help the new recruits. Sooo... I think that Ryzom wouldn't have such a community feeling without guilds. This is probably a woefully incomplete explanation but it'll have to do! The only meaningful advice I can give you is to decide for yourself what guild you want to be in and go on from that. You don't need to join the first guild that invites you... get to know them by asking questions (this also helps them get to know you - use regional chat for this even - how do I harvest is my all time favourite ::::35::) or teaming with them. There is a list on the official forums of all the guilds and their alignments (Kami, Karavan, Neutral) and some websites so you might want to check that out too! Welcome to Atys Rylaan! ... hmm, should I greet you on the newcomer board too?

Pasque : Thanks a ton!  You did a very good job of explaining things actually.  I appreciate it.

After posting on multiple boards, and reading as much background as I could, I have FINALLY come to a decision, and I will roll up the character I will stick with throughout the game this evening.

I am going with a Male Tryker , and I am going to go against the grain a bit and follow the Kamis.

Once I get off the island (which at my rate of play will probably be about 3 years from now - I will look into finding a smallish guild of nice people.)

    Thanks again!

You're most welcome Rylaan! Best wishes for your life as a kami aligned tryker... it might be a little difficult at first as there are little kami teleports (and accompanying mission givers) near the tryker towns. When you move on to the mainland you will arrive in the capital city of Fairhaven. You will be able to find your first kami teleport not too far outside - just head up the slope of the beach. There's always the option of moving to another more kami dominated continent as well - I recommend the desert, though I could be prejudiced as I'm fyros! If you need any help ingame feel free to send Djamiel a tell (/tell insert name insert message) - I'm trying to restrain myself from making a shameless recruitment plug but I really hope to bump into you so I can do it ingame! ::::02::
